Chapter 3

Alex clenched his stomach and gazed at the government agency building.

Last year, he and Merly arrived, full of love and happiness, unable to wait even a second to sign their marriage papers.

They declared the sacred oath together.

"In good times and bad, in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, until death do us part, we are committed to staying together."

Sealing it with a sacred kiss forever.

He even still vividly remembers the sweetness of the taste of the sacred kiss on her beautiful lips.

Now he was the only one clinging to their oath.

"Trash! What are you standing there for?" Merly calling out to him impatiently. "Go in and get this over with."

Alex’s had no choice. Together, they entered the crowded hall, took a number, and waited for their turn.

The sterile scent of the government office mixed with Merly’s perfume as Alex beside her pleaded.

“Merly, human can make mistake so, I will give you another chance?”

Merly remained silent.

“For all the love we've been through, all the good and bad we had endured, I'm just asking for one thing. Don’t divorce me today.”

Merly snorted harshly feeling like he didn't deserve it.

“If after tonight, our first wedding anniversary you find nothing good happen, you can divorce me anytime you want. I promise you, tonight will be a pleasant surprise.”

Merly’s eyes rolled in frustration. “Alex, do you think one day can turn you from a poor man into a rich one?”

“Yes, it can!”

“Enough!” Merly snapped. “I have tried for 364 days, and nothing has changed. I believe even I give you 10,000 days; it wouldn’t make a difference.”

“Please understand, Alex, I hate you. I hate our life together!”

“Your take me with your old motorcycle, when I’m dressed up and wearing my best makeup, then the rain comes. I got wet! People laugh at me at my workplace! While my coworker arrives with her rich boyfriend in a car.”

“She’s even uglier than me but still managed to snag a rich guy,” Her gaze burning with anger towards Alex as he was the reason for all her miserable life.

“Look at me, Alex! I deserve all the good things in life; I deserve to be with rich people. It's you who don’t deserve me!”

“When your ugly motorcycle broke down, I walked with you and been mocked by all people. How much longer must I live like this?”

“Enough is enough.” Her voice dripping with scorn. “Not a single second longer do I want to be with you.”

“Merly, I swear if you divorce me now, you’re going to regret it!” Alex replied.

“Are you threatening me, Alex?” Merly stood up abruptly, slapped him, her frustration boiling over. “I’ve been patient and kind, but all I have are regrets. I’m not afraid of you!”

The commotion caught the attention of everyone in the office.

A security guard approached. “Is there a problem?”

“Yes,” Merly snapped. “I want to divorce this man, but he keeps resisting. I need to sign our divorce papers now, before I lose my mind!”

"I am saying this for your own good," Alex replied. "Because I am still thinking of all the good things we ever had together."

"For my good? Get out of my life!" Merly's roar echoed through the room, putting Alex in a spotlight of humiliation under all people gazed and laughed.

The security guard eyed Alex, noting his dirty and worn clothes. While looking at Merly’s luxury clothes.

"Man, sign this lady's divorce papers, or I break your bones."

Alex closed his eyes, his heart aching as he tried to calm the rising anger within him. The place that was once filled with love for Merly was now beginning to transform into hatred and anger.

“Merly, except for being poor, have I ever treated you bad in this whole year? Didn’t I give you my everything?”

Merly tried to think one but found none.

The security guard chided, "Man, it is suck. Don’t cling to someone who doesn’t love you anymore; it's sickening."

"You heard him," Merly snapped. "I don’t love you anymore. That’s the issue."

When their number was called, they entered a small office where an old woman sat behind a desk.

"Mr. Alex, Mrs. Merly," she began, "I can proceed directly to having you both sign the divorce papers. However, I recommend you take a 15-minute conversation. If there's a chance you might change your minds, now is the time to decide."

Merly interjected swiftly, “I will not talk to him. He tortured in poverty me for a year, and this time for the first time I do the right thing.”

The old woman turned to Alex, “How about you, Mr. Alex?”

“I don’t want a divorce. It would be marking me as a failure in marriage. Yet, if that all she wants, why not?”

“Yes, it is you, a failure, just accept it!” Merly scoffed. “You cannot make me happy!”

"I've done everything I can; I hope none of you will regret this later," sighed the government worker as she presented two papers.

"She'll regret it," Alex snorted, flicking his wrist with the smart device.

Merly glanced at the device, scoffing, "I won't regret this ever."

“Once you both sign these, you will have no further obligations to each other. Think carefully before making your decision.”

Without hesitation, Merly snatched the paper, signed it swiftly, threw it towards Alex.

“You are the biggest mistake of my life!” She stormed out of the room.

Alex’s hand trembling as he picked up the pen, gazing at the divorce paper.

He had fought a hundred wars and won a hundred, but this time, the supreme leader was losing.
