Continuing my trek deeper into town, I've noticed that not a lot of people were out of the shade at this time of day braving the sun's scorching heat. As I've noted earlier, the only people even daring to go outside were those that either had carriages with horses pulling them on or they had some sort of umbrella to shield themselves from the searing heat. And wasn't it just ironic that as both a Den and a fire Num, I was fucking sweating my ass off when I didn't even bat an eye when handling fire? I don't know. I just like the contrast of it all."Fuck me..."With each step of my feet, the heat seemed to sap me of more of my stamina as I eventually reached what looked to be another crossroad. The dirt road had forked once again into two; one leading to who knows where while the other looked to be packed with more people trying to walk about in this fucking heat. I guess the l
It was pretty generous, not to mention far too arrogant of me if I said that I was good enough to cook at Bennie's pace. I knew the style, the technique, and the ridiculously specific conditions that a stir-fry would require, but I was far from skilled enough to do everything at lightning-fast speeds. Well, maybe I could, now that I actually had a healthier body unlike the before times, but I hadn't really tried to cook fast yet.And yet here I was, offering my help without even telling why."Huh? If you're not ordering, stop distracting me," the girl coldly responded, her hands flying as she served up another batch of fried rice. "I'm busy enough as it is."Quickly eyeing the counter, I looked for any sort of entrance that I could open, before giving up and vaulting over the counter like a practiced burglar."H-Hey! Wh
"Why?"Why indeed, "I'm looking for my sister."There. My motivations were clear as day for her to see. Surely it wouldn't be that hard to prove anything, seeing as she already saw me cooking her vaunted rice."Why do you think I have any idea about your sister, lady?" Bennie eyed me incredulously. "For all I know, you're just hunting for her like everybody else."Hunted? Shit. Was she okay- No, focus... "I'm not hunting my sister down, okay? I-""Then why are you looking for her then?"Oh, fuck me... "Cause I'm her sister, and it's supposed to be my job to protect her and not the other way around." Shit. Too much self-loathing leaked out of that one didn't it..."Look, I'm worried about her. I hadn't seen her in about a year now, and
Time. A fairly nebulous concept. While it is ever so present in the world we live in, we, as humans never really understood even so much as an inch of its magnanimous scope. Marching forwards ever so slowly, the flow of time cannot be stopped, much less controlled at will. At best, we could measure its passing while theorizing how it works through models and calculated guesswork. Time travel would never be a thing, simply because if it did exist, then there should've already been news of random idiots mucking about through various time periods with their fancy future tech. It didn't happen though, and thus I could safely say that time travel doesn't exist. Then again, I did manage to get myself reincarnated into a medieval world, so who knows if it could exist somewhere out there. But for now, the ability of time manipulation is nothing but a pipe dream for someone that wants to have such a broken-ass ability.
A new day, a new batch of problems to solve. The morning sun shone through the light haze of dust that seemed to cover this town as I walked through its open roads. Still didn't know the name of this place too. I should probably ask someone that if I ever remember to do so later. In the meantime... "Can I leave you later?"Lace turned her gaze to me as we walked, her knapsack of goodies jiggling at the sudden movement, "Why?""I'm gonna follow up on my lead yesterday," I explained, adjusting my own knapsack of goodies over my shoulder. It wasn't much, but metal implements were always heavy whenever they were plentiful. "I haven't really managed to crack the kid yet, unfortunately."We reached our designated merchant spot for this town. I didn't know how Love always managed to get us permits even back then, but I won't b
"Omu...rice?""Yep," I grinned. "A serving of creamy egg on top of fried rice."It was one of my favorite dishes to have fun with back in the old world. With the monotony of constantly having fried rice with egg every single day of my fucking life, I got bored enough to the point of actually bothering to learn to cook something new. And would you look at that, it was also during a time that I was pretty obsessed with watching cooking channels on the internet. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was flipping eggs like a champ, much to my mother's chagrin due to not liking runny eggs for breakfast.Needless to say, I became an expert on breakfast food out of boredom and necessity.Placing the plate of creamy goodness in front of her, I offered her a spoon before turning to look at whatever ingredients I had
And as I walked through the valley on the shadow of fiery death, I will fear no heat stroke, for it was still a few hours away from midday. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that the temperature was at a pleasant thirty degrees Centigrade, but that was with me already having a distinct resistance against heat-based obstacles due to my own affinities. Realistically, it was probably already pushing thirty-five by now, and that would only rise from there the higher the sun rose throughout the day."And wasn't that gonna be fun for later..."Roaming the market streets with nothing but my own pocket money, I kept an eye out for a handful of ingredients in my mind as I aimlessly followed a crowd of fellow market-goers through their paces. I wasn't in any hurry anyway, seeing that I had only now just remembered how ridiculously long it took to make a decent demi-glace sauce was. Witho
Taking that as my cue, I quickly jumped into action as Bennie wiped the tears off her face from her previous failed attempts at a scrambled omelet. Good thing too, as I was actually starting to see the first wave of customers building up just on the other side of the street."Get the vegetables ready!" Bennie shouted out, her tone sounding strained as she flitted throughout the room. "I'll start mashing the rice!""Got it!"Nodding at Bennie's instruction, I sprang to work and brandished the nearest knife available. With a practiced ease, I made quick work of the vegetables offered up to my cutting board; my hands flying at a speed that would make any trained chef weep. I knew it was pretty dangerous. The speed that I was doing this was bound to make me lose a finger or something as the lightning-fast thuds echoed from underneath my fingers. Grante
