What was the point of achievement? Clearly, it was for the sense of progress and fulfillment. But then, what of overachievers? Were they just glory hounds wanting all the pride for themselves? Were they possibly just addicted to the endorphins that being superior gives to them in spades? Maybe they're just simply better than everyone else around them? Well... I don't really know, and I don't know why this thought even popped up in my head as I made the last step to reach the end of these torturous stairs. I found myself staring at a large door. No room, no space.Just door."I guess this is the room?"Placing my left hand on the intricately decorated door, I held the Firebrand with my right hand as I pushed the damn thing open. Hopefully, Livia and the rest already had the situation under control. It'd make our lives easier since I'm expecting to s
Getting out of cover, the growing ball of ice forming in the middle of the room had begun to crack more intensely. Tiny spikes grew all around its surface, the limited moonlight and my own flames just barely making the needles visible as the situation immediately registered in my head.Getting out of cover was a bad idea."I'm sorry."The ball of ice exploded into millions of tiny pieces. My arms flailed to create a wall of flame to melt the projectiles away, but the speed that they traveled enabled some of them to go through. And what went through hurt like hell."AAAGHH!!! FUCK!"My body was riddled with dozens of pinpricks even as I kept my guard up. It wasn't devastating as a singular spike of ice piercing through my abdomen or anything, but a death by a thou
This was not how I planned this night to go down.I never thought I'd spout this kind of garbage to another human being, let alone someone so young and clearly malleable that doing so would inevitably be detrimental to their own mental and philosophical development. I knew I had a weird way of looking at life in general, but I honestly thought I'd never have the chance to explain it to anyone. Hell, even Livia didn't know about this shit, much less Micah back in the old world."Uhh, can we do a rain check-"I paused mid-sentence as the temperature dropped again. Looking at the Prime whose name I didn't even know yet, her enthusiasm about my shitty worldview shone brightly enough that it barely hid the cold and resigned despair that was leaking through.Yikes.. "On second thought, do you have any other questions so that
In the grand scheme that was life and all that encompassed it, my propensity to think up of random bullshit just to pass the time was unparalleled by none that I knew in my general circle. Kind of pretentious, really, but a hyperactive imagination was both a blessing and a curse if the one to have it was as prone to depression as I am. I mean, really. Spiraling thoughts plus a vivid imagination equals thinking up a ton of fucked up scenarios ranging from me killing myself to me seeing the aftermath of my stupid actions wrecking the few people that I really gave a shit about. Regardless, it was still a skill that served me well both through my old life and this one."And that's the gist of it."I let out a sigh as I finished my explanation for Kelvin's presence. In hindsight, I probably should've checked the other two staircases before I just decided to scale the highest of the
The room exploded into chaos. Arya and Livia held their ground as the first wave of enemies came swarming in. Not that they even made it far as Arya used her power to practically funnel everybody into the meat grinder. A literal bloodbath, red specks flew in every possible direction as the former Prime simply added the spilled fluid into her arsenal. Meanwhile, Livia kept her own side of the grinder neatly clean as her sword swung masterfully against the onslaught of halberds and other bladed weaponry."Uhh... are we even needed here?" Isaac humorously called out, playing with his sword as he chuckled. "It looks like Big Sis and Arya's got it handled."I resisted the urge to chuckle as Isaac commented on the current situation. I had yet to fire a single bolt, and yet the current status of the fight still firmly stayed in our favor. Anne and Kelvin simply stood silent on the si
Pulling the trigger, two bolts flew from my bows and straight into the idiot's head. Thankfully, the Prime didn't wear a helmet; instead, letting his golden locks flowing against a non-existent wind as he kept yapping his mouth. It'll probably get intercepted or maybe won't even make contact, but at least it'll stop him from opening his goddamn mouth."Why, I utterly despise the-"The bolts arrived mid-sentence. Playfair, predictably, moved his head to dodge my attacks."-ability of such ruffians to stage a rebellion!"I tensed up at the possibility of a rage-induced counterattack. This guy was the type to just fly off the handle when interrupted, of that I am sure."However, I do have a proposition to hand out to our barbarian fellows!"....
In an empty vacuum, one might say that one's personality shines through. That the absence of any other influence will let the true essence of an individual come out in all of its glory. While I do subscribe to that idea, I also believe that how a person handles anger and rage can also let an individual shed any sense of apprehension in taking off the mask and simply letting loose. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've subjected myself to such stupidity a few times now. And I'm absolutely sure that I'm a pretty horrible person whenever I let my tempers get the better of me.Which is exactly why I might as well let it rock.My fire-laced bolts flew through the air with piss-poor accuracy. A part of me knew that they won't even remotely hit my target, but that's okay. I only needed it to act as a distraction for the stupidity my spontaneous mind cooked up for our goose chase.
Drawing lots was out. As was an honor system or any kind of fair and democratic way of choosing who goes with who. No... I got to pick the teams this time.It didn't help that nobody could agree on an actual democratic solution."We don't have time to bicker about this shit," I groaned. "Livia, you go with Miss Probability over here.""What?!" my sister protested. "Why aren't we-""I trust you to carry your own weight," I cut her off even as she gave me a cute pout. "That, and I refuse to not have non Nums paired with each other.""I... Fine. I get it," my sister nodded. "Just tell us where to go then.""Nice," I smiled before turning to Kelvin. "Are you okay with this arrangement?"The Prime only smiled as she shrugged, "You're awful
