Chapter 9

"Guys, what are you doing here?" The sudden, sweet call in the tense room was like a melody, instantly turning all heads and calming the stormy air.

They all turned toward the source, beholding a vision of goddess beauty with luxury clothes.

A woman with her long, wavy hair cascading over her shoulders, her movements radiated grace and elegance. Her smile, warm and inviting, seemed to thaw even the iciest demeanour, carrying with her an autumnal aura.

"Miss Sophia," Lucas stammered, hastily releasing Alex's collar as everyone, trying to get a good side of Sophia, returned to their chairs.

Sophia Deneuve, in her twenties, was the golden apple of the wealthy Deneuve family, the CEO of Deneuve Hotel, and top 3 goddess in the Blackwood City.

"Hello, guys," Sophia's melodious voice dissolved the tension, her elegant floral perfume lingering, enchanting everyone present.

"Hi, Miss Sophia," the men responded, their faces lighting up with an almost foolish delight. To them, Sophia was like an unattainable benevolent goddess.

"I've just come from my hotel construction site, but I've heard that the workers there haven't received their directions to start their work from the office," Sophia said, her brow furrowed with concern.

"What's going on? We need to adhere to our schedule, right guys?"

"Yes, yes, of course," the senior project manager interjected eagerly. "We're sending today's work schedule directions now, and they'll start their work immediately."

Moments later, the team sprang into action, quickly providing the necessary instructions to the workers on the field wirelessly.

Sophia, with her arms crossed and striking a charming yet authoritative pose, addressed the office staff, “Now, can anyone explain what the problem was? So, we can avoid a repeat in the future.”

“It won’t happen again,” Lucas assured her swiftly.

“Are you sure?” Sophia probed.

“Yes, Alex can’t be divorced twice, so we won’t face this issue again.”

“He has no more wives to divorce,” added Jack, drawing laughter.

“Nobody would marry him,” Peter chimed in. “He’s exhausted all his luck, and even his ancestors’, on the first wife. And yet, it wasn’t enough.”

“Oh, I see,” Sophia's face lit up, radiating happiness like sunshine. “So, Alex just got divorced, and all of you wanted to support him through this tough time. You all have such wonderful hearts.”

Lucas, who was drinking, suddenly spat out his water in shock.

“Miss Sophia, I think there’s a misunderstanding,” interjected Lucas.

“What misunderstanding?” Sophia puzzled.

“Alex deserved what happened. He’s poor, and his wife left him for a richer man. She dumped him,” Lucas bluntly stated.

Sophia’s beautiful face registered shock. “Oh... poor Alex.”

“Miss Sophia, you misunderstood again.” Peter chimed in heatedly.

“His wife is the real victim, stuck with a poor man like him for a year.”

“Yes, Alex drained all the good from his wife.”

“He’s a bad worker too, totally undeserving of her,” added Jack.

The workers reignited their criticisms. “Miss Sophia, today’s project issues are because Alex snapped.”

“He was hitting us.”

“He hit my face! His senior manager!” Lucas added angrily.

“He even threatened our General Manager and cause or salary to be cut.”

"Come on, guys," Sophia said in her sweet voice. "Let's not be too harsh on him."

With a caring gaze, she turned her glance toward Alex.

"I remember when he first arrived at my construction project last year. He's a hard worker, and it's impossible not to notice how he stands out among the others."

"He is a diligent worker, works with his heart, and very smart," she continued. "Since he came, my hotel project has become more efficient."

Sophia happily continued, "I have the pleasure of working with him. He easily manages all workers, always knows his stuff, and is aware of his surroundings."

"I think he has all the qualities needed for success. It's rare to find someone like him," Sophia said. "Alex just needs a bit more time, and he'll achieve wealth and success as well."

The whole office was laughing hard, thinking it was so funny.

“Miss Sophia, his wife who knew him the best even ran away from him. What future does he have?”

“He said he'll resign, but the truth is Ugor, the Vice General Manager, has asked for him to be fired. His only future is jobless and homeless.”

Since no one listen to her, Sophia walked to Alex’s table a bit far from everyone to hear them, “Man, how can you attract so much hatred, is this your worst day or what?”

"This is just a typical day for me," Alex chuckled, checking his wrist device. "I've sent you this month's planning progress for your hotel?"

"Yeah, and I need you at the site to help me, as usual," Sophia responded as she found the data on her wrist device too.

"Sorry, you heard them, I'm going to resign. You'll need to find someone else to help you."

Sophia's expression shifted to shock. "Come on, Alex. Don’t say that. You know how incompetent the others are."

"I can only rely on you," Sophia pleaded, stepping closer to him. "Please stay until my hotel is completed; it's only two months away."

"I'm resigning today."

"Alex, we've known each other for six months now, right?" Sophia protested, her voice softening. "I thought we had a connection."

"Yeah, a project owner and a project leader. And it ends today.”

"No! As friends," Sophia insisted, her eyes meeting his. "You know this project is important to me. You and I, we're friends, aren't we? A best friend!"

“Impossible.” Alex harshly replied.
