The tracking spell led both girls across the school grounds, through the academy stadium where a crew of maintenance workers were getting the field and stands up to stuff in preparation for the first game of the season. Whenever they seemed to get a fix on the Hunter's location, he would start moving, leading them to continue the increasingly annoying search. Every call they made to his cell went straight to voicemail.
"This is so frustrating!" Veronica growled as she reached up to pick out a fallen leaf out of her hair. "Can't you just use your magic to pinpoint his exact location?" "You think I haven't tried that already?" Mia retorted and raised her palm with her middle and ring fingers curled inwards. An intricate pink magic circle appeared around her hand and her eyes narrowed in concentration at the slowly rotating symbols. A few seconds later, the glyph suddenly flashed with a dull gray light before fading away. Mia groaned at the spell's failure. "His Erasure ability is preventing my magic from locking onto him directly." "Wait a minute," Veronica rounded on the other girl with her fangs out in annoyance. "If your magic can't reach him, how the hell have you been 'tracking' him all this while?! And I swear, if you've been leading me around blindly—" "Calm down bitey. My spell has been tracking the energy signatures he leaves behind. We've been following him step by step the whole way." "Then where the hell is—""Hello girls. What brings you to this side of the woods today?"
Both of them snapped their heads to the left where Lee Shen was sitting on a branch fairly high up a nearby tree. There was an open book on his lap and a lit cigarette was held loosely between his lips. Dressed in black jeans and a white shirt with a dark long jacket, he looked like the stereotypical college bad boy. Mia felt her heart skip a beat when the white haired Asian lean sideways and tumbled off the branch in a free fall. Just before she could draw upon her magic, he righted himself midair to land perfectly on his two feet. His jacket billowed in the wind for a moment before settling down and he flashed them a cocky smile. Mia caught sight of the cover of the book in his hand and hummed thoughtfully. "'The Old Man And The Sea' huh? That's interesting. I'd never have pegged you for a lover of tragedy." Lee shrugged his lithe shoulders. "There are a lot of things you don't know about me." "That doesn't matter," Veronica cut in without care. "If you don't mind, we need to get back to our search. Mia?" The witch closed her eyes and focused on the spell that had been leading them all around for the past hour. Her brows soon came together in a frown and she released her breath. "That's it. The trail ends here." "What are you talking about?" "Are you guys looking for Michael?" Lee asked. "No." "Yes." Both girls looked at each other with contrasting expressions. Mia seemed confused while Veronica was a single step away from sealing the other girl's mouth shut permanently. "It's none of your business," Veronica all but hissed at the Hunter before turning to Mia. "Explain. Now." "I don't really get it either. It's as if his magical signature just... vanished. Like it never existed." "That's because for all intents and purposes, it doesn't," Lee interjected, causing Veronica to glare at him. He smiled back at her. "If you're looking for Michael, you just missed him. Witch girl, you should know what I mean." At first Mia seemed a bit lost, but realization soon overtook her confusion, followed quickly by resignation. "He's in the Ultra Rem, isn't he?" Lee fired off an imaginary gun at her and smirked. "Got it in one."Veronica felt her jaws tighten in annoyance and forced herself not to go on a tirade. She knew of the Ultra Rem, both through her spies and having heard of it directly through the Delgado girl herself. Despite the unspoken truth she found the idea of having what essentially amounted to a personal realm to oneself very advantageous, Veronica had no intention of entering. Not because she did not want to, but because she had basically wrecked that possibility when she had essentially told Michael to fuck off so many weeks ago. Even now she still felt hesitant to meet him. But this did not just concern her. Her sense of duty and her love for her kind had won over her pride.
It irked her immensely how the Hunter's smile never left his lips, as if he could smell her discomfort at having to ask for help. "Do you know how we can contact him?" "Not possible," Lee answered nonchalantly. "But if you told me why you wanted to see him, maybe I could help you out?" Veronica's eye roll was enough to convey what she thought of that option. "Forget it. I'm leaving," she said and turned around to do just that. Mia reached out to the other girl in an attempt to change her mind. "Veronica, wait a—" "Now now, why the rush to leave? You just got here and I'd hate for you to leave empty handed~"Both vampire and witch froze on the spot at the sight of Lee leaning against a tree several meters away from Veronica who was in front. The act itself seemed inconspicuous except for the fact that he had somehow moved fast enough to arrive there from behind Mia without either of them noticing he had even moved at all. Lee pushed off the wall to approach them and Veronica's sense of danger soared at his deceptively pleasant smirk.
"Don't you think I can help?" He asked in his normal carefree tone. "Why should I?" Veronica retorted a bit harshly. "He's an alpha, isn't he? The strongest in your pack. Why would I pick you over him?" Lee nodded understandingly. "True yes, Michael is our alpha and leader. However," his wide grin returned. "His biggest source of power is his Variant ability. Guess who else is a Variant?" Veronica quirked an eyebrow questioningly. "Is that so? What is your ability then? I doubt it'll be anywhere near powerful enough to cut through a mountain top." The way the Hunter's smile turned feral sent shivers down Mia's spine. He leaned forward slightly, allowing the girls to make out the sharp canines among the two rows of pearly white teeth. "Why don't you come and see for yourself, hmm?"~~~~~~~~~
'Just how did I get dragged into this?' Mia asked herself the same question so many others had asked themselves in the past. And like all those before her, it would remain unanswered.
She watched as both the werewolf and the vampire circled around each other. The latter's face was set in a firm frown while the former bore a borderline gleeful smile. Realizing that there was no hope of stopping this, Mia began weaving her magic around the entire clearing for a massive Clouding spell. There was no doubt that this battle was going to be anything but subtle. "Are you ready ladies," Lee smirked and rocked back on the balls of his feet. "I already know you're both gonna lose, but at least try and make this fun for me hmm? I haven't had to use my Variant Ability in a long time." "This smug bastard," Veronica hissed as she leaned back a little towards Mia. "How powerful is your magic, mage?" "I'm still kinda lost on that but I do know a few high tier spells. Don't think they'll be of much use against a werewolf's magic resistance—" "Don't worry about that," Veronica cut in with a smirk of her own. "Just start focused on keeping him distracted."Having never been much of planner herself, Mia was content to go along with the vampire's idea. She was a princess after all, so it was right that she would know a thing or two about leading. Although Mia was honestly surprised that the other girl was so willing to work with her. They had only ever done this once before, back in the alley and against a much weaker opponent that the one they were facing now. Their performance then had been quite good in her eyes an apparently the other girl must have thought the same. But she would have to ask her later and focus on the fight now that the princess had just dashed towards Lee.
Veronica moved quickly, her mind thought quicker. This was a Hunter, one whom she had practically zero information on. Not that she knew absolutely nothing about him though. For example she knew he was a werewolf, which meant he definitely possessed superhuman speed and strength just like she did due to her vampiric heritage. But she had no idea just how strong he was, nor how fast he was, how good his reflexes are and other little details that could determine the way a battle went. And to top it off, his Variant Magic, what was most likely his trump card, remained unknown to her. She had received lessons on the different types of magic that existed and had been taught just how volatile the concept of a Variant was. With so many unknowns, Veronica decided to go with what she had been taught back at her father's castle. 'When facing an opponent whom you do not know what he or she is capable of...' Her figure blurred as she appeared behind Lee, fingernails already extended into razor sharp claws. '... always make sure that your first strike...' She struck out with unerring accuracy directly at his exposed neck above the collar of his jacket. '... is the last.'Her hand shot forward with the speed of a fired bullet.
And right past the surface of the skin on his neck. "Huh?" That question reverberated throughout the clearing despite being barely more than a whisper. Lee tilted his head back and gave her the most shit eating grin she had ever seen before lashing out with an elbow jab that nearly caught Veronica off guard. She moved her body a little to the right to avoid the strike and quickly retaliated with one of her own. That too was blocked the Hunter who launched a counter the moment after. It baffled Veronica how easily the Hunter seemed to be keeping up with her fast paced movements. She was not arrogant enough to think she was the fastest being in her world, or even the fastest vampire in existence, but she had always held great pride in her speed both in and out of battle. Yet here it was being not only matched but even slightly overcome by another! A quick glance up confirmed her suspicions. The Asian's eyes still maintained their dark brown color, meaning that he had not even began to use werewolf powers yet. Veronica's lips thinned in a tight lipped smile. 'Let's see how long your arrogance lasts.'She struck out with a quick double jab which the Hunter evaded near effortlessly, before switching over to a flurry of kicks that had Lee dancing around her. Realizing that she would never hit him that way, Veronica attempted to grab his arm to lock him down. But the moment her hand touched his, Lee reversed the grapple and forced her arm out at elbow. Out of the corner of her eye, Veronica saw him raise his hand to strike. Her eyes turned red in an instant and the muscles in her arm tensed as she activated her Blood Magic. The sudden increase in strength seemed to have caught Lee off guard, allowing her to free herself and retaliate with a sharp kick to the skull.
The Hunter dodged that as well and Veronica smirked as he moved out of her attack and right into the path of a spear of flames headed directly for his head. By the time he had realized the attack was there, the spear was already so close that she could see the reflection of the flames in his eyes. Which was why Veronica could not believe her eyes when the Hunter suddenly dropped below the spear by bending his back to be almost parallel to the ground. The spear zoomed over him to incinerate a tree at the edge of the clearing. In the same fluid motion, Lee rolled into a handstand and brought his foot crashing down on Veronica. She dodged the first one and was forced to put up her arms to block the follow up kick that sent her all the way back to where Mia stood. The witch was frozen in shock at what had just happened, her spellcasting hand still outstretched. "I-I don't understand," she sputtered confusedly. "I mean, I waited until you had him in a corner! There was no way I could have missed that!" "You didn't," Veronica corrected and grimaced at how much her arms hurt from blocking just one kick. "That's just how much of a monster he is." The brunette glanced at her 'partner' worriedly. "Then how are we supposed to beat him?" "We can't." "What?!" "And we're not supposed to, remember?" Veronica reminded the female mage of the terms of the battle. "We just have to get him to use his stupid Variant magic." The realization that they wouldn't have to be forced to defeat Lee brought relief to Mia's face. Unlike Veronica who had only heard or read about the Hunters and their abilities and capabilities, Mia had actually seen one up close. Last month during the skinwalker debacle, she had been paired with Dean for Whitney's rescue. After they had managed to successfully divert the Àtahsaia's attention away from Whitney, Mia had taken her friend and had bolted away as fast as she could on Dean's earlier order. At first she had no idea why he had asked her to let him tackle the demon alone. But the explosion of soul crushing energy that had followed soon after had left an unforgettable impact on her. Now as she stared down the smirking white haired Hunter in front of her, Mia could not help but wonder just how powerful this one was.Related Chapters

Veronica's voice snapped Mia back to reality. "Do you know any binding spells?" "What?" "I have a plan," the vampire said, her red eyes never once leaving the Hunter. "But it requires my target to remain motionless. Can you ensure that?" For some unknown reason, Mia's mind flashed with the memory of her first test back at the Arcane Circle. Specifically the moment the Elder was applying that seal on her. She didn't know how but Mia suddenly felt confident in her ability to not only replicate the seal, but alter it to suit her current needs. "Yeah," she said with a confident smile. "I've got something like that." To her surprise, the vampire princess smiled back at her. "Good. Time to end this." Lee's cocky smirk never left his face as he watched as the vampire released a short shout and expelled a crimson aura from her body. 'So she's finally ready to get serious, hmm?' Lee mused. 'I can actually feel her aura all the way here. Looks like the royal bloodline hasn't lo

The Hunters Volume Two: War Chapter Ten: Failure
They reached the Hunters/witches dorm building after several minutes of trekking across the campus. Most of the courses that the Parapsychology students studied were held in some of the academy's amphitheater-like buildings, all of which were located a fair distance from the dorm areas. The walk was annoying for most students especially when they were in a hurry, but at least it served as a good cardio workout for those who couldn't be bothered to visit a gym. When the two young adults reached the shared common room of the top floor, they were met with the sight of Jade kneeling on the floor at one edge of the room. Most of the furniture and other stuff had been moved to make space for the massive magic circle that had been drawn on the wooden floor with what looked like chalk. The drawer herself was moving around the circle carefully to avoid erasing any portion, while using the chalk-like item in her hand to draw numerous runic symbols within the circle. "Certainly took your

"This is not good." "Yeah no kidding." "Oh shut up Lee. This is serious." All five Hunters had gathered in Michael's room. As both their leader and an alpha, it was only right that his living space was the biggest among the team. With Dean lying on the large bed and Olivia sitting beside him, there was still more than enough room for Lee to lean against the door and Jade who was sitting at the study desk. The owner of the room himself was standing, his eyes fixed in a pensive stare as he watched Olivia glide her hands which glowed green with her magic over Dean's body. No one had asked her to do that since there hadn't been any visible wound on the other Hunter's body earlier but her love and worry for her teammate had driven her to his side from the moment she had stepped into the room. Nevertheless, no one made a move to stop her. Because, more than they were a team, the Hunters were a family who relied and cared for each other. And family always took care of family. "Wh

The order came like a death sentence, which it essentially was. The startled captain actually stepped back subconsciously at the absoluteness of that statement, as did a good majority of his soldiers. Hugo watched with a growing sense of apprehension as a dark grin spread across the face of the dark haired girl, presumably the one called Jade, as she moved to stand in front of the sandy haired young man. "You guys might want to back up a bit," she warned playfully. It took Hugo a few seconds to realize that she was not talking to them but to her own colleagues and less than one second to understand why. The moment the girl took a step forward, it felt like the air itself had become heavier. An indescribable pressure descended on the entire squad of guards, rooting them to the very spot they stood. It was when Hugo felt the ground beneath him begin to rumble and shake that he knew that this would not be an easy opponent. The unknown girl must have been an highly skilled mage with

His boots carved trenches through the earth as he slid to a stop almost a dozen meters away. Jade smirked at the man's hardened expression. That last attack had carried a fair bit more power than she had been using so far. From where he stood, Hugo sent multiple energy slashes from his sword which she tore apart with her bare hands. However just as she had done that, twelve large white magic circles appeared around her, enclosing her within a circle. Each circle was maintained by two ACDC mages with one forming the framework and the other supplying the energy. "And what is this supposed to do?" Jade asked in her perpetually condescending tone. "Mock while you can, invader," Hugo declared in a booming voice that roused up morale among his men. "You have been a most worthy adversary. Your strength and skill cannot be underestimated. But this is where it ends." He threw his sword high into the air and manipulated it telekinetically to remain suspended in the air directly above J
The Hunters Volume Two: War Chapter Fourteen: The First Game
The night sky was only slightly cloudy, allowing the full moon and the bright stars to light up the inky black canvas above. With such pleasant weather conditions, it was no surprise that the first game of the season had been scheduled to hold tonight. By the twentieth hour of the day, Starlight Central Academy was just about ready to commence its first match against Providence University. The stands were packed with students from both colleges cheering and chanting their respective school mottos. There were of course several minor alterations between a few hotheads but those were quickly settled by selected security supervisors. There was still about a quarter of an hour until the match was to begin so the cheer squads of each team took to the fields to raise school spirits. Inside the main locker room for the home team, the coach of the Starlight Comets drilled the summarizations of the strategies and plays practiced over the past weeks into the heads of the burly boys in blue a

Chapter Ninety Nine: It Begins...
Rosaline stared at the ground in front of her where a raised mound of earth was all that remained of one of her longest friends. The pain and grief in her heart was far greater than the ones still wracking her body even as she stood in the pouring rain. Unlike other mounds around her, this one did not have a cross atop it, nor did it have a headstone. Rosaline had felt it would definitely not be fitting to put up a cross on Aria's grave considering how the girl had died. And as for a headstone, she had considered it at first, but that idea had eventually been discarded. After all, even if she were to make one, what would she write on it? Aria was the last of her family to die and as far as Rosaline knew, the girl did not have any other relations outside the Order of The New World. Even within the organisation, the only people she had really gotten along with had been Rosaline herself and Ezra. The latter had been in a strange love-hate relationship with Aria, something that Rosali

Chapter Ninety Eight: A Coming Storm Mia could not stop staring at the girl lying oh so innocently on that white hospital bed like she had not just tried to suck away all of Mia's powers like some kind of energy leech. The memory of that terrifying experience was still very fresh and raw in her mind, leaving her very uneasy about getting any closer than six feet to the girl's bed. She just kept pacing back and forth, imagining just what could have done this to the girl before her. But Rin was in no mood for such indecision. "Hey Mia," the ex assassin snapped the mage out of her thoughts sharply. "What the hell just happened right now?" "I... I don't really know..." She answered, her voice less shaky that it had been a few seconds ago but still just as uncertain. "I mean I thought I had recognized her from somewhere but when we first got here, I wasn't able to get a reading so I just thought I had been imagining things... But this..." "Ok you better start making sense or I'm
Chapter Ninety Seven: Looking Deeper
"As you know by now, all of the Hunters possess a specific Variant ability in addition to the powers we already have by virtue of our werewolf nature," Olivia explained. "Michael has his Erasure, Dean has Absolute Death Inducement, Jade has Space and Time Manipulation and Lee had his own particular brand of Blood Magic. As for me, well the closest thing we've been able to find as a suitable name for my ability was the Eternal Soul." "The Eternal Soul?" Mia repeated in surprise. "And if that name was to be believed literally," Rin leveled the girl with a flat look. "Then it means you are essentially immortal?" "That is correct." "But Shin said that he had both gravely injured you and hit you with an unavoidable attack that was meant to inflict death upon any target it hit regardless of—" "Ah ah, that's where you're wrong," Olivia cut in with a knowing grin. "Immortality does not always equal to invulnerability. You can cut me, stab me, shoot me and I'll still bleed just li
Chapter Ninety Six: Backlash
As the morning sun rose above the sky of Starlight Central Academy, the shrill sound of the wind whistling through the rows of ornamental trees planted all over the school was nearly drowned out by the loud singing from the large open field that was situated just off the north of the school. The pitch was mostly devoid of regular students leaving only members of the two most well known extra curricular clubs in the entire academy: the football team and the cheerleading squad. Both were having their practices on the same field, which was fortunately large enough to easily accommodate the two groups without either having to worry about bothering the other. As the cheer squad went through the complex choreography of their routine, a lone figure sitting on the middle row in the bleachers watched them with unconcealed interest. A few of the girls on the squad had noticed the individual's staring and had begun to whisper among themselves. Eventually one of them seemed to have had enoug
Chapter Ninety Five: The Unseen Shadow
Sometimes Loretta wondered if this power she had been born with was a blessing or a curse. The Celestial Eyes had always been something she had taken extreme pride in. With those Eyes, there was practically nothing that was hidden to her. She could see all the truths of the world, the inner workings of the human mind, even the most concealed secrets of most people she came across every day. But for the first time in her life, Loretta felt completely blind and lost on what to do as she stood on the paved walkway along the avenue that led out of the residential part of the campus. There was a slight chill in the air, something that was not uncommon this early in August since that was when fall started bleeding into winter. But though Loretta had worn a comfy looking long sleeved blue parka jacket and was even going as far as to keep cycling her magic through her body at all times, it did not alleviate the cold that was boring into her soul. At least unlike the last time she had
Chapter Ninety Four: Duty
A single flap of his wings had him closing the distance between them immediately, his swords coming up for a double diagonal slash from both sides. Ezra reacted accordingly by blocking both attacks with a brand new pair of blood axes that formed instantaneously from the swirling magic around him. Vincent raised an eyebrow at the appearance of a second arm in the vampire's body, formed from solidified energy to replace the the Exorcist had severed earlier tonight. But even then, the strength of a Celestial being was not something that could be matched by simple Blood Magic. The axes shattered after a few seconds of bearing the weight of the Exorcist's power and Vincent attacked again. Having fully expected this, Ezra did not make any attempt to dodge since doing so would put him in a far more unfavorable position than he already was. Rather he stepped forward and raised his arm, the one that was made of energy and intercepted the stab. The sword pierced right through the arm but t

Vincent dove down sharply in the direction of Rosaline, having deemed her as the biggest threat among all three at the moment. Technically neither of them were a threat in actuality but the Exorcist still felt it it would be better to be safe that sorry later. The Arcane mage dodged out of the way of the dive-bombing angel/human but was immediately forced on the defence by the Exorcist's constant barrage of attacks. Whenever she tried to make space between them to cast one of her more powerful incantations, the man would always choose to close the distance between them with one flap of his wings. The first couple of strikes she had defended against with her stave had already gotten her seriously concerned since she had felt her own weapon crack ominously. A follow up diagonal slash directed her left arm away, leaving her open for another attack which came in the form of a powerful kick that Rosaline was barely able to block using the stave. The force of the blow snapped the st
Chapter Ninety Two: A Futile Struggle
The first time Ariana Carmine had ever seen an Exorcist had been when she was twelve. At that age, she had just barely matured enough to understand that the world was not as black and white as the teachers at her school had made it out to be. There had been duties, obligations and responsibilities that had been the cause of many arguments in her home back then. Every day she came home from school, she would almost never failed to find one new letter joining the stack on the table by the door. Whenever that was the case, her mom and dad would enter a shouting match that was often so bad that she would always flee into the safety of their attic to escape the noises. Eventually her parents found a way to somehow settle some of their outstanding bills. Right from a young age Ariana had always known that her mom and dad were... special in a way most other kids' parents were not. She had liked it back then, liked how she would come back from visiting a friend's house sometimes and get
Chapter Ninety One: Absolute Power
"Is it over?" Ezra asked as he rotated his left arm in a slow circle. "Did that last attack get him?" "I doubt it," Rosaline said, the irises of her eyes gaining an electric blue glow as she pushed arcane energy into them to boost her eyesight. "I saw him just before that last strike hit. His expression was way too relaxed for someone facing the possibility of instant death. He probably had a way to survive that thing." Ezra looked back at the large cloud of smoke and dust that drifted upwards slowly. The vampire chuckled in disbelief. "Well damn. If he really does survive that, then he is one tough son of a bitch." Beside the dark skinned mage, Aria tightened her hold on her daggers impulsively. "... We have to... We need to kill him..." "Someone sounds like they have a personal grudge," Ezra said with a smirk full of mischief. "Care to share with the rest of the class?" Aria turned to glare furiously at him. "It's none of your business—" "Actually it is," Rosaline cut
