42 Just Sleep in My Room

As dinner progressed, Herman occasionally asked Marcel questions.

"Where do you work now, Marcel?"

"Still at the small shop, Dad." Marcel replied simply. "If it's just this house, I won't make any money."

Across the table, Ronnie shared a look with Shirley. It was the first time Marcel had been allowed to eat at the same table with their family.

"Oh yeah?" responded Herman incredulously. "Didn't you decide to resume the lab? I thought you were busy there, but maybe you forgot your obligation to help with the housekeeping work here ...."

Herman stopped his speech when Shirley looked at him with a sulking gaze.

"Marcel still wants a divorce." Shirley told him.

Marcel only smiled briefly. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw how Shirley sneered at her own plate.

That night, as usual, Marcel took his pillow and blanket as he intended to sleep in the maid's room.

"Just sleep in my room," Shirley invited Marcel hesitantly and reluctantly together.
