So many things had a way of impacting one either negatively or positively but this took the cake.

My heart skipped as I processed the words slowly. Was my entire life a lie? Had she pretended to be on my side for so long even if it was false?

"What are you talking about?"

My grandmother looked away, before smiling. "I know that you would probably be mad at me but that doesn't change the fact that we are all humans and make mistakes. This is one of the secrets I wanted to take to my grave. I guess your grandfather found out too."

My head was spinning with various narratives but I wanted to be as calm as possible so that I could understand what was going on.

"I don't think I understand what is going on here. Are you trying to tell me that you connived with him to annihilate my grandfather? After everything he has done for us? You told me a story of knowing him even before I was born. Was that all a lie too?" I demanded, having no patience for the slow motion she was about to take.

My heart pounded at the same time, also kicking in betrayal. I would never have believed in my entire life that I was going to be facing such nonsense but here I was with no choice but to keep on looking and hoping that my assumptions were wrong. I didn't know what next to do besides to keep on watching. "Exactly what I thought you were going to say, and I understand your plight but it isn't still enough reason for you to react this way. I would have been a bit worried if you had not shown any form of sympathy towards your grandson, but you and I know that he is not completely innocent." Mr. Coker said, smiling derisively. If there was anyone I wanted to punch in the gut so much, then it had to be him. He had a way of getting on one's nerves without even trying and I was not even kidding. "I think that you are mistaken about a lot of things. I totally believe everything that you have said but I still believe that you have lost the major reason why we are here." My grandmother spok

Filled with indignation towards no one but myself I decided to take a deep breath and instead think of what next to do with my life. I was not about to be killed, that I was sure of, but it didn't also mean that I was going to be allowed to enjoy the best part of my life. They were trying to stifle the best thing I could get out of everything that I had enjoyed so far. It was almost like a competition on who would be able to get me to fall first. The only difference was that I was a lot of steps ahead of them and now they had absolutely no idea what to do with me in the picture. I kind of realized how important this was and wanted to reduce the quality of the conversation as much as I could. Josh was on the bed close to me and I figured out that the best way of handling this was also to stay away from discussing with him. It wasn't as though he also had good intentions but couldn't just bring himself to pull the trigger on someone he called a friend. "I can see you acting up, thi

Surprise filled Annie's eyes before contorting into grief, as she probably tried to figure out how I got wind of the information. That was my story to tell and I was not going to give her the opportunity of finding out what and how I knew. "I honestly do not understand what you are talking about but if this is anything like I have imagined, then you must be referring to the incident. I have no hand in whatever happens to your grandfather and even you. I have been on the run since you left. I abandoned schooling because I could no longer take the insults that I was getting." She explained again There was absolutely nothing wrong with the fact that she looked away at my accusation but... "I don't have any idea of what you want me to do to you now that you are here. I understand how important this is to you but I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that this is probably just us trying to make a fool out of this. What if we are just making ourselves happy with the situation but I

There were too many things that I wanted to bring to the limelight almost immediately but I've decided to relax and wait a bit so that I didn't look like I was pushing too hard. If anyone had such a perception of me then it was going to ruin my mysticism. Annie played the dutiful friend by wiping my forehead with a napkin even though I didn't feel hot in any way That was just her way of supporting me and I was pretty impressed by the new development. After waiting for some time, I suddenly decided to take a deep breath and try to understand what the hell was going on.The room went silent on my grandmother walked in. "Don't tell me that he is still trying to come up? He is doing a lot more than I expected him to. Annie, what didn't you inform me when you arrived?" I rolled my eyes at her provocative tone. What the hell did she think she was doing to a girl who had no explanations to tender to her? It wasn't her fault in any way, shape, or form about whatever was going on here, and

The beeping of the heart monitor filled the hospital room, the steady rhythmic sounds of my heartbeat had long since faded into the background of my mind. The scent of strong antiseptic clung to the air, sharp and sterile, an obvious and never ending reminder that I was still in this place— bedridden.I let out a little sigh—I had spent enough time on this bed to memorize the exact placement of every single object in the room. To anyone else that might have sounded a little funny.I noticed how the curtains danced in the breeze whenever wind came, it made me crave for the outside world and not the way the cold sheets felt against my skin. Or the numb ache at my sides. But none of these discomforts compared to the unease brewing within me as I turned my head toward my grandmother who sat silently on the cushioned chair next to me.No matter how many times I had tried to shrug the thoughts off, they just wouldn't budge. She had been acting strange for a while now—too strange. I gathered my thoughts together, overthinking things would do me no good. As much as I was hurt by my grandmother’s words, I would do just as she said.If it was my wealth she wanted, she would get it. “So?” My grandma uttered with a coy smile playing on her face.I barely had time to react as I swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed. Slowly, I pushed myself up, ignoring the stiffness in my limbs. My movements were slow but deliberate. My jaw tightened as I shifted close to face her, a flicker of pain spread through my face, but of course she could care less.My hospital gown hung loosely on my frame, the IV still attached to my wrist, yet none of it slowed me down."SIf that's what you want Grandma,” I said coolly, “ give me your account number then.” My voice was hoarse but firm. "I'll clear everything–everything."She froze, gripping the hem of her dark green sweater. “Jordan, you just woke up, you don’t have to—”"Send it," I repeated with my voice stronger than befor

It felt like I was floating on my air, the world around me felt like it was spinning. I had never felt this type of hangover in a while, it must have been a crazy night…I thought as I tried to steady myself gripping the sheets of my bed wondering how I had been so careless when muffled voices reached my ears.Slowly I tried to focus on the voices when I heard a slight beeping machine, slowly my eyelids fluttered open and I was faced with a ceiling that was certainly strange making it clear I was not in my room."You should have been here earlier." A soft feminine voice uttered, making me incline my head in the direction ignoring the throb in my head. I tried to focus on who was speaking."Annie, don’t start." A familiar voice shot back laced with frustration."Don’t start?" Annie retorted, scoffing. "He was bleeding out, Josh! Where were you?"Blood. The word sent a slow, crawling heat through my chest. My fingers twitched against stiff sheets, memories flickering back in fragments,

A dull headache pant in my head, and beneath my closed eyelid the world felt distant like I was floating in some murky state between consciousness and oblivion. I could hear voices though muffled at first like they were speaking through thick layers of fog. But when I widened my ear the clarity of the words spread in and I recognized the voice as Annie and Josh. “I say we split it fifty-fifty.” Josh’s voice came laced with amusement. “Fifty-fifty?” Annie scoffed. “Are you insane? I’ve been here longer I should get at least sixty” Josh snorted “you do realize I do things around here right you’re just…..”I turned them out, my pulse pounding in my head. Are they seriously dividing up my belongings? I wasn’t even dead yet. A wave of nausea rolled through me followed by something worse, maybe realization. There were the people I’d trusted. The people I’d let into my life. And here they were already deciding how to carve up what I own like vultures over a fresh carcass. Somethin

I don’t. “You want a mayor?” My voice cuts through the noise. They freeze. “Pick one. Not me.” Signs drop. Faces crumple. Brittle. “Trust?” I laugh. Hollow. “Trust got Gregory Tran killed. Trust let Coker fester. 'Trust' is your problem.” I turn to leave. Hands grab my sleeve. Desperate. Clammy. “Please,” the woman begs. “Just… guide us.” I shake her off. “Guidance costs extra.” ''' They follow me home. Petitions piled on my doorstep. Candles lit like a

I had been expecting this message and it came at the perfect time.My eyes scanned the notification on the phone after which I unlocked it to view it better. It was from FriendsMe, a secret platform I and Josh created when we were just kids, whispering about taking over the world in hushed tones.Back then, FriendsMe had been a platform where we could dream big and fantasize about anything. It was our safe haven where we could plot our future and plot ideas without anyone watching us.But things had changed— I had changed.“I know it is you. Behind all of this. The accidents. The disappearances. The chaos. It’s you, isn’t it?” Josh asked.I let out a chuckle as I read the message again. Jordan's POVThe scent of fresh paint and polished wood filled the air as I stepped into the Langston Consortium’s main building. Truly it was fascinating how far we have come and I was so proud of myself.Months of silence had been replaced with ringing phones, busy days and nights, we had so many clients that we had to open a waiting list and that still got filled up.I walked through the hall, hands tucked into my pockets, watching the company my grandfather built come alive once more. It was mine now and I hoped he was proud of the slight changes I made. His death didn't go unpunished and I wouldn't let anything happen to this company no matter the cost.Near the entrance, an older man in a faded suit approached, his steps hesitant. His gaze held quiet hope. “Mr. Jordan, I’ve been with this company for thirty years. My loyalty has never wavered. I—”I lifted a hand, cutting him off gently. “The past stays in the past. It’s time for something new.” I uttered in a finite toneHis th

No one said a word but you could feel it in the air as we waited for the video to play.Mr. Coker sat stiffly at the defendant’s table, fingers locked together as though he wanted to strangle me.His lawyer whispered something, but he didn’t react. His jaw worked as if grinding gravel, his eyes shifting to the large screen where the next piece of evidence played. It was a briefcase exchanged proving Coker had bribed the inspector. The official took it with a quick glance over his shoulder, counted the cash, then nodded. Mr. Coker’s voice came through as he gave clear instructions. “This needs to be handled. No complications.”Gasps rippled through the courtroom.I leaned forward, hands gripping the armrest of my chair. My throat felt dry. Across from me, Mr. Coker’s wife pressed a hand to her mouth, face drained of color. The prosecutor stepped forward. His eyes flicked to the judge, then back to the screen. “For the record, this foo

Others called me reckless, a kid playing with fire, a target painting himself in the brightest red.I sat in the dim glow of my phone screen, scrolling, skimming, watching my own words loop over and over. The sound of hurried footsteps pulled me from the trance. The door swung open. My mother stood there, her breath uneven,

He smelled like expensive cologne and fresh paper, like someone who knew his way around battles fought with words instead of fists.“You good Jordan” he muttered not out of care but hoped I wouldn't make the wrong move.“Never better” I reassured, giving a smile that would be stuck on my face for most of the interview.Soon the interviewer took her seat, a woman with clipped curls and eyes that held the hunger of someone searching for a story, she leaned forward.
