E-eh?

I was roused from my pseudo-slumber as Tesla's yelling brought me back to the world of the painful living. My joints creaked in protest as I forced myself up, my muscles screaming at the back of my head to lie back down as I ignored them all for proper decorum.

Well... "What is it?" I asked the former Prime as she stood over me.

Tesla, for her part, suddenly froze up as soon as I spoke, "I... It's..."

I blinked as I watched the poor girl fumble over her words. Not that it wasn't endearing, but I kind of expected more after she just barged in here yelling that we needed to talk about something. Still, I probably had to get her to calm down enough so that we can get started with whatever this possibly was.

"Deep breaths, Tesla," I soothed, trying and utterly failing to stand up and reach

Waking up from a nap always made me feel like I didn't do a damn thing to my inherent tiredness, and today was no exception as I forced myself up from my cot. My back was sore, as was every other part of my body, but nonetheless, it was still better than being completely incapacitated. However, the ache in my chest from earlier being more pronounced than when I first took a nap was worrying, to say the least. 'Ah... That could probably be my doing.' I blinked at Ica's voice echoing in my head. It was still a novelty to me to hear her even in the waking world, but it was still a welcome addition to it. But wait a second, what do you mean my chest pain was your doing? An inquisitive tone replied back, 'This... backdoor that I'm using to communicate with you is located at the top of the li

An awkward silence enveloped the entire camp as Tesla stood at the center of it all, her knees shaking as fear began gripping her very being. Suffice to say, however, everyone else around me shared the same look of confusion as I did. The Emperor would kill us all? Wasn't that just a vague threat?"Uhh... Isn't that the plan in the first place?" Lace shrugged in her seat beside Love. "The Emperor will kill us either way, regardless of what we do, so...""And even then, the man is vindictive enough to disown his own heirs," Grigori chuckled from his spot. "It would be a surprise if the Emperor didn't want to kill us."The joking tone that the two employed made the awkwardness seep out just a tad bit. However, I could only observe as Tesla remained stricken with her fear of the man we're trying to depose. She was actually sweating now, and I was star

I let out a breath as I felt Tesla's iron grip on my arm as she sat beside me. I didn't think she'd be the clingy type, but I wouldn't begrudge a girl of her comforts especially if it was helping her mental health recover at unprecedented rates. Although, that was assuming that her grabbing my arm like it was about to fall off was actually helping her in the first place. Nevertheless, it was better than the girl being off by herself in some section of the campfire being miserable."Now... that was something, huh," I weakly chuckled, only feeling the Prime's grip on my arm tighten with my words. "I kind of want to go over plans again now, seeing as we have nothing better to do over some food."Livia blinked at my words beside me. She clearly didn't like Tesla being clingy, what with me still being weak enough to be blown over by the slightest breeze. Unfortunately for her, Tesl

I felt the atmosphere around me get charged as Tesla stated her intentions. It was as if she had saturated the air around us again, only this time, it was metaphorical instead of being literal. And to be quite honest, I didn't know which was worse."Let you... help?" I asked. "Are you sure? I thought you didn't want to fight anymore?""I won't," the Prime firmly reiterated. "I won't fight. I was never a fighter... But I can help in other ways. I just know it."I could only blink in astonishment at her words. I couldn't believe what she was saying. I want to respect her wishes of not letting her fight anymore, but if she was offering her help, then her primary role will always be a heavy hitter. Combined with her clearly powerful Numerator abilities, there was no other way I could see her helping beyond being another fighter to shore up our ranks.

Theory versus execution. On paper, even the simplest of plans can look absolutely fool-proof. I mean, in a game or any other task of note, plans are usually used to streamline execution and maintain efficiency. You wouldn't just jump into an unfamiliar situation without at least some sort of goal in mind, correct? But then, even with plans drawn to the most minute detail, the lack of on-hand information will always mean that said plans would have to adapt depending on the current conditions. Perhaps you planned on scaling a roof or a wall when suddenly it rained and made everything wet and slippery. Or maybe you wanted to eat steak but the beef you saw in the supermarket was too expensive to buy. Either way, plans are merely drawings of hypothetical situations that may or may not happen.Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, our plans were completely shattered as soon as Arya opened her fucking mouth.

It was a bold claim in vague happenstance and badass imagery. My stolen quote had the desired effect on those that clearly understood my implications. The twins, Tesla, Livia, and Grigori all clearly managed to divine what I was trying to say, Bennie, Ruby, and Anne seemed to have somewhat understood my words, and Arya looked like she still didn't care beyond having a knowing smile on her face. The rest, however, didn't seem to know a damned thing."The hell do you mean, lady?" Isaac pointed out. "Of course it still makes a sound.""I feel like you're mocking me," Phillipe glowered in confusion. "I'm missing something here.""What, seriously?" Ruby asked incredulously. "She means something totally different. Crimson wouldn't say something stupid."I blinked as barely hushed murmurs began to

Practice. The word can hold two meanings, both of which held some semblance of significance in my life. For me, it held the idea of bettering oneself, and perhaps the application of one's skills in a professional setting. Sadly, that didn't mean I actually did both things. Well, maybe the latter, but the former was something I rarely did except maybe on stuff that I really gave a shit about. Hell, I didn't even practice drawing blood from patients till I was forced to do so during internship. Maybe I was lazy. Maybe I was being stupid. But did that mean that I liked it? No... Not really.Still, maybe if I really managed to bring myself to care, then maybe I wouldn't be here in the first place. Maybe I'd still be a doctor back in the old world, doing a job that I somehow brought myself to like instead of languishing in ridiculous adventures such as the one I was having now. Heh... Maybe I didn't regret it

Being fugitives running around in the middle of the night, it was probably impossible for us to get in by the front gate without expending a decent amount of effort in trying to hide. Unlike the first group, we didn't have the luxury of having princesses as leverage, no matter how questionable that was. So instead, we followed Arya's infinite wisdom and elected to go through the city walls instead. And when I mean went through...Well, we literally planned on going through the wall."Are you sure this is gonna be silent enough?" I anxiously asked our infiltrations expert, Arya. "Wouldn't there be houses on the other side or something?""The city is built in a way that the wall won't be touching any sort of housing district," Arya explained beside me, her arms crossed as we both watched Grigori prepare to do his thing. "And even then, with Lord Ston

I don't even know what's happening anymore..."Huh... That looks far too complex even for you, Crimson," Phillipe snarked at my work. Technically Anne's as well, to be honest. "A square rune with that many parts? I don't think that'll work out in the long run.""You and me both," I rolled my eyes with the sarcasm of an overflowing dam. "Seriously, why are you here?""You're being annoying."I raised an eyebrow at the blunt delivery of his oh-so-important announcement. Giving him the best sarcastic inquisitive eyes I could muster, I let out a scoff as I began whatever this talk was going to end up as.'Right behind you there.'You always are, Ica. Traps within traps, earthen sigils meant to sprout at a moment's notice, the world was my oyster as the goodies slowly accumulated with each stroke of my charcoal.'Don't get too carried away, Master.'I know. I'm not dumb enough to overload the thing before it even came to fruition. And that was the biggest risk to such a massive array as well. With so many moving parts, any wrong line or overlapping rune will pretty much make the whole thing explode. I couldn't stress it enough, even to myself. Do not make this thing more complicated than it already is.'And yet here you are having fun with it.'Don't test me, Ica. Or maybe I'll just assert me being

Fiiiineee... You win, my precious Ica.The stuttering that ensued at the back of my head was like a soothing tune as I looked over my work. The communication arrays were gonna stay, as would the Essence storage runes at strategic parts of the palace grounds. Hmmm.... Wouldn't the communication arrays be two-way anyway? So why even bother with surveillance runes like last time?My hand moved to remove the minor additions I added on the dirt parts of the grounds, leaving me with more space to work with in terms of... well... anything, really. What kind of runes would even work on shaky ground? Dirt couldn't hold anything beyond the basic types of runic arrays. Anything more complex than a three-layered circuit would blow up instantly from the strain. I could maybe run- wait... why not just do that? The charcoal streaked across the outskirts of the pa

*ruummbbllee...*The sound of a sputtering engine echoed from behind me as I drew up yet another set of circles on the board. While I kind of put the general purpose of the massive multi-circuit array at the back of my head, I really should try and solidify that stuff properly before making the main control array, shouldn't I...'Good thing you remembered that, Master.'I grumbled through the dull pain I was feeling at my knees as I focused myself back on the doodle that was supposed to be a defense system for the palace grounds. It was far too small of a circle, now that I thought about it. The size of the drawing did little to help me ascertain the types of circuits that I drew on it in the first place. Squinting even further, it felt as if I was reading my own handwriting from how jumbled and nonsensical it all looked with hindsight.

Plans upon plans upon plans. I feel like I'm repeating myself whenever I say that I'm obsessed about things going right, and if not, to have plans to be able to properly react to the failure. Fool-proofing something small was easy. Doing it again for something on the scale of a war, however, was a completely different beast. The number of variables at play, hundreds to even thousands of moving parts to look over and take into account. The time, the weather, morale, even individuals that might have other ideas and could stray from the plans put into place... It was so much to think about that hours or even days of pouring over the relevant information wouldn't be enough to take everything into account into one's plans. And even if you think you somehow managed to achieve this impossibility, there will always be something so monumentally out of left field that could just absolutely destroy any and all plans along with its sub plans and
