Crashing

A Week Later

*knock knock*

Cameron decided to stop at Roman’s room on his way to work, he thought to ask about the money since it had been a whole week since he had given him the money and he had not heard anything about it’s progress so knocked till he opened up the door.

“I just wanted to ask how far along your friend has gone with the earnings from the bid? I am feeling pretty uneasy at work and you said in less than a week, it’s been a week now.” Cameron said when Roman came out of the room looking tousled.

“Oh my bad, so sorry about that Cam, Alan wanted to wait till the very peak bidding time but he is going to let us know about our winnings by the end of today. I literally just spoke to him on the phone.” Roman said and Cameron let out the breath he had been holding in relief.

“Yesss!!” He said, punching the air in victory when he got out of the building.

He had been sitting on pins the whole week and going in to work had felt like torture. It was not that he had been worried that Roman would lead him wrong but he had just been really uneasy about the whole transaction, it was just so dishonest.

He was sure glad that it was all coming to an end and he could breathe at least. It felt so freeing to know that he would no longer have that dark cloud hanging over his head and he could return the money soon.

Cameron decided that when the money came he would make sure to give Roman some of it along with all of the money that he already owed him, like Cameron Roman was struggling also with a shitty job and dependents, a little extra cash would certainly come in handy for him..

Cameron thought of the conversation he had had with Roman who advised him to resign and he thought it was an excellent idea. Immediately he had the money back he would walk into Trent’s office and tell him exactly how he felt about him.

Thinking about Trent’s face when he told him exactly where to shove his job made him feel lighter and he walked with a bounce in his step.

I was done with being the office lackey and I was never going to allow himself be in that situation again. This was sure to be his ticket out of poverty and I was not going to make sure everyone who had scorned him could see him being prosperous.

He got to the office in a pretty good mood after thinking about all of the wonderful things he would be able to afford pretty soon. Since he would be able to plan and have a more stable lifestyle he would finally be able to buy Lilia an engagement ring and ask her to marry him at last.

Buoyed by his very positive feelings his day at the office kicked off fairly well and as had become his custom recently he made sure to stay away from everyone, slinking around and trying his hardest to avoid confrontation and trouble that could ruin his good day.

By the time the day was drawing to an end he was super excited about leaving and could barely sit still talk more of actually doing the work he was tasked with because the only thing on his mind was going home and getting his money.

Still he had to finish his work before leaving so he forced himself to face what was on his desk and he was soon engrossed in the computer then he yelped and jumped out of his chair when he felt someone’s warm breath fanning the back of his neck.

He turned to see Susan looking at him impishly with a grin.

“What do you want? What were you doing here, don’t you have someone to gossip about?” Cameron snapped angrily at her.

“Why are you so zesty? Can’t a colleague come over and say hi to their cute colleague?” she asked as she bated her eyelashes, trying and failing to look innocent.

Susan had tried to flirt with Cameron before on numerous occasions and even though he had turned her down everytime that did not seem to stop her yet he remained uninterested.

First of all he had a very gorgeous girlfriend, he was not attracted to her and he did not fancy being the constant topic of discussion and if you were playing hanky panky with the chief gossip in the office that was sure to become your fate.

He stared at her with a grim look and when she saw that he had no interest at all in playing her games she rolled her eyes at him and pouted.

“The boss wants to see you in his office immediately loser.”

She turned around and tried to do her version of what was supposed to be a sexy sashay back to her desk and Cameron scoffed then hurriedly finished up his work in a second and rose up.

Ugh, so close. He had almost finished his day and gotten out of the office successfully avoiding any confrontation. For a moment he feared that it might be about the overpayment in his account but he shrugged it off.

If that was the case the entire office would be in chaos, Trent probably just missed being an asshole to the lowest member of staff, Cameron figured he just wanted to exercise his insulting skills on him. At least he hoped that was it.

When Cameron knocked on the door and opened it to see that the company’s accountant was sitting in the chair opposite Trent’s desk.

His heart sank to his belly which felt like it was filled with lead and Cameron knew without a doubt that he had been found out, the day of reckoning had come.

“Why don’t you take a seat Cameron?” Trent offered calmly while the accountant watched him with an inscrutable expression.

“Oh no worries, I have been told to stand more often, good for the health they say.” Cameron said with a lopsided smile.

“Sit down.” Trent growled and he meekly pulled out a chair and sat.

“Mr Jones has something that he has brought up to my attention and I have told him that there is no way that his findings are true and I need you to confirm this.” He said, staring keenly at Cameron and he just sat still, his heart hammering loudly in his ears while he wished that the ground would just open up and swallow him whole.

“Mr Jones, please go ahead and ask him what you want to.” He finished.

“Mr Nikols, I have to ask if you have had any unusual activity with your salary account recently.” The accountant turned to Cameron and asked.

“No, not that I have noticed…” It suddenly felt so hot in the office and Cameron hoped desperately that he was not visibly sweating. “…why, what is the problem?”

“That is odd, i noticed that there has been a huge discrepancy in the payments of salaries that were made this month and it seems that you have been sent more than your usual share.” He said, staring at Cameron unconvinced.

“I have not seen anything like that, in fact my wages were docked.” Cameron said with more bravado than he felt even though inside he was withering like a crush flower.

“Is that so?” The accountant asked in a mocking tone.

“I told you that there is no was he would be stupid enough not to report such an incidence straight to me, not only would he be fired on the spot but I would make sure that the police arrested him and tortured him until he provided every single penny.” Trent said viciously and Cameron stood himself from shivering.

“It is no matter, investigations are still going on and I will know for sure by tomorrow, until then I want Mr Nikols to have himself readily available.” He said knowingly to Cameron.

“Hear that Cameron? Make sure you are around tomorrow and you better be telling the truth about not getting the money or I swear you will wish you were dead. Now get out of my office.”

Cameron scurried out of the office feeling faint but thankful that he at least would be able to rectify this problem, he would get the money and return it to the account and first thing tomorrow morning he would report to the office his “findings”, he was just thankful that Roman was getting his money today.

He could not get back home quick enough and he literally ran up the stairs to the apartment, after he opened the door he headed straight for Roman’s room and before he even reached it he was already calling his name loudly and then he started banging on his door when he got no answer.

When he did not answer his calls for him Cameron decided to try opening it and he turned the knob with a mounting feeling of apprehension. When the door swung open he took a step inside, still calling Roman’s name.

To his utter shock not only was there no one in the room but it was also completely stripped of all of his belongings, not a single piece of clothing was left.

The only things that remained were the shabby furniture that had come with the apartment when they had first moved in and as he pulled open thr wardrobe and the drawers and even looked under the bed Cameron refused to accept that Roman had moved out of the apartment and with his money too, there was no way it was possible.

Refusing to believe that Roman would do that to him he stormed out of his room and checked all the rooms in the apartment, the kitchen, the communal bathroom, the balcony, the store, under the furniture, even behind the jars in the kitchen, no Roman, no note explaining his sudden disappearance.

“Roman this is not funny at all, you need to come out wherever you are hiding. Okay I give up, you win, you got me.” Cameron said, laughing as he said it because he refused to believe that Roman was not playing a prank on him.

He was greeted with silence and now his heart was starting to really race and he was sweating buckets. There was no way that he could have done this to him because then his life as he knew it was over and he could not believe that Roman would be capable of doing that to him no matter the amount of money involved.

He quickly pulled out his phone and dialed Roman’s number and instead of getting the dial tone all he got was the annoying network lady telling him that the number he had called had been disconnected.

Cameron laughed like a lunatic as he looked at his phone screen before he ended the call and tried again and got the same annoying message. He was convinced that it had to be a network issue so he tried again, again and again until I was tired.

Feeling faint he stumbled out of the apartment and started walking down the stairs and out to the street where hr started to ask the store owners out front if they had seen Roman and no one seemed to have any clue about his whereabouts until the old Hispanic lady who would sometimes clean the apartment for them on the rare occasion when we could afford it answered him.

“Roman? Yes I see him. He pack plenty bag and enter big car in the morning after you leave.” She said.

Cameron almost slumped out there on the street, it took all of his will just to be able to walk away without even thanking her, his head in a confused blur as he walked up the stairs and got into the apartment where he sank heavily on the couch, his head in his hands as he began to contemplate what he was going to do with his ruined life.

There was no one to turn to, no one to help him, no relatives, no friends. He was royally screwed and he believed he deserved whatever was coming to him.

Trent was going to send him to jail and hr would have to spend the rest of his natural life fading away in a prison cell if he was not made the prison boss’s bitch first.

Why did he agree to such a stupid plan anyway? If only he had not let greed consume him and he returned that money immediately It came into his account he would not be in this mess. He slid off the couch to the ground and just lay there motionless unable to do anything.

At a point he wished that he could just end it all, It would be pretty easy to do. it’s not like anyone would miss him. As he seriously began to contemplate it he thought of what his mother’s last words had been, she had wanted him to persist and life the best life that he could.

At this point it would have been better for him to die than her, he was useless without her. She had wanted better for him and had tried her hardest for him to have a better life. Not that that was going to make much of a difference now. She had been the only one to look out for him and love him but now that she was dead there was really no point hanging around in this hopeless word.

Then a thought occurred to him.

Wait! He had Lilia, Lilia loved him, surely She would be able to put in a good word for him with Trent, Cameron was ready to work his fingers to the bone and take every insult until he was able to pay him back every single cent. Not all hope was lost, things were bad but they were not the end of the world terrible.

The heavy weight on his chest eased up a little and some of the darkness disappeared and he sat up and looked for his phone, found it and called Lilia. He felt a deep sense of doom when it kept ringing and she did not pick up.

Maybe she had gone some place and left her phone behind which was not very likely, Lilia was addicted to her phone and always had it on her person. Cameron called once more and when she did not pick up again he cursed and pushed the furniture about in a fit of rage.

When he had calmed down he took a deep breath and typed out a text message to her then told himself to wait a little but the anxiety was eating up at him and a minute later he tried her phone again then Roman’s number then hers again and again and again, he did not know when he fell into a tired sleep.

*

Cameron was woken up with from his sleep very abruptly when someone began to loudly bang on the door. He jumped up quickly and ran to the door, his heart pounding loudly.
