The engine roared to life just as I managed to get back inside the APC. Ruby and Phillipe had already strapped themselves back in for a bumpy ride, Anne had a few bags under her eyes but still looked determined, and Lace was visibly vibrating from where she sat. Arya was still unconscious, and Tesla looked absolutely terrified in her small corner of the vehicle, which instantly reminded me of the fact that I still had a bunch of rations with me. I did promise the young Prime that she could eat whatever the hell she wanted. That, and the fact that I wouldn't hurt her. Wait...

"Lace, get on the wheel. Anne, we move on my command, okay?"

"Got it."

"Oui, Madame."

With my orders given, I stepped towards our security risk. The reality that her fellow Prime must be looking for her right now would probably be the last thing I needed to help work

Grigori gave me a small glance as he made sure to position himself near the back of the vehicle. With everybody- wait... I seriously forgot to get someone to be on coal duty, didn't I..."Shit!"Ducking my head back under the hatch, I turned my gaze to the two unoccupied members of the party. I didn't really care which of the two wanted to do it. What mattered was that someone got in there and began shoveling before we literally ran out of steam."Ruby! Phillipe! I need one of you to get in the coal chamber!" I yelled out. "I don't care who, just that someone be there and do it!""But-"I didn't bother hearing another one of Phillipe's protests as I returned to the more important job of being a lookout. All around us, the people were honest-to-god screaming and gasping at us as we moved forw

Hoo boy... Here we fucking go. With Love running along the rooftops, she became in charge of trying to shake this prick of our tail while I focused on keeping ourselves alive from whatever it was that he might throw us. The first salvo of garbage that got sent our way was easy enough to repel. Consisting of planks of wood and whatever else there was in a farmer's market, I managed to slice out of my way with the Firebrand and the occasional help of the Blink Dagger. In hindsight, I probably should've had the Sange and Yasha with me right now, but the time for regret was most certainly not while we had a literal Prime on our asses. "Give me sitrep down there!" I shouted out just as I felt a splash of fruit juice hit my face. "C'mon! Anybody!" "We're still patching ourselves up!" Livia's voice echoed from the open hatch. "Is

"Fun, huh..."I mumbled out a tick of annoyance as the world seemed to slow to a crawl. My mind whirred with possibilities as my opponent slowly strode forward like we were in bullet time. Meanwhile, I held my ground with my weapons as I felt the wind of movement hit my back. My foot was on the edge of the APC's roof, and my reserves felt like they could give out at any given moment.Right... What're my options here?Taking the briefest of glances, Love was still leading us in a straight line and Lace was following it through, which meant that our platform won't be moving for a few seconds at least... My opponent looked absolutely assured of his victory... Pride? Arrogance? I could probably use that... My flames were usually strong enough to contend with some of the stronger attacks that Grigori and Love could dish out, but how would it interact wi

Think, Crimson! how the fuck are we going to get out of this?! This unrelenting pressure would have to give out sooner, but with how hard it was pushing down on me, I could barely even breathe anymore!"Livia! Love! Put him down!"I cried out. Or at least, I thought I did. I didn't even hear myself scream, more so feel the hoarse vibrations in my throat as my vocal cords did their thing. Hopefully, one of them was able to move and kill this man before we all got squished to a pulp by this unrelenting pressure. My neck eventually gave out as I found myself face planting onto the metal beneath me. All I could see was the unmoving side of some random building as I focused myself on just trying to stay awake through this mess. If I had to wait this shit out, then that's what I was going to do. Even if my chest feels like it was about to cave in on itse

I... I do? "Ica... Are you sure about this?" The phoenix only nodded as she picked up a sword that was sticking out of the ground. Her eyes burned dimly as she spoke, "Absolutely. I want to prove something to you. With this, my point will be irrefutable." I probably looked stupid as a flurry of disbelief and confusion colored my face. Why even bother with this charade? "You do realize that you can just tell me what you want, right?" For a change, Ica smirked, "Yes, but where's the fun in that?" I blinked; my left eye twitching in annoyance as she threw my thoughts right back at me. Cause of course this condescending prick would do this. She was me, after all. "I'm glad you think that," my alter-ego smiled as she twirled the sword in her hand. "I am y

Are we seriously having to retread these thoughts again? After everything that we've been through?"Why not?" Ica shrugged as she snapped her fingers, the world around me fixing itself as our usual table reappeared in front of us. "We have all the time in the world right now, seeing as your mindscape is still as dark as a dimly lit alleyway.""Uh.. huh...."To be honest, I didn't really know what was happening anymore. I might as well just let Ica do her thing while I wait to wake up back in the real world again. Besides, she's good company, no matter how annoyed I may get with her."I'm flattered that you think that, but that's beside the point."Ica chuckled as she held a steaming cup of tea in front of her again. The table held its usual suspects of tea and snacks, myself taking a cup of

Peace... What exactly is peace? Was it the absence of strife? A state wherein there were no problems? Perhaps it was a life with no adversity or challenge? Quite frankly, technicalities were the enemy of straightforward idiots like me that love to pretend they're deep and philosophical. Maybe I was overthinking it, but it's fun to see just how far one can stretch the truth for the sake of their ideals. Maybe someone's idea of peace was silence, which would then make them kill everyone and everything around them just so they could achieve this ideal. Or maybe someone would want war to end, which would end up with them slaughtering and genociding their enemies so that their country would know no enemy ever again. The possibilities of technicalities about random ideas and philosophies could possibly be the only thing responsible for making villains and would-be dictators. I know I already subscribe to the id

E-eh?I was roused from my pseudo-slumber as Tesla's yelling brought me back to the world of the painful living. My joints creaked in protest as I forced myself up, my muscles screaming at the back of my head to lie back down as I ignored them all for proper decorum.Well... "What is it?" I asked the former Prime as she stood over me.Tesla, for her part, suddenly froze up as soon as I spoke, "I... It's..."I blinked as I watched the poor girl fumble over her words. Not that it wasn't endearing, but I kind of expected more after she just barged in here yelling that we needed to talk about something. Still, I probably had to get her to calm down enough so that we can get started with whatever this possibly was."Deep breaths, Tesla," I soothed, trying and utterly failing to stand up and reach

I don't even know what's happening anymore..."Huh... That looks far too complex even for you, Crimson," Phillipe snarked at my work. Technically Anne's as well, to be honest. "A square rune with that many parts? I don't think that'll work out in the long run.""You and me both," I rolled my eyes with the sarcasm of an overflowing dam. "Seriously, why are you here?""You're being annoying."I raised an eyebrow at the blunt delivery of his oh-so-important announcement. Giving him the best sarcastic inquisitive eyes I could muster, I let out a scoff as I began whatever this talk was going to end up as.'Right behind you there.'You always are, Ica. Traps within traps, earthen sigils meant to sprout at a moment's notice, the world was my oyster as the goodies slowly accumulated with each stroke of my charcoal.'Don't get too carried away, Master.'I know. I'm not dumb enough to overload the thing before it even came to fruition. And that was the biggest risk to such a massive array as well. With so many moving parts, any wrong line or overlapping rune will pretty much make the whole thing explode. I couldn't stress it enough, even to myself. Do not make this thing more complicated than it already is.'And yet here you are having fun with it.'Don't test me, Ica. Or maybe I'll just assert me being

Fiiiineee... You win, my precious Ica.The stuttering that ensued at the back of my head was like a soothing tune as I looked over my work. The communication arrays were gonna stay, as would the Essence storage runes at strategic parts of the palace grounds. Hmmm.... Wouldn't the communication arrays be two-way anyway? So why even bother with surveillance runes like last time?My hand moved to remove the minor additions I added on the dirt parts of the grounds, leaving me with more space to work with in terms of... well... anything, really. What kind of runes would even work on shaky ground? Dirt couldn't hold anything beyond the basic types of runic arrays. Anything more complex than a three-layered circuit would blow up instantly from the strain. I could maybe run- wait... why not just do that? The charcoal streaked across the outskirts of the pa

*ruummbbllee...*The sound of a sputtering engine echoed from behind me as I drew up yet another set of circles on the board. While I kind of put the general purpose of the massive multi-circuit array at the back of my head, I really should try and solidify that stuff properly before making the main control array, shouldn't I...'Good thing you remembered that, Master.'I grumbled through the dull pain I was feeling at my knees as I focused myself back on the doodle that was supposed to be a defense system for the palace grounds. It was far too small of a circle, now that I thought about it. The size of the drawing did little to help me ascertain the types of circuits that I drew on it in the first place. Squinting even further, it felt as if I was reading my own handwriting from how jumbled and nonsensical it all looked with hindsight.

Plans upon plans upon plans. I feel like I'm repeating myself whenever I say that I'm obsessed about things going right, and if not, to have plans to be able to properly react to the failure. Fool-proofing something small was easy. Doing it again for something on the scale of a war, however, was a completely different beast. The number of variables at play, hundreds to even thousands of moving parts to look over and take into account. The time, the weather, morale, even individuals that might have other ideas and could stray from the plans put into place... It was so much to think about that hours or even days of pouring over the relevant information wouldn't be enough to take everything into account into one's plans. And even if you think you somehow managed to achieve this impossibility, there will always be something so monumentally out of left field that could just absolutely destroy any and all plans along with its sub plans and
