The Beating

“Is that you Roman?” Cameron yelled hopefully and he scrambled to his feet then wrenched the door open but his heart sank to the bottom of belly in disappointment.

He took a step back as his landlord who was flanked by two stocky men that looked like they stood in front of night clubs for a living waited in front of the apartment.

“Mr Sam, oh it is just you.” Cameron said tiredly and turned away from the door while he followed him in.

When he had heard banging on the door he had desperately clung to the glimmer of hope that Roman was back, that he had just had a really extreme and needless reaction and everything would be fine but to his extreme disappointment it was just the landlord. As he walked in behind him and wondered why Mr Sam was here and so early in the morning too.

“Is there a problem?” Cameron asked, unable to summon enough energy to deal with anything that did not involve getting back Trent’s money.

“Is there a problem?” Mr Sam echoed before he turned around and looked at one of the menacing men then chuckled. “This joker wants to know if there is a problem.”

Then he turned and looked at Cameron with hardened eyes

Cameron took a hesitant step back, more than a little surprised at the malice in the man's eyes, now what did he have to be mad about? He had set money aside to pay for the rent was already owed and for the next few months too.

“Oh yes Cameron, there is a problem, a huge problem. I am sick of being owed rent and taken for a fool? Do you think that I run a charitable institution?” He said, further surprising him.

“Erm Mr Sam, there must be a mistake because I asked Roman to…”

Wait… Cameron gave enough money to Roman and asked him to deal with the payments, had he also reneged on that too?

Reality was slowly dawning on me and even though he wanted badly to remain oblivious there was no way that he could deny what was happening here, he had been taken for a fool.

Roman had absconded with the money and he had left alone to deal with the ensuing chaos.

“…There has been a mistake Mr Sam.” Cameron begged and Mr Sam nodded.

“You sure are right, I made a big mistake in believing that you and that other bum would be good tenants, I was fooled by your promises to be on you best behaviour but no more! Boys, get rid of this bum and get the other one.” he said and the goons beside him advanced towards him while he took several steps backwards until he was backed up against the wall.

“I.. We can solve this amicably Mr Sam, I have no intention of stiffing you please, this Is all just a big misunderstanding.” Cameron was terrified and he struggled to keep the contents of his blader in.

“It is a little too late for that.” Mr Sam said. “Get him and show him a good lesson.”

One of the men picked Cameron up by the scruff of my shirt like he was nothing but an inflatable human sized doll while the other went looking through the rooms.

“There is no one else here boss.” Goon number two said after he came back.

“Where is your friend?” Mr Sam asked.

“That is what I was trying to explain to you, Roman ran away for your rent money and my money.” Cameron said.

“Well someone is going to have to pay for that and it seems that you are the fall guy… Get him good boys.” Mr Sam said and turned away towards the door.

As Cameron saw him walking out of the door leaving him alone with these men who looked like they ate metal for breakfast it fully dawned on him what he intended to do to him and Cameron started to cry and blubber like a baby.

“Please Mr Sam, I promise I will pay for everything, just give me a little time. I beg you.” Cameron screamed after him but he did not even turn around to acknowledge his pleas.

“Shut up with this whining and take your beating like a man.” The goon who had been holding Cameron said then flung him to a corner of the room.

He cowered and watched them come at him with malicious grins on their faces before they started to punch him, beating him with their fists and legs. He felt a sharp pain in his side and he was sure that they had broken at least one rib, his vision became blurry and it then faded to black.

When he resurfaced it was to a persistent buzzing in his head, his leg and his side, he was unable to open his left eye which appeared to have swollen shut.

Trying to sit up was an exercise in torture and extreme pain as every single part of his body ached badly. he held his head and groaned when black spots appeared in his vision and he thought that he would pass out again.

He checked and realized that it was his phone in his pocket vibrating from an incoming call and when he looked at the shattered screen and saw Trent’s name and he felt physically ill and threw up.

Could this day get any worse?

He reluctantly picked it up and listened as Trent screamed in his ear and threatened fire and brimstone while he stayed mute until the phone clicked off.

he dropped his hand tiredly and looked around at his environment. his torturers had been gracious enough to dump him at a bus stop after beating him up and he wished that they had just thrown him into the sea instead or off a mountain because at least he would not have to suffer this pain or need to visit a hospital.

As he struggled to stand he winced and held his side, he could taste blood in his mouth and when he spat sure enough there was a mouthful of blood instead of saliva.

He started walking with no direction in particular when he realized that could recognize where he was, this was the area where Lilia lived. Maybe he could go see her and she would nurse his wounds and talk to Trent on his behalf for an extension. However she still had not picked his calls or even called back and he was beginning to worry that something bad might have happened to her, he would not be able to bear it if any harm came to her.

As he painfully stumbled towards her apartment block while struggling to ignore the searing pain in his body he was stopped in his tracks when he saw her come out of her apartment building, come down the stairs and fly into the arms of a man.

His insides twisted painfully as the man bent his head to whisper into her ear and Cameron wondered why it felt like he knew the man.

He watched dumbfounded as she stayed in his embrace for a moment then they turned and he helped her get into a shiny new looking sleek car that was waiting on the curb before he turned around to get into the driver’s side and that was when Cameron saw his face.
