Chapter 4

Alex looked at the divorce paper.

‘Winning is winning, losing is losing.’

With a heavy sigh, he signed the paper.

He accepted this harsh reality like a true man, burying all his love in the silent grave of agony. He vowed not to return to this place again.

“She will regret it painfully, later,” the old officer muttered.

“Pardon?”

“I heard the commotion you both caused outside. The security came and told me. She wants a divorce because you are poor, right?”

Alex nodded.

The old woman sighed heavily. “You purposely showed her a smart device on your wrist, and there is a small royal logo on it. You’re not just anybody. But she is too oblivious to what she wants.”

“You know about this?” Alex showed the smart device with small royal logo.

"I'm old enough to recognize a Cinderella story about a royal family revealing themselves a year after marriage. I've waited for it my entire life, but it never happened.”

“Some newlywed women who left the marriage department with their husband were gossiping and yearning for it, 'Do you think my husband's real identity is a royal family incognito? Will he surprise me after a year?’”

“After 40 years of working here and thousands of marriages, no royal family had come. Finally, when the real one arrives, she divorces you a day before a year..." The old woman sighed. "She will surely regret this painfully."

"What's the point of her regret when we're already divorced?" Alex chuckled sadly.

“That means she was not worth of your love. If she only had a little patience,” the old woman stood and bowing slightly.

“I wish you good luck in finding your true love, Sir.”

“Thank you,” Alex walked out.

The security stopped him, “Did you sign it?”

Alex nodded, too lazy to answer.

“Good, next time find someone who’s your equal.”

Alex walked away. ‘My equal? A princess from another country? Merly surely fits best as the royal lowest maid.’

He noticed Merly on the roadside, appearing to wait for someone.

Walking over to her under the scorching sunlight that burned his skin, Alex as a gentleman, he believed it wasn't right to part on bad terms.

After all, they had shared a year together through good and bad.

Approaching Merly, he said, “Now that we're divorced, I apologize for any past mistakes. Let's start fresh and create a good life for ourselves.”

Alex offered his hand for a handshake, but Merly fiercely slapped it away.

“Yeah, good for you. You’ve been draining me for a year. Do you think anyone would want to shake hands with a monster that’s tortured them?”

He was baffled, unable to understand why every kind word he uttered was met with anger and blame from her.

“I’ve done everything for you. Can you tell me, besides being poor, what did I do to deserve this much disrespect?” Alex finally snapped.

“You've made all sorts of mistakes towards me! You should apologize. You also wasted my precious time, the time I should have been living my best life. You just wasted it,” she shot back.

Alex countered, “I've lost time too, especially now that we’re divorced. I have nothing! And do you think you never made any mistakes towards me?”

“I never made any mistakes towards you! You know it!” Merly snorted arrogantly.

“You took advantage of being with me for a year, with the most beautiful girl, something people at your level can only dream of.”

Merly's arrogance finally erased any remaining affection and pleasant memories Alex had of her.

Just because men don't want to think about their wife's mistakes like women count every man's mistake and multiply it by a hundred, doesn't mean women have none!

It was not patience that Merly lacked; rather, she had not even a tiny bit of love for him anymore.

Just then, a luxury car, worth $ 50,000 Archelion dollars, pulled up in front of Merly. A short man with a large belly and crooked teeth emerged from the vehicle.

The strength of his cologne struck Alex like a surge of waves.

"Ugor, what brings you here?" Merly's demeanour instantly transformed into one of sweetness, a stark contrast to her previous attitude.

"Oh, sweetheart," Ugor approached her. "You didn’t come to work, and I heard you divorced your husband. I came to see if I could help with anything."

"How sweet of you, Ugor," Merly cooed, sidling up to him. "This divorce has broken my heart, but now I am free from that ugly."

Alex watched them, utterly stunned. He had always taken care of himself, maintaining a diet and exercise.

His body was well-toned, his appearance had once made him the object of many a noble maiden's fantasies, even landing him spots in fashion magazines.

He was also notably taller than Merly.

Ugor, the son of General Manager of the construction company where he and Merly worked, was shorter than Merly, indulging in smoking, drinking alcohol, and leading a reckless sex lifestyle without caring for his health, which only marred his looks further.

Alex realized something painfully then—he was being outdone by this man.

Ugor glanced at Alex. “You don’t need to worry about going to work anymore. You are fired!”

Alex was speechless.

“You should be thanking Merly. If not for her, I would have had all the workers beat you for mistreating her. Kneel in front of her now!” Ugor demanded arrogantly.

“…”

“You are right, sweetheart,” Merly intervened, “and tell her to return his wedding ring to me. It's worth a good amount of money too.”

Alex looked at the wedding ring on his hand, bought with his own money for both of them.
