The streets of Mathema were quiet and still as we navigated our way towards the palace. With Grigori taking point, the veil of darkness under the night sky insulated us from what few guards we even came across. It was a good thing too, seeing as Anne had helpfully forgotten to inform me that she had sprained her ankle due to the blast way back in the wall. As such, we were moving at a reduced pace as I made sure to prevent the maid from aggravating her wounds further. Arya, meanwhile, kept to the shadows behind us; flitting from hiding spot to hiding spot in a way that I never expected from someone so lackadaisical with their job.

Make no mistake, however, that she would keep quiet even if she was pretty damn good at not getting spotted.

"We're at least an hour away from the palace grounds, Deary~" I heard the bluenette's voice echo from somewhere above. "Assuming that we're k

The Feuille flinched at the direct sleight to her craftsmanship, as did I seeing as this was originally my design. Anne bristled even as she seemingly kept her attention on trying to broadcast our signal. But from the way the antenna fluctuated in its blue glow, I knew that she wasn't taking the insult well for her to shrug it off."It's still revolutionary," I countered, trying to defuse the situation before it could get worse. "Have you ever seen someone talk to a person over half a kilometer away? I don't think so.""But it's still limited by such a glaring error~" Arya cooed, smiling all the way as if she was doing this on purpose. "I would think that Dens that had your direction would be better than the rest of the bunch~"I blinked. Anger began rising up from inside me as I felt like I was going to explode."Did y

"Assuming that they haven't changed a thing since I stopped being in charge...." Grigori hummed as he trailed off. "Draw me a perfect square and we'll go from there."Sharing a glance with Anne, we found ourselves shrugging as we mentally tried to get the other to do the drawing. It wasn't that we didn't want to do it. Rather, we were simply extending the courtesy of letting the other do the drawing part of the equation. After a few seconds of wordless communication, I shrugged as I pulled out my dagger and began carving the aforementioned square into the table. My blade dug fairly deep into the wooden thing. The poor piece of furniture didn't seem to like the liberal application force based on how much it creaked and grunted at my efforts, but at least it didn't collapse on us as I traced a beautifully symmetrical square right in the middle of it. Looking to the old man, he o

The static-filled air continued to hum in the background as Ica's voice finally made its appearance heard after days of having my own thoughts be the only thing I heard inside my head. It wasn't much of a surprise anymore, but it was certainly still a strange feeling to hear my own voice and yet have no control over what it said to me inside my head.'You know you just called me strange in a roundabout way, right?'I rolled my eyes. You are strange, Ica, and nothing you will ever say will change that. You're a literal alter-ego inside my head with a complete mindscape to retreat to. I doubt anybody could ever say something like that with a straight face.'Never say something is impossible, Master,' Ica trilled at the back of my head. 'Lest you recall, you mocked old men with archaic ways of thinking back in the old worl

The advent of long-range communication was a game-changer for the entire world when it first became available. The telegraph, even with its hours-long delay made it possible to transmit messages from continent to continent within a fucking day, and that was unheard of at a time where ships and steamboats were still a thing. Come the world wars, and radios were used in everyday life to relay news, orders, battle tactics, and everything in between in practically real-time. Enemies that still had to rely on courier pigeons or some other primitive methods were literally left in the dust as troops moved as smoothly as the information that was relayed between the frontlines and the command center. In a sense, enemy movement didn't seem as blazing fast anymore if Command can swiftly respond with all of the pertinent information available to them. As such, I was hoping that having a literal working radio would make things go smoothly for our

Right, how do we go about actually storming a literal stronghold?"I guess we're going for the attack tonight?" Grigori chuckled."It's not like we have much of a choice," I sighed. "No other entrances. No hidden exits. We only have two out of four gates that we can choose from, and only four people to do it with. I'd be remiss if we actually thought we a have a chance at doing this with just pure muscle."I mean, sure, we had two Primes in the form of Arya and Grigori, but the palace already had one Prime in its midst, let alone any other reinforcement Prime that might come barreling down on us. Thinking that we can brute force our way in was practically suicide."I suppose I can try and do some scouting~" Arya shrugged with a smile. "We're not attacking until midnight, yes? I'll be back before then."

I couldn't believe it. I mean, I really couldn't. Livia missing something so basic... So.. steeped in common sense that I could hardly believe that I constantly called her a natural genius. Granted, I did the same stupid mistakes, but I expected better from her for crying out loud!*I-we... left it with the body...*My idiot sister's voice trailed off from the speaker. Even with the static, I could tell that she was starting to kick herself in the back for her massive oversight. I was still mad, but at least it gave me a few more seconds to get my head cooled off and focus on what's now.*S-sorry, Sis... I... I don't know why-*"Never mind that," I cut her off, knowing full well that she was about to spiral just as hard as I just did earlier. "Focus on the now. Is the body still available to you?"

Sussy baka... Two words that haunted me since their inception for their meaning, or rather, nonmeaning. While I hated having to even think of these forbidden terms, my idiot internet brain just had to keep reminding me of the fact whenever I thought about infiltrating something using disguises. I mean, why? Why would my brain gravitate towards something so fucking stupid when there were better alternatives? Or better yet, why not just be productive and actually think of better ideas rather than linger on two words that don't have any significant meaning whatsoever beyond being a fucking meme?"What's wrong?""It's nothing," I let off a smile as I shook my head at my sister's worry. "It's just a stupid thought."A day had already passed, and yet we were still in the exact same place as yesterday. I had called off the raid, electing to wait for Livia

As the carriage rumbled along its supposed path, I found myself running through the entire plan again one more time. It wasn't going to help much if it all comes crashing down, but it was still worth it to have some semblance of a framework in a scheme as complicated as Arya lined it out to be.With her and Anne still playing the messenger schtick, they'll go along deeper into the palace while Grigori will be stuck with the three of us as he's supposedly guided to a stable after bringing Arya to the palace's inner gates. At that point, we'll have about an hour before Arya supposedly finishes her task of getting to the council chambers. Still don't know what she meant by the council since she glossed over it so fast earlier, but I'll only assume that they knew how to fight enough that even the Lady Bloodmoon didn't want to risk a fight with them in her lonesome. This meant that we had to get there before s

I don't even know what's happening anymore..."Huh... That looks far too complex even for you, Crimson," Phillipe snarked at my work. Technically Anne's as well, to be honest. "A square rune with that many parts? I don't think that'll work out in the long run.""You and me both," I rolled my eyes with the sarcasm of an overflowing dam. "Seriously, why are you here?""You're being annoying."I raised an eyebrow at the blunt delivery of his oh-so-important announcement. Giving him the best sarcastic inquisitive eyes I could muster, I let out a scoff as I began whatever this talk was going to end up as.'Right behind you there.'You always are, Ica. "And?"Phillipe smirked at me as if he knew exactly what I was thinking, "You're wasting

"Let's go crazy..."With a borderline manic whisper, I let my imagination cut loose as my hand moved on its own. Traps within traps, earthen sigils meant to sprout at a moment's notice, the world was my oyster as the goodies slowly accumulated with each stroke of my charcoal.'Don't get too carried away, Master.'I know. I'm not dumb enough to overload the thing before it even came to fruition. And that was the biggest risk to such a massive array as well. With so many moving parts, any wrong line or overlapping rune will pretty much make the whole thing explode. I couldn't stress it enough, even to myself. Do not make this thing more complicated than it already is.'And yet here you are having fun with it.'Don't test me, Ica. Or maybe I'll just assert me being

Fiiiineee... You win, my precious Ica.The stuttering that ensued at the back of my head was like a soothing tune as I looked over my work. The communication arrays were gonna stay, as would the Essence storage runes at strategic parts of the palace grounds. Hmmm.... Wouldn't the communication arrays be two-way anyway? So why even bother with surveillance runes like last time?My hand moved to remove the minor additions I added on the dirt parts of the grounds, leaving me with more space to work with in terms of... well... anything, really. What kind of runes would even work on shaky ground? Dirt couldn't hold anything beyond the basic types of runic arrays. Anything more complex than a three-layered circuit would blow up instantly from the strain. I could maybe run- wait... why not just do that? The charcoal streaked across the outskirts of the pa

*ruummbbllee...*The sound of a sputtering engine echoed from behind me as I drew up yet another set of circles on the board. While I kind of put the general purpose of the massive multi-circuit array at the back of my head, I really should try and solidify that stuff properly before making the main control array, shouldn't I...'Good thing you remembered that, Master.'I grumbled through the dull pain I was feeling at my knees as I focused myself back on the doodle that was supposed to be a defense system for the palace grounds. It was far too small of a circle, now that I thought about it. The size of the drawing did little to help me ascertain the types of circuits that I drew on it in the first place. Squinting even further, it felt as if I was reading my own handwriting from how jumbled and nonsensical it all looked with hindsight.

Plans upon plans upon plans. I feel like I'm repeating myself whenever I say that I'm obsessed about things going right, and if not, to have plans to be able to properly react to the failure. Fool-proofing something small was easy. Doing it again for something on the scale of a war, however, was a completely different beast. The number of variables at play, hundreds to even thousands of moving parts to look over and take into account. The time, the weather, morale, even individuals that might have other ideas and could stray from the plans put into place... It was so much to think about that hours or even days of pouring over the relevant information wouldn't be enough to take everything into account into one's plans. And even if you think you somehow managed to achieve this impossibility, there will always be something so monumentally out of left field that could just absolutely destroy any and all plans along with its sub plans and
