I didn't even have the time to process what was happening before something blue and shiny burst out from the tree line. Turning off my flames, I was just about to ask my sparring partner about it when a massive boom erupted from beyond the tree line. Birds flew off into the sky, other animals erupted into the clearing; the woman flanked by wildlife on all sides as she herself bolted right onto us.

That was, of course, when I finally recognized the mystery intruder.

"Arya?!" I found myself shouting at the former Prime as she floated on her usual chair made of water. "What the hell-"

"NO TIME! RUN NOW!"

Huh?-

Another explosion rocked the forest behind her. This time, a cacophony of leaves and branches accompanied the shockwave as the debris almost made me raise my sword in defense. The wind sw

My lungs heaved with desperate energy as Arya and I navigated our way out of the forest. I knew it wouldn't be long before we finally reached our destination, but the fact that the sounds of battle still felt like they were only a few meters behind us was really keeping me on the edge of my nerves. It honestly felt like there was still someone trying to chase us, and it was scary as all hell."Arya, is there someone following us?" I called out to my companion as I found myself taking a glance behind us every once in a while."Not that I know of, Dear," Arya replied, her feet now touching the ground as she actually ran this time. "We've established some distance. I'm sure the Lord Stone can keep the three of them occupied."Another shiver ran down my spine as I felt the phantom presence behind us again. This wasn't normal, but if Arya says so, then

Fucking hell... I never thought I'd see the day that I'd be leading the charge for what could possibly amount to a car chase in a medieval world. While we weren't using horses, the engine was far from being capable of going over a hundred kilometers per hour anyway. In a sense, it was just a powerful, roided-up horse that can somehow pull a massive hunk of metal along despite its cruddy design. Well, at least said hunk of metal will finally have its purpose justified so long as it was able to defend against some of the more basic attacks and such."Fuck me..." I whispered to myself as I once again saw the massive cloud of lightning that almost killed me the first time. "Right... Lace! See that cloud of lightning in front of us?!""Yeah?!" I heard our driver through the steel plating. "You want us to avoid it?!""No! I want you to go into it!" I yel

The stresses of panic and anxiety were starting to set in as I wiped the growing sweat off my brow. We were not out of the woods yet. In fact, we were actively charging into it!"Sis?!"Shit... "It's fine!" I called back out to Livia. I guess my outburst was loud enough that she heard it in the driver's seat. "We'll pull through. Don't worry!"With a sigh, I hurried back out to the APC's roof, leaving Arya to Lace's capable hands as I readied myself for yet another bout. Love already had an arrow nocked into her bow as I stood beside her; her eyes scanning our trail as we moved."There is no sign of Lady Static giving chase, Lady Crimson," she relayed. "The storm cloud has dissipated. However, I highly doubt that she will simply give up.""Well, let her chase then," I threw out. "We're runni

Fucking shit... The engine just died! "Livia?! Why'd we stop?!"I didn't hear a response as I pulled myself back up to the roof of the APC. Love looked alert as all hell as I tried my best to keep myself upright, the contrast making the situation all the direr as the one guy that kept blasting us with fire suddenly appeared beside Mr. Baldhead himself."I know not what sort of Denominator Runing could enable such a heavy contraption to move at such speeds, but if it is as strong as it looks, it will clearly be suited to be of use for the Empire."Oh my fucking god, this bitch.I felt Love stick to my side as she aimed her bow at the two Primes. Meanwhile, I held my sword at the ready, my eyes not even taking the time to assess the potential damage in favor of not getting blindsided by these people again. I could only ho

Fuck! Why do I keep forgetting about that girl?! Was I that inconsiderate of someone that actually looked up to me?! "Livia! I need you to drive us to the city!""What?!" my sister protested. "Weren't we supposed to-""And leave Bennie behind?!" I tersely cut her off. "Do you want to starve?!"It was a utilitarian way of thinking about things, but right now, we were in a life or death situation where we might actually need to cut losses. Bennie was a non-combatant whose role in the party was mostly just to cook good food for us. Granted, she might be better at us at it than Livia and I combined, but ultimately, a cook wasn't really needed in a group that was constantly on the move and ultimately utilitarian. She won't be missed, unfortunately, except for when everyone gets withdrawals from her divine cooking....Okay, m

I saw a glance of Love letting loose a bunch of light-tipped arrows when Ruby finally managed to get up from the hatch. The blonde was looking absolutely terrified, what with her face looking as flushed as a tomato and her shallow breathing. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was having a panic attack worse than I was having right now."Are you okay!?" I carefully guided her down to her knees. "You can leave the tools if-""I'm fine, Crimson!" Ruby smiled at me. "Just... Nerves..."Okay? I guess I'll have to take her word for it, "Sure! Now take a look at the treads!"The ground beneath us zoomed at an alarming rate as Ruby and I dipped our heads down towards the treads. The damn thing spun at a rate that would surely take an arm or any other limb off, but here we were about to risk our lives trying to do repairs

Love was panting when she let loose yet another volley of arrows onto her former colleagues. It wasn't the ideal scenario that she had trained for, but she knew she had to push on lest they all die a horrible death. And there were more pressing things to worry about than being murdered by the Emperor's lackeys."I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"Love merely blinked the building annoyance away as she fired off a trio of light-tipped arrows at Lady Static. The girl kept apologizing for things that were completely out f her control, and it annoyed the archer to no end that the Prime kept attacking them anyway. Why bother apologizing if she was going to continue heckling their group despite her apparent misgivings?Another bout of lightning threatened to strike the APC, only for Love to intercept them with her own blasts of light.

In her relatively short life in this world, Tesla never considered herself a fighter. Even after being tested for having the potential to be a Num, the teenaged girl couldn't even fathom the thought of hurting another person in her life. Sure, her sheltered upbringing had not exposed her to the harsh realities of the Empire, but she could still see the reasoning in why most people turned to crime and banditry to make ends meet. As a soldier, she did her best to resolve incidents with the least amount of bloodshed possible; a feat that somehow elevated her into a Factor position, and eventually, into being a Prime before she could even protest such a decision. At first, Tesla thought that her new position as one of the Thirteen could help her prevent the growing unrest in her country. But as her orders came and went, the grim reality of her true purpose was made known to her.She had to kill people.

"A square rune with that many parts? I don't think that'll work out in the long run.""You and me both," I rolled my eyes with the sarcasm of an overflowing dam. Traps within traps, earthen sigils meant to sprout at a moment's notice, the world was my oyster as the goodies slowly accumulated with each stroke of my charcoal.'Don't get too carried away, Master.'I know. I'm not dumb enough to overload the thing before it even came to fruition. And that was the biggest risk to such a massive array as well. With so many moving parts, any wrong line or overlapping rune will pretty much make the whole thing explode. I couldn't stress it enough, even to myself. Do not make this thing more complicated than it already is.'And yet here you are having fun with it.'Don't test me, Ica. Or maybe I'll just assert me being

Fiiiineee... You win, my precious Ica.The stuttering that ensued at the back of my head was like a soothing tune as I looked over my work. The communication arrays were gonna stay, as would the Essence storage runes at strategic parts of the palace grounds. Hmmm.... Wouldn't the communication arrays be two-way anyway? So why even bother with surveillance runes like last time?My hand moved to remove the minor additions I added on the dirt parts of the grounds, leaving me with more space to work with in terms of... well... anything, really. What kind of runes would even work on shaky ground? Dirt couldn't hold anything beyond the basic types of runic arrays. Anything more complex than a three-layered circuit would blow up instantly from the strain. I could maybe run- wait... why not just do that? The charcoal streaked across the outskirts of the pa

*ruummbbllee...*The sound of a sputtering engine echoed from behind me as I drew up yet another set of circles on the board. While I kind of put the general purpose of the massive multi-circuit array at the back of my head, I really should try and solidify that stuff properly before making the main control array, shouldn't I...'Good thing you remembered that, Master.'I grumbled through the dull pain I was feeling at my knees as I focused myself back on the doodle that was supposed to be a defense system for the palace grounds. It was far too small of a circle, now that I thought about it. The size of the drawing did little to help me ascertain the types of circuits that I drew on it in the first place. Squinting even further, it felt as if I was reading my own handwriting from how jumbled and nonsensical it all looked with hindsight.

Plans upon plans upon plans. I feel like I'm repeating myself whenever I say that I'm obsessed about things going right, and if not, to have plans to be able to properly react to the failure. Fool-proofing something small was easy. Doing it again for something on the scale of a war, however, was a completely different beast. The number of variables at play, hundreds to even thousands of moving parts to look over and take into account. The time, the weather, morale, even individuals that might have other ideas and could stray from the plans put into place... It was so much to think about that hours or even days of pouring over the relevant information wouldn't be enough to take everything into account into one's plans. And even if you think you somehow managed to achieve this impossibility, there will always be something so monumentally out of left field that could just absolutely destroy any and all plans along with its sub plans and
