"Divorce papers?” Ethan echoed with bulging eyes while frantically trying to grab the papers that were flying around to confirm if they were divorce papers.
“Yes, divorce papers with your signatures on them," Melissa yelled with hatred evident in her tone.
"That can't be possible. I never got divorce papers prepared, not to talk of signing them, so how are my signatures on this?" Ethan tried to defend himself while raising his eyebrows in confusion.
"Don't play dumb with me. You're only upset because I'm not in my room crying into a pillow like a 14-year-old." Melissa paused and started laughing maniacally.
"You thought you could live without my family's money and now that you've been proven wrong, you want back in and you think I'll jump right into your arms?'' Melissa tutted in disbelief.
“Babe, this is a misunderstanding. I didn't sign these divorce papers. Someone must've forged my signatures on them. You've got to believe me." Ethan said, trying to hold Melissa's hands to make her look into his eyes and see that he was telling the truth but she yanked her hand away.
Irritated by Ethan feigning ignorance and trying to play the victim card, she brought her phone out of her purse and showed Ethan, "What about this breakup text you sent the same morning you left the divorce papers on the nightstand? I'm guessing someone stole your phone and sent the text right? Pathetic liar." Melissa sneered.
Ethan grabbed the phone from Melissa and read the text that was sent from his number, he fell to his knees in disbelief shaking his head, he muttered to himself, "No way! There's no way I typed this. But it's my number."
He facepalmed himself as he pondered on how this was possible. In a bid to make sense of it all, he mentally retraced his steps to the day of the accident. He checked the breakup message again and saw the date it was sent and the time stamp.
He noticed that the text was sent around 7:10 am on the day he had the accident, but he left the house before 7 am that day after handing over his phone to Eric, his father-in-law.
He also remembered that Eric had given him some documents to sign that morning which he believed were contract papers but now that he thinks of it, Eric must've deceived him into signing the divorce papers under the guise of contract papers.
Everything dawned on him and he stood up from where he knelt with the realization that Eric must've planned the accident, to get him out of the picture.
Enraged by this, he stood up and pointed to Eric, and yelled out, “It was him! He planned this whole thing, he did all these just to get rid of me”
He turned to Melissa and tried to convince her, “Melissa, believe me, you know he has had it out for me from the first day I came into this house”
“Don't you get tired of lying? This act you're putting up is draining, especially after I've shown you the divorce papers you signed and the text you sent. You want me to believe that it wasn't you but my dad who planned this whole thing?” She replied with a disappointed look.
“Yes, I do and you know…”Ethan tried to explain
Melissa cut in saying, “You don't feel any iota of shame, running in here and making a scene just for everyone to see the foolishness you've always had. To think I even put up with you for five years and in one week Jason has shown me that he's more of a man than you'll ever be.
Melissa's words cut through Ethan deeper than a 9-inch blade could and he caught a glimpse of Eric smiling proudly.
"You think so little of me. Did you try calling or texting me to know what was wrong? Did you even try looking for me? I have been in the hospital for a week fighting for my life. I was gone for just a week and here you are in the arms of another man getting engaged. Did our love mean so little to you?" Ethan lamented bitterly.
"Love? Hahaha. How delirious. I only just realized that it wasn't love I felt for you all these years but mere pity."
"Pity?" Ethan's world seemed to be closing in on him.
"Yes, pity. It was my late grandpa that convinced me to get married to your sorry self. The only reason I accepted to be with you back in college was to spite my cousin, Sarah." Melissa spat.
"Sarah? But what does Sarah have to do with all of this?" Ethan was still reeling from shock at all the spiteful words Melissa was hurling at him.
"You didn't know, did you?" Melissa laughed before she continued, "Sarah had an undying crush on you back in college but she couldn't express her feelings and I found out about it. In a bid to spite her as you know we don't get along very well, I accepted to be with you, and that's one decision I regretted making as I realized that you were smitten by me and I had to play along so as not to break your heart. You turned against me and decided to leave me instead. I felt belittled and betrayed by a common pauper like you, but not anymore."
"What are you saying? All these years and our time together have been nothing but a game to you. It can't be, Mel. You promised me forever Mel. Forever." Ethan tried to hold on to the last thread of hope he had left.
"Yes, it was all a game. I realized that I was suffocated in my marriage to you and now that you've freed me, good riddance to bad rubbish. I think I need to toast to that." Melissa said as a smile crept onto her face as she picked up her glass cup.
"To freedom, everyone" Melissa cheered.
"To freedom." Everyone replied before clinking their glass cups together and Melissa smirked at Ethan.
Ethan was dumbfounded by Melissa's behavior but he made a last attempt to clear things up with her, "Can we just talk for a minute in private, Mel?"
“You still don't get it, Ethan, you have lost me and you have to deal with it. Now take your sorry self and get out of my house right this moment. Security! Throw him out. He has been a nuisance for long enough. I'm getting tired.” Melissa cut in before walking away from Ethan into Jason's arms.
3 men came to lift Ethan from where he was and throw him out, but this time, Ethan didn't struggle or put up a fight. He felt defeated, heartbroken, and helpless. He had been living a lie all these years and he didn't realize. He dedicated so much to his relationship and this is what he got, just because they believed he was a pauper and undeserving of their love?
Ethan came out of his trance when his body hit the ground outside the Graham's mansion gates and Tony rushed towards Ethan to pick him up. He caught a glimpse of Sarah trying to leave the front door to check on how he was, but she was stopped by Eric Graham.
Tony, out of worry and concern, asked, "How dare they treat you like an animal?"
Ethan went from feeling heartbroken to feeling betrayed and then he clenched his fists and all he could see was red. He turned to face the Graham's mansion gates and spoke menacingly, "I am going to make every last one of them pay."
After the drama that ensued in the Graham's mansion, Ethan and Tony went to Paradise Valley, the city where Ethan's biological family resides.Upon Ethan's arrival, he gaped as this Mansion could comfortably contain 3 different buildings and there would still be space. It was 3 times bigger than what he had ever seen in his life. The drive-through had fields on each side with the grasses leveled, giving the scenery a feel of nature's touch. Ethan had some flashes of the times he spent playing with his sister, mother, and father here and noticed the gardens which still had red and white roses planted and this added color and beauty to the classy nature of the surroundings.Tony pushed the imposing mahogany doors to the mansion open, revealing Ethan's grandfather, Mr. Ben Watson, and Ethan's mother, Brianna Watson. Ethan had vague flashes revealing some memories from his childhood.Brianna rushed towards Ethan, holding his cheeks like she was holding her lost gold, "It's him. It's reall
After signing the papers, Ethan discussed with his family to keep his identity secret for now and that he had some business in Beryl City so he returned to Beryl City leaving Tony as the frontline of the business while he made the important decisions in the background.Ethan decided to visit his friend from college, Jack Greene whom he hadn't seen since he got married, with plans of catching up on everything that had been going on in both their lives.“Ethan! It's been a while, man. The last time I saw you was when you got married to that witch, Melissa. Seems you've not been able to take your share of their family money yet ”. Jack said with a chuckle as he shook hands with Ethan and led the way into his home. "You and Melissa never got along. You still haven't told me why though" Ethan chuckled as they walked into the house.Jack's house was a decent modern bungalow with 5 rooms. Jack and Ethan walked into the living room and Jack offered Ethan a seat while he went in and brought o
Ethan woke up the next day and rolled into a sitting position on his 60 by 80 inches queen-sized bed.He stared at the ceiling and for a brief moment admired the beautiful POP ceiling designs illuminated by the diamond-shaped chandelier. He got up and took a walk to the window and looked through the window pane at a vibrant city littered with middle-class working men. He stared at those on construction sites a few meters away, as they laughed, drank beer, and made use of heavy machinery. He looked down on the street and took a glance at businessmen and women running behind time and the performers by the road playing to the emotions of passers-by with the hope of getting some cents out of them.It was a beautiful city for those in power and wealth. He had never seen the city from this view before. And since his ascent up the ladder of social class, he had been too busy to enjoy this view. This was the first time since he could remember that he didn't feel like everything was against hi
Ethan arrived at the Emerald Estate at almost the same time David Graham left. He wasn't dressed in the wealth he had. He had gotten used to dressing simply and quite frankly, didn't see the need.He was still greeted with the chorused chants from the Emerald Estate greeters, “You're welcome to Emerald Estate! Your need is our command”.He smiled and noted that the customer care here was quite good. He proceeded into the building where he was awe-struck by a beautiful fair lady who was bathed in saliva coming from the mouth of an angry man he thought to be a disgruntled customer. He walked towards the receptionist counter to inquire what the issue could be but to his surprise, he was met with a smile and a bow from this pretty damsel who voiced out beautifully, “You're welcome to Emerald Estate, how may I be of help to you today?”He checked himself and was sure that he wasn't dressed as the wealthy man that he was, so he wondered why she gave him such a humble reply with rapt attent
THE GRAHAM MANSIONDavid Graham honked at the gate of the mansion as he listened to “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled. The gate was opened and he drove into the compound and parked in front of the house, opened the door of his car, and increased the volume of the song.He was joined shortly by Claire and Eric Graham who watched him dance heartily. He turned down the volume when he noticed them standing by the door and filled with so much joy he screamed, “It's done! I've finalized the deal today and I'm so certain that I've won the spot. The announcement will happen in a few days but it's done!"Eric and Claire hugged him warmly and looked at him with so much pride and happiness as they have always wanted to own a spot in the heart of the city and the most thriving plaza in Beryl City, ‘the Emerald Estate’. His win meant a lot for them.“I'm proud of you my boy, you've made the family name soar higher than ever,” Eric said as he held David's shoulder with his eyes fixed on him. They walk
The Emerald Estate Hall, the biggest hall in Beryl City was decorated with sparkling lights with beautiful floral arrangements adorning the elegant edifice that was a hall.Only guests with special invite cards were ever allowed entry into the hall for an event. It was an event that had the elites in Beryl City fighting their way to score invites. Most of them were bounced at the gate despite their high standing in the community.Getting an invite or access to the hall has always been a bragging rights privilege, as Government officials from neighboring cities looked forward to hosting their events there.David, Eric, Claire, Melissa, and Jason came as the Graham family and were so excited to be in the hall for the first time after they had been trying to get in for years. They didn't bring Sarah along because they deemed her unfit to be called a Graham and made jokes about what a failure she was."It is magnificent here. Take a look at the expensive art pieces that decorate the walls
They followed the guards down the stairs and their seats were shown to them.Claire and Melissa had to go to the restroom to adjust their outfits, touch up their makeup, and come out like the queens they believed themselves to be.Eric looked around from his table for Ethan, hoping to vent his anger on Ethan and put Ethan in his place but Ethan was out of sight.Eric pondered on how Ethan managed to get into a place like this.“Could he be a waiter here?”“But he wasn't dressed like the other waiters”Eric kept thinking and slipping into confusion, unaware of when Claire and Melissa joined them back at the table. David slammed his fists on the table and said, "They're all going to regret this after an official statement that I've gotten the spot has been made."The loud bang from David startled Eric and brought his attention back as he took a look into the crowd and noticed that the guests were still laughing and sharing giggles targeted at the Grahams for the embarrassment they just
The once peaceful hall was thrown into a capital of chaos. The press present had their best ratings thanks to the shamelessnes of David in his refusal to accept defeat.“Grahams on the loose” that was the headline on every news station and radio station. Graham's refusal to evacuate the Emerald Estate as instructed was met with different takes by those present.“How shameless can they be?”“They probably believed he'll win”“How sad”“I wouldn't wish even my enemy to be them right now”“I'm not leaving here until I get what's rightfully mine! Call your manager, I insist!” David's voice echoed, leaving the hall in pindrop silence.Everyone froze as if time itself had asked them to halt and watch keenly for the unfolding of these events to come. The shutter sound from cameras capturing the moment was followed by the sound of heels coming out from the door on the stage. Each step echoed and encouraged suspicion as to who this figure in a long red fitted gown, with a red shade of lipstick
