“I’ll be back soon. I want to use the restroom.” Anna said to Carter and quickly hurried off to the bathroom.
She was frustrated enough to head off to the bathroom. The moment she stood before the mirror, she stared at her reflection in the mirror. She looked dejected and distraught.
The evening wasn't going as planned. All her big clients whom she was in partnership with had called her just this evening, a few minutes in succession, to pause their contract.
What she didn't know was that they all partnered with her due to Chris's influence. The news of their divorce was spreading and the companies had to pause their partnership with her. They weren't sure where they stood in the recent news of their failed marriage.
Tears escaped her eyes and she sobbed for a few minutes. When she looked up, her face was soaked from the tears. She’d never imagined everything would crumble so soon.
Her fingers found their way to her hair and gripped the curly mass in trepidation.
"What am I going to do?" She whispered. Tears filled her eyes again, as she turned on the tap. Her mascara was coming off and she wondered if she should just take the whole makeup off.
How she hated herself right now for being so unlucky. She wiped the tears from her face. And splashed some water on her face. Her makeup was all smudged and she proceeded to wash it all off.
When she was done, she headed back to the ballroom. She ran into Carter.
"Carter," she said with a forced smile, "It seems there have been some unexpected developments in my company. I apologize for the interruption."
"Oh, it's okay. The call sounded urgent like there was a problem. Is there a problem?"
She remembered Carter once mentioned being familiar with the CEO of the Swan Group of companies, and in her desperation, she decided to ask him for help.
"Carter," she whispered urgently, "you mentioned that you were familiar with the CEO of Swan Group?"
Carter hesitated, his eyes darting around the room. He had indeed made that claim earlier to impress her, but the truth was he had no personal connection with the CEO.
He tried to maintain his composure and replied, "Of course, Anna, I can certainly try to reach out to the CEO and discuss the situation. Let me make a call."
She was relieved as she watched Carter pull out his phone and pretend to dial a number.
Carter decided to make a phone call to his father, a prominent businessman in the city. The ringing of the phone felt like a lifeline as he waited for his father to answer.
"Hello?" came the authoritative voice on the other end.
"Hello. It's Carter," he said.
His father's tone was curt and businesslike. "Carter, what's the matter? Is there a problem?."
He knew his father wasn’t going to like what he intended to ask him.
“Not really. I just wanted to ask you a question."
“Okay…” he said, waiting at the other end for the other shoe to drop.
"Do you have direct contact with the CEO of Swan Group? I would like to have a meeting with the CEO?"
He sighed, "Why do you need to meet the CEO? Do you have a business with Swan Group?"
"Not really. A friend has an urgent situation and would like to go directly to the CEO."
The response from his father was exactly what he expected. There was a coldness in his voice as he admonished, "You should stay out of anything to do with Swan Group. You should consult me before getting involved with them. Now, you need to stay away from that company and its dealings. It's not worth risking our family's reputation."
"But, Dad, I just thought—"
His father interrupted. "You don't know the whole truth. The company you've been involved with has a mysterious background, and I've heard rumors about their connections. It's not something to be trifled with, son. I don't even know who exactly owns it."
"Alright, Dad." The call ended and he turned to Anna, smiling.
"Don't worry Anna, I couldn't get through to him tonight. I had to speak to his assistant. But I'll be sure to talk to him later tonight." He lied.
"Oh, alright. Thank you."
"Do you mind letting me know exactly what the problem is? So I know exactly what to discuss with him."
Anna hesitated for a few seconds. She wondered if she could trust Carter with her company's business. He wasn't a saint but at least, he was a guru in the business world and she needed his help and influence.
"Well... I got a call today and the manager of Swan Group announced that their partnership with my company is being put on hold till further notice. We haven't had prior disagreements whatsoever. It was all so sudden. And what's more, two other clients called and they all said the same thing, they were putting all our collaboration and projects on hold. I don't even know what's going on."
She lifted her gaze to face him, her cheeks flushed. She could also tell from his gaze that he seemed surprised at how much information she shared. Maybe she had said too much.
"Don't worry Anna. It may be a misunderstanding. It'll all be sorted out."
Carter's thoughts, however, were a whirlwind. He had hoped to flirt with Anna, make her fall in love with him, and then marry her. He had eyes on her company. It was growing so fast and he just wanted to incorporate it into his. Apart from the fact that he wanted her company, he also did like her. He had always wanted a successful woman as his wife and Anna seemed like the best partner.
He was elated when she told him about her plans to divorce her husband. Hence, he gave her more attention. He knew she would probably be vulnerable during the divorce process and would need emotional support.
However, the sudden development in her company made him instantly rethink. Maybe he would forget about getting married to her. Maybe until she sorts out her dilemma.
He didn't want to shoot himself in the foot by making a bad business decision, and it would be more excruciating if he married her and her company only for it to crumble later.
And by then, it would be too late to turn back. His family wouldn't want the scandal of divorce tainting their public image.
Suddenly, he knew exactly what he wanted. He wanted to get her in his bed. He knew he would have her soon. She was already warming up to him and that was enough inclination he needed. But it may not be as soon as he wanted. He wanted her tonight. And he would have her tonight.
"I'll be right back to Carter. I want to go say hi to those ladies." Anna said and walked off to a group of women standing in the distance.
He spotted a passing waiter carrying a tray of cocktails and beckoned to the waiter. He took two glasses of the beverage. He looked around, making sure no one was watching, he slipped a small, white pill into one of the glasses and watched as the drink fizzled for a few seconds.
He glanced up and saw Anna approaching and flashed a brilliant smile across to her.
"Alright, Anna. This one's for you," he muttered and handed her the spiked glass of cocktail.
The waiter watched as the man retrieved something from his breast pocket and slipped it into the drink. He curiously watched as the man gently stirred the glass, waited for the fizz to subside and turned to hand it over to the woman walking towards him. Then he knew.He knew the man didn't have good intentions. What's with the rich and being sinister? He wondered. He quickly went in search of Potter, the butler. The waiter found Mr Potter outside. "Sir, you won't believe what I just saw."Potter looked impatient." This isn't time for gossip and chatter Today. Get back to work." He sounded impatient too."No sir, this is urgent. I saw one of the guests drug a lady's drink. We need to do something.""What? Are you sure about what you're telling me?""I'm one hundred percent positive sir.""These people are wealthy and influential people, son. Any wrong accusations, especially of something this grave, won't go down well. So I'm asking again, are you sure?""Yes sir. I know what I saw.""
Carter's face contorted with a mixture of fury and fear as he hastily grabbed his phone from the carpeted floor. Panic tinged his voice as he quickly dialed the security line."Security, this is Carter. There's an intruder in the lobby, armed and dangerous. Get in here now!" His words were sharp. Chris ignored him, his savage mood reflecting on his face. He was conflicted as he watched Anna lying unconsciously. He’d done some hard things in his life, but none of them had been as difficult as letting Anna go and having to watch her get cozy with another man, especially a man like Carter. On one hand, his heart burned with malice that she’d left him just at the turning point. She'd left him after he had given her all the love he could. She'd left him for someone she felt was wealthier than him. In her own words, 'she needed a real man'.On the other hand, he knew she was vulnerable and Carter had exploited her vulnerability. Even going as far as drugging her, just to get her into his
As Chris looked at the scene, he was almost forced to leave Anna in that state, after all, she got what she deserved for trusting a low-life scum like Carter. But he couldn't, Anna was merely shortsighted and materialistic, he couldn't blame her for being that way, she was after all just finding her place in the big elite world and she was bound to fall prey to the likes of Carter. "She wanted the drink, I didn't force her," Carter stated in defense, his hands still cupping his nose. Chris glared at the man and thought of throwing the second punch, but he held back, unwilling to cause any scene that would bring the press and mess with his family's reputation. "I'd suggest you get the hell out of here while you still can." He sneered. Carter's nose was still bleeding profusely from the targeted punch as he fled the hotel room, leaving his coat and cell phone behind, hurried and afraid that security would be involved in what he'd done soon. Christian turned to Anna who was on the
The room hushed as Christian walked in, striding directly to the podium where a compere stood with the microphone, ready to announce his reinstatement into the Robinson family. But Christian didn't want that, he had other plans. "I don't think that announcement should be made tonight." He said beside the willowy young man. "I'm sorry, but it's direct orders." He replied, gesturing to Christian's grandfather, Pete Robinson who sat regally at the left wing on a chair fashioned as a throne. "Do not make any announcements yet, let me speak to him," Chris said as he walked across the room to Pete. "You've been busy tonight for a man who should be reclaiming his place," Pete said, his eyes furrowed at him. "I had things to sort out." He replied and Pete snorted under his breath. "Your ex-wife?" He asked rhetorically and Chris could answer that, obviously Pete had eyes on him the entire night. "I don't think this family needs any cheap scandal, if you're divorced then keep it tha
Hogan Robinson smirked as he saw the flashlights around him, he'd come with his own media team and they were eager to take pictures of the two men facing down, shaking hands with an angry sneer on Christian's face. "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you to smile," he said and then leaned in to whisper, "That is for the front page tomorrow." He added and with a loud laugh, he walked into the party. Christian sighed and turned to hail a taxi just as a limousine parked right before him, the window came down and Potter said, "Sorry I'm late, I had to make sure everything was handled." He said and then got the door for Christian who slid into the backseat and they drove off, glad to be finally away from the drama of the night. ______________________________________________________ Christian woke up quite early, he was not a deep sleeper and he certainly was an early bird. The hotel he slept at was the best in the city, Potter had made sure the penthouse suite booked was perfect and a
Christian remained calm, he knew a meeting was going to be held soon by his grandfather, Potter had informed him so, he had to have his head cooled and ready to handle whatever questions people would raise. Inhaling deeply, Cheistain gave a good sign and relaxed, deciding to put the strange call out of his mind and focus on the present which was reclaiming the respect of all staff in the company. He'd been away for far too long and had to make sure his respect was intact as a member of the Robinson dynasty. As expected, a knock came at the door and Justin jerked up from studying his features and nodded there. "I'm sure Pa Pete is here to summon the staff and announce to you," Justin said, his tone a little excited. "Sir, the chief director requires your presence at the conference grounds." A messenger said briskly as he entered. "You can go, I'll find my way there, I still remember my way around here." He replied and the man left with a nod. "He is." Christian turned to t
Christian merely smirked at the outrage, many members of the table were rather eager to agree with Hogan. Most believed that indeed he was trying to outsmart them all. Pa Pete raised his fist and a hush fell in the room, many stared at him condescendingly but could not oppose his authority. Hogan, now by the table, right beside Jupiter's seat, had his eyes leveled on Pa Pete, almost challengingly. "You ask if Jupiter knows of his reinstatement into the family? Who do you think would dare make such a call if not Jupiter?" Pete asked rhetorically. "You fail to understand him, we all believe that, all we want to see is prove that indeed we are not being played by his...boy." another member of the board said, all the while Hogan nodded to the discord he'd fueled. "It's rather strange how you all suddenly wish to see the same Jupiter you've regarded as a god, a deity, now you're eager to receive confirmation." Christian laughed heartily and leaned on his armrest, staring at
The husky tone came from the shadows and Christian squinted to adjust to the darkness. The bulb flickered once and went off, casting them both in total blackness. Christian remained firm where he was, his hands doing to the pocket of his suit, his left foot firmly on the ground, and his right on a crate. A shadow emerged from the corners of the room threateningly, hooded in what he assumed to be a black mask, covered with an overcoat. "What is this hide-and-seek game?" Christian asked impatiently as the man stood by the obscured window, nothing but a lump in the dark. "So impatient, calm down, now, you're here and we have all the time." The voice said, strangely too deep and Christian decided that it was modified by a device. "I don't think I have all the time, you said you had answers," Chris said as the shadow moved a little and he could finally make out the frame. It was a widely built human, most likely male, 5"7 feet or more. "Oh but I do, I have all the answers
