IDENTITY CRISIS
Bruce was shocked at what MartClint had just said.
If indeed he had been in touch with his mother all this while, it only meant his mother had lied to him all along.
Now, he was left with the decision of whether to believe his mother or this man in front of him, who could be his potential father.
Bruce looked at MartClint with shock registered all over his face.
MartClint continued with his speech.
“I knew about her illness, and I knew it was her time to go. Because this disease has been chronic ever since we got married, and we have sustained here until now, when the doctors declared she could not survive anymore. MartClint could not finish his narration as Bruce cut him short.
“Cut that Crap. My mother had no terminal illness. She only fell sick, and because I could not get money for her surgery, she died, nothing more,” Bruce retorted.
His eyes were sore red, but he maintained a strict and angry face.
Firstly, this man in front of him was claiming to be his father and now was making statements about occurrences he never knew ever existed.
MartClint nodded and stood up from his seat.
He picked something from his study table and handed it over to Bruce.
Bruce took the document hesitantly and looked at it.
The first thing he saw on the document caught his attention, and he sat up, reading through the document.
MartClint, seeing that Bruce was going through the document, continued his speech.
“Your mother had sickle cell disease and was on management, just that she changed her eating habits and lifestyle to sustain her for a long time. She had defied all odds and had lived longer than the expectations of even the doctors.
We planned on hiding all of this from you since we did not want to burden you with that,” MartClint said and paused.
Bruce looked up at him after glancing through the document and shot him a deadly stare.
“If you claim you were with her and knew what was going on, how come I don't know anything about you, and how come she didn't ever tell me anything about you? How come you were not in my life all this while, and why did you leave me to suffer with her for my entire life when you are living a life of luxury?” Bruce bombarded MartClint with the questions angrily.
MartClint sat down on the couch again and heaved a sigh.
“Here is the story, son. It’s a long one, but I will tell you all about it.
Twenty-six years ago, you were just a year old.
I had begun building my empire with my wife, your mother.
I was successful, and business was going well, so I was well to do.
A few days after your first birthday, I received news that my elder brother, whose son was about twenty years old at that time, had killed him.
My nephew was arrested for murder, and he confessed that he wanted to kill his father to take over all of his properties.
The news changed me forever.
I had an idea; I did not want you to grow up to become like your cousin, so I devised a plan.
Growing up in a poor family myself, I learnt a lot about life itself and decided to train you that way.
I arranged with your mother, and when you were three, we made arrangements for you to live in the city with her like a normal person.
The plan worked, and somehow, you grew up to love me without knowing that I was your father.
You were business-orientated just like me, and because you knew you were not from a rich family, you had a lot of experiences in life.
We knew that you had to take over the companies from me, and because of that, we decided to enrol you in a business school, fortunately, you were already interested in going to a business school.
I made sure to give all the money you ever needed for your studies through your mother.
Sometimes, she had to act up as though she had no money, and you were sure to help.
When you were done with college, I intentionally made her take you to work in the hotel as a mere cleaner, and sure enough, you took it up.
The plan was to reveal your real identity to you on your twenty-seventh birthday, which is just about two weeks away.
Unfortunately, she could not live to see that day, and because of that, I decided to bring you back and let you know who you are." MartClint narrated.
Bruce listened attentively.
Although he did not know whether or not MartClint was telling the truth, he felt a hint of truth in it.
Although he did not know him from anywhere, MartClint had been able to hint at some simple issues in his life, and that was convincing enough for him.
He felt a bit of relief talking to him.
Now, Bruce realised he had no option but to believe MartClint.
The only person who could refute or confirm all of these claims was his mother, and she was already dead.
“What evidence do you have to claim that I am your son?” Bruce asked.
He was beginning to feel a little relaxed in his conversation with MartClint.
He had intentionally asked MartClint that question to make him get some proof of the claims of his so-called father.
MartClint did not answer. Instead, he stood up from his seat and walked to his study table, picking up a huge brown envelope from his desk.
He gave it to Bruce, who opened it eagerly.
Bruce found his birth certificate, photos from the wedding between MartClint and his mother, and pictures of himself as a baby, some of which he had seen in his mother’s photo album.
He saw MartClint in his younger ages in most of the pictures, and before he finished glancing through all of the pictures and the documents in the brown envelope that had been given to him, he had cleared all doubts about MartClint not being his father.
