Since the beginning, the manager had had his head bowed ever so slightly that it looked like he had a slouch but in truth, he didn't
("Oh, one last thing. Always remember to lower your head when in the presence of these guests.") The manager told Anthony during the interview but Anthony responded with silence at the time.
The manager took that as compliance but he was wrong as he has been glaring at Anthony but Anthony wasn't lowering his head to the guests. Instead, he was looking them straight in the eyes.
Angry at Anthony, the manager wanted to address the topic but couldn't in their presence so he would have to remain quiet about it until they leave.
However, what he didn't expect was that both VIPs didn't seem bothered about Anthony not acting overly subservient around them. They were even more accepting of him than the manager had calculated, especially from the man on the left.
"So how did you get so skilled in cards kid? You also gamble a lot?" Asked the VIP on the left, puffing on his cigar but then his friend interjected.
"What nonsense are you even talking about Quinn? Does this kid look like he has enough money to gamble, let alone enough to learn the skills? He probably learned through some online tutorial video, Yourstubes, or whatever the kids call it" the man to the right responded
"Hehe, you could be right Rollo" Quinn replied and the both of them went on to laugh their hearts out.
"My guardian taught me. That and everything else I know" Anthony replied and the two men smiled at his response, both exhaling a lung full of smoke.
Suddenly, the manager clapped to get their attention "Alright sirs, sorry to interrupt but since your guest should be on his way back any moment now, is it okay if the dealer prepares the card for the game?" the manager chipped in and they agreed.
"Who said you old heads can start without me?" The third VIP said the moment he walked in and they all looked at him.
Anthony was the last to see who it was because he was just busy getting the deck ready.
"What took you so long Franklin?" Asked Quinn with a smirk, and by the time Anthony's eyes were able to see Franklin Crow, the man was pulling out his chair to sit on.
Same age as the other two VIPs, pasty skin and dressed in a carton brown colored pants suit, Anthony stood there in shock, staring at Franklin who sat opposite him.
'It's him, the man who saved Samuel!' Anthony thought with bewildered eyes.
"What's wrong? I got something on my face or what?" Franklin asked after noticing Anthony's stare.
Franklin's voice had more of an aggressive undertone to it than the others but that could just be how he talks.
One thing that drew his attention was Anthony's hair color and the second being that he wasn't expecting him there.
Anthony didn't look old enough to be the same dealer that Quinn and Rollow had bragged to him about so seeing Anthony was like a red flag that caused all the alarms in his head to go off.
"You must intimidate the kid that's all," Quinn said before looking at Anthony and winking at him.
"If that's the case then no problem, but why are we being dealt by a young fellow? What happened to the usual dealer the two of you told me about?" Franklin inquired.
Rollow puffed on his cigar "That issue has already been discussed, and settled. It's not anyone's fault that you decided to go take a sh*t during the conversation." He said then looked to the manager "Okay, no more dulling, time to get the game started"
The manager signaled Anthony and he started the game.
Right in front of all of them, he shuffled the card so proficiently and elegantly that the men were left amazed by his skills, asking the manager where he found someone like Anthony, and the manager smiled proudly.
Anthony dished them their cards and each man used their chips, poker face and whatever tactic they had in their arsenal to play the game because there could only be one winner.
Franklin on the other hand kept staring at Anthony skeptically as he played. Throughout the multiple games they played he never stopped sneaking glances at Anthony, having a pondering face he couldn't shake off
Finally, after five rounds of shuffling, strategizing, and bluffing, the game came to an end and there was only one winner.
"Who would have thought that inviting you to come to play with us for the first time would mean our defeat, huh Franklin?" Quinn said, taking in a cloud of smoke to deal with his loss and Rollow nodded his head in agreement.
"Hmm, I guess it must have been my lucky day" Franklin shrugged.
"I mean, winning three games while Rollow and I only won one each, that's just something. Not that I'm doubting my skills but luck does have a lot to play in this game too and you my friend were on a lucky streak today" Quinn said then sighed. "Well, regardless of the loss, it was still a good game and at this juncture, I should start heading out"
"Of course, I should too" Rollow responded and so did Franklin with "Yeah, me too"
They all left in the same order they came in and once at the door, Franklin halted and took another glance at Anthony who was busy packing the cards to be discarded before he finally stepped out.
A couple of minutes later, Anthony was at the manager's office and the manager was joyed.
"You did way better than I expected, even the guests took a liking to you, especially the last guest who couldn't stop looking at you the entire game. As agreed upon, I have no other option but to accept you into our staff. Congratulations!"
"Thank you" Anthony replied
"Yes, but there's just one problem I'll like to address" suddenly the manager's voice picked up a more serious and hostile taste.
"This should be the first and last time I will ever tell you to do something and you disobey me, got it?! Earlier I told you that you should lower your head when speaking with the guests but you didn't and even though things went by smoothly, that should be the last time you ever undermine a direct instruction from me, or else it's straight forced resignation for you, got it?!" The manager glared menacingly at him.
After a few seconds pause "As you say, sir" Anthony smacked his tongue then left without being dismissed first.
"Stupid brat! I should fire you just for that nonsense attitude but I don't know how much the guests like you and how that would translate if I fired you so you better count yourself lucky" The manager spoke to himself while glaring at the door that Anthony had already gone through.
*BAM*
"Damn, that hurt!" He slammed both hands on his desk and then quickly wried in pain, continuing to curse multiple times.
Anthony who his anger was aimed at was now outside the casino, walking on the pavement in his way to going back to the Untitled Hotel.
Before he could even get far from the Jade Casino building, beside him a black Mercedes with tinted windows drove by, parked a few meters ahead, and stepping out was Franklin Crow. He had been waiting for Anthony to come out.
"Mr. Franklin?" Anthony paused and then questioned, "Why are you still here?"
"Listen, I'll only ask you this question once so you better give me a good answer if you don't want me reporting on you. Why did you manipulate the deck and CHEAT on the game for me to win?" Franklin asked, glaring at Anthony and expecting a good enough answer back.
A promise I made on an earlier chapter is about to be delivered, keep reading to find out
'The features, the resemblance, it's all so uncanny' Even in the intensity of the reproach, a conflicting thought lingered in Franklin's mind as he stared at Anthony. Anthony's face didn't undergo any negative changes after being accused, he remained as unfazed and stoic as ever "What are you talking about Sir, cheating in what game?" "Don't play dumb with me kid, the others may have been too distracted to notice but I had my eyes on you the entire time and I know sleight of hand when I see it. Nothing can escape these trained eyes of mine" Franklin said. "Okay sir, sounds like you're talking about a magic show you must have gone to. Sleight of hand? How does that have anything to do with me, a simple part-timer?" Anthony scrunched his eyebrows, tilting his head to the left. "Why you!" Franklin exclaimed, smacking his tongue afterward. 'Who is this kid? He couldn't be him could he?' Franklin's glare became even more intense and with that, it was evident that he wasn't going to bac
["Hello? Who is this?"] Finally, after three attempts his call was answered. "This is Anthony, Mr's Faller. I was just calling to see how Samuel was doing" he sat in the bed with his shoes off but still had his casino dealer outfit on. ["Umm, he's fine. It's already way past his bedtime so he should be in bed sleeping. Is anything the matter?"] After hearing this, Anthony second-guessed himself on if Samuel was okay or not. Anthony thought that he might just be worrying for nothing. "It's nothing, I just wanted to call since it's been a while since I last did, that's all" he smiled ["It has been a minute since you called but honestly I can't blame you, not when you and my husband have something so serious like Ama— Oh, sorry I mentioned that"] she covered her mouth. Anthony chuckled as a way to lighten the mood "You don't have to be ma, I also know how this has shaken your family so don't hold yourself on my account. I'll be just fine" he smiled ["I'm glad to hear that and you m
Chaos ran wild as many of the patients in the main entrance of The Meteor Garden hospital scattered for either their safety or as a knee-jerk response to Anthony and Franklin. Some were patients with high sensitivity like epilepsy, autism, or Tourette so the sudden act of violence was enough to trigger them. Being among the few staff there and a proactive one at that, the nurse behind the counter hurriedly grabbed the landline and put out a call. "Can we get some medics over here in the main area, right now?! We need as much help as possible with handling the patients and also to put a stop to a visitor who's gone crazy!" she yelled into the mouthpiece then slammed the landline back on itself. The nurses were able to get to the more mentally balanced patients who only fell to the floor while trying to move away from Anthony and Franklin. As for those currently going crazy, they needed more serious help from the paramedics who were able-bodied enough to appropriately handle the sit
The paramedic who had the syringe in his hand paused, jaw dropped, leaning back and filled with utter confusion. Anthony who was seeing all of this instantly got a look of disgust aimed at Franklin and what he just did. "What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you do that, take away the only thing that’s saving your life right now?!" Anthony asked while he grimaced. He pulled himself away from Franklin and then with the anger still in him but now also mixed with a state of confusion, he pushed a weakened Franklin to the ground. "Just what the hell do you want from me?!" Anthony yelled in an exasperated manner, looking down at Franklin who was holding on to his neck and trying to breathe in as much air as he possibly could. Contrary to being the one who had inflicted pain on everyone else, physically or otherwise, Anthony looked like he was in more agony than anyone else, huffing and trying to find a way to get calm. "Alright you fool, that's enough from you. Just take a look a
"You're the—" Franklin was cut short by Anthony "You're not seriously going to talk to me while you’re like that, groveling like a lost puppy, are you? It's overkill, so just stop!" he frowned. "Huh?" Franklin raised his head in surprise but seeing that Anthony was being serious, he nodded. He said, "As you wish, young master" standing up and so did Anthony. Franklin dusted his knees, carrying on "As I was saying, you Young Master are the long lost, thought to be deceased, real heir to the Midnight family fortune and I'm here to take you back home so that you can reclaim what rightfully belongs to you" Anthony tilted his head to the left, slowly "Midnight? Who and what's that supposed to be and how am I the rightful heir as you say?" He grimaced skeptically. "MIDNIGHT, that's the real name of your family lineage, young master. I know you’re confused but the truth is that you aren't a STAR— No, pardon my blunder because what I just said could have come off wrong and easily misund
("Franklin, I know this isn't much to make up for the heartaches I've caused, but if you'll accept it, let this gift grant you freedom") The unexpected question from Anthony forced a memory to pop into Franklin's head. This was a memory that from the looks on his face, he didn't understand the significance of it either. 'Why am I remembering this now?' He questioned himself before taking in a very deep breath with closed eyes and releasing it in a calm sigh. "Young Master, the truth is I have no idea why you can't read my thoughts either. The best I can do is remember a moment in my past, during my former master’s last moments, he bestowed on me a gift, with words hoping that I obtain freedom. Though I didn't understand what he meant by that at the time, my guess is that's the reason you can't access my mind. I've been freed from another's control" Anthony watched him, thinking to himself 'if what he says is true then does that mean I too can manipulate others’ minds beyond just r
Instantly, Anthony's body wanted to start vibrating as the anger he was feeling from seeing Samuel hurt had skyrocketed out of control. But, just as quickly he contained it with a deep breath and a sigh 'I guess it was a result of how hard Franklin must have grabbed his wrist when he tried to save him from being hit. A sprained wrist is a much better alternative to what could have happened if he wasn't there. Looking back now I guess I was kinda being hard on him for no reason’ Anthony thought in both acceptance and guilt. Meanwhile, an angered Mr's Faller who wasn't there when the incident happened and so didn't know what Anthony does, dragged Samuel along to where Franklin was standing to confront him. Anthony followed behind her, wanting to smooth things over as he was the only person who knew both parties and was there when the accident happened, so he felt like he knew enough to try and defend Franklin. "You should try and get calm Mr's Faller, I don't think you should be angr
"Huh?!" Samuel exclaimed and so did his mother. She said "That's going too far Anthony! How can you tell him to do that in front of Samuel. This has to stop, right now!" her anger had switched targets. Anthony who was being reproached didn't look bothered by her contention with what he had said. He looked at her through the corner of his eyes and responded "This is what has to happen Mr's Faller so don't try to interrupt it" 'His eyes, why does he look so different from before? He's frightening me. Just who did Maxwell bring home into our family as a friend?' Mr's Faller thought, genuinely terrified by what was going on. Everything sounded absurd but what she never expected to happen in a million years was to see Franklin going down to the ground to grovel at Samuel’s feet. "Huh? What are you doing?" She turned to question Franklin with a look of disgust on her face. "As the friends of my Young Master, it is my greatest mistake to have hurt you and not immediately repent and apo
