"Ah! I caught you!" Exclaimed a panting voice
Seeing Samuel getting shoved and falling towards the street, Anthony screamed out his name, reflexively reaching out with one of his hands even though the distance between them was too great that he wouldn't even be able to do anything.
The driver of the incoming truck panicked and smashed the brakes as hard as he could.
Unfortunately, the distance between them was so small that their impact was certain, but still, he tried.
The truck's tires skid forward, about to hit Samuel while at the other side of the road Anthony watched, unable to do anything.
Suddenly, his eyes flicked to a few meters behind Samuel where he saw a man, an aged man in a carton brown pants suit, reaching out for Samuel.
Everything happened so fast that before Anthony knew it the aged man had grabbed onto Samuel's wrist, then pulled the preteen towards himself.
*VROOM*
The truck passed, nobody was hit and the person on the passenger seat, whose heart felt like it was about to explode looked out his window, to see Samuel and the aged man who had prevented the accident from happening.
"What the f*ck was that?!" The driver exclaimed.
"I don't know man but looks like we're in the clear. Better keep driving and let's get out of here!" the passenger replied, looking through the side mirror and seeing how they had almost caused an accident behind them with how abruptly they tried to break.
It would have been bad if by trying to avoid Samuel they ended up causing more damage to others, but fortunately, the drivers behind them were smart enough to give a good three seconds distance window between themselves and the truck so nothing bad happened.
This was a three-lane road and the lane where the accident almost happened seemed a bit chaotic and was trying to get back to normal but Anthony who was a bit relieved that Samuel was just saved still wanted to get to him.
Scatterbrained he didn't know when he dropped his phone on the pavement, causing its screen to crack and he rushed into the road, trying to get to the other side but…
*HONK*
"Hey, you crazy or what?!" The moment he stepped onto the road he was almost rammed into by a car.
He wasn't thinking or watching the road for oncoming cars when he stepped on so this brought him out of his trance.
The road was very busy so he had to be extra careful if he wanted to go through it and there was no traffic light around to help him safely do that either.
"Sorry" he apologized to the enraged series of drivers, especially the one that almost hit him who had his family in the back seat and they were all looking scared because of what Anthony had just done.
There was no way he could cross this road without causing a major problem for the other drivers. He also wasn't going to get the chance to do so either because Samuel started running away with a scared look while he covered his wrist.
"Samuel?" Anthony mumbled but then the car which almost ran into him honked its horn again
"Hey maniac, get off the road!" The driver yelled at him and Anthony did as asked, stepping back for the cars to drive past.
They were all furiously glaring at him while he watched Samuel until the boy turned the corner and vanished from his sight.
"Who was that person?" Anthony questioned himself, looking at the aged man who saved Samuel.
The man was talking to someone with an apron on and the both of them were walking in the opposite direction as Samuel, meanwhile, the aged man was stuffing something into his back pants pocket.
"Should I go thank him for his help?" Anthony mumbled before looking back at the road and realizing once again that because of how busy it is, he wouldn't be able to get to the man.
Giving up, Anthony decided to return to his job but he stepped on something after taking the first step, only to look down and see that it was his phone with the screen even more cracked from stepping on it.
"F*ck," He said under his breath, picked it up, tried to see if it still worked, and even though a part of it had gone blind, the touchpad still worked, however barely.
"Now I gotta add a new phone to things I need, sh*t!" he smacked his tongue then went in to finish his shift. An hour later his shift ended and he went to his next job which was working as a poker game dealer in The Jade Casino
..("Favorite, today we'll be field testing you on one of our reserved VIP tables, and with the feedback we get, we'll have you working more jobs so make sure you don't fumble this. And remember, this arrangement you have with us is only temporary and depends on how well you do today so for your own sake, don't mess this up")
Anthony recalled what the manager of the casino had told him during his morning interview. A memory which was sparked by him merely standing in front of the poker table with empty seats meant to be sat in by the three VIPs
("Don't forget, these are very special guests so don't do anything stupid that will ruin our relationship or else there'll be consequences")
The door to this special VIP room was opened and the bodyguards of the VIPs walked in, followed by two out of the three VIPs behind them
They were some well refined-looking gentlemen and upon seeing them, the manager smiled hospitably.
"Good to have you here Sirs, as you can see everything is just as you like it," the manager said, clasping his hands and wearing a forced smile.
"And what about your guest?" He asked, noticing that the third person still hasn't come in yet
"He went to use the restroom but he'll be here any moment from now," said the VIP who sat at the right of the table from where Anthony stood.
The manager nodded his head and then called Anthony to come closer.
"Alright Sirs, we can wait but in the meantime lemme introduce you to our new dealer for today, this is Favorite Arthur and he'll be filling in for your usual dealer who unfortunately has some family issues to handle"
The two VIPs looked at Anthony skeptically and the one by the right who was clipping his cigar said "You know how uninterested I am when it comes to unexpected changes…." he frowned and the manager gulped nervously.
"But, I also understand the needs of one's family so I'll allow it just this once, but don't let it happen ever again"
"Okay Sir" the manager bowed, cleaning his nervous sweat with his pocket-handkerchief.
The other VIP by the left of Anthony had his sights fixed on Anthony and unlike the manager Anthony's face remained unchanged, unfazed and calm, staring right back at him.
The same VIP saw this and couldn't help but chuckle.
"It's been a while since I've seen a youngling with this amount of balls. Don't know how I would have felt about it in my younger days— no wait, I'm sure I would have felt disrespected but as I've gotten older all I can say is that… I like it! That's the fire that so many young men are missing these days!" the man grinned, reaching for the gold-plated box where his friend got his cigar from and got one for himself.
"Since you're replacing our usual dealer, just how skilled are you?" The VIP by the left asked Anthony, lighting his cigar, but Anthony not being allowed to speak when the manager jumped in to respond to the question.
"Very skilled sir, he's very skilled. Earlier during his interview I tested out his shuffling skills and he has extensive knowledge of how the game works, equal in every way to your usual dealer which is why I let him work your game confidently in the first place, Sir" he said and they both glared at Anthony with a glint of doubt in their eyes.
Don’t forget to leave a review as it helps boost the book so others can see it too
Since the beginning, the manager had had his head bowed ever so slightly that it looked like he had a slouch but in truth, he didn't ("Oh, one last thing. Always remember to lower your head when in the presence of these guests.") The manager told Anthony during the interview but Anthony responded with silence at the time. The manager took that as compliance but he was wrong as he has been glaring at Anthony but Anthony wasn't lowering his head to the guests. Instead, he was looking them straight in the eyes. Angry at Anthony, the manager wanted to address the topic but couldn't in their presence so he would have to remain quiet about it until they leave. However, what he didn't expect was that both VIPs didn't seem bothered about Anthony not acting overly subservient around them. They were even more accepting of him than the manager had calculated, especially from the man on the left. "So how did you get so skilled in cards kid? You also gamble a lot?" Asked the VIP on the left,
'The features, the resemblance, it's all so uncanny' Even in the intensity of the reproach, a conflicting thought lingered in Franklin's mind as he stared at Anthony. Anthony's face didn't undergo any negative changes after being accused, he remained as unfazed and stoic as ever "What are you talking about Sir, cheating in what game?" "Don't play dumb with me kid, the others may have been too distracted to notice but I had my eyes on you the entire time and I know sleight of hand when I see it. Nothing can escape these trained eyes of mine" Franklin said. "Okay sir, sounds like you're talking about a magic show you must have gone to. Sleight of hand? How does that have anything to do with me, a simple part-timer?" Anthony scrunched his eyebrows, tilting his head to the left. "Why you!" Franklin exclaimed, smacking his tongue afterward. 'Who is this kid? He couldn't be him could he?' Franklin's glare became even more intense and with that, it was evident that he wasn't going to bac
["Hello? Who is this?"] Finally, after three attempts his call was answered. "This is Anthony, Mr's Faller. I was just calling to see how Samuel was doing" he sat in the bed with his shoes off but still had his casino dealer outfit on. ["Umm, he's fine. It's already way past his bedtime so he should be in bed sleeping. Is anything the matter?"] After hearing this, Anthony second-guessed himself on if Samuel was okay or not. Anthony thought that he might just be worrying for nothing. "It's nothing, I just wanted to call since it's been a while since I last did, that's all" he smiled ["It has been a minute since you called but honestly I can't blame you, not when you and my husband have something so serious like Ama— Oh, sorry I mentioned that"] she covered her mouth. Anthony chuckled as a way to lighten the mood "You don't have to be ma, I also know how this has shaken your family so don't hold yourself on my account. I'll be just fine" he smiled ["I'm glad to hear that and you m
Chaos ran wild as many of the patients in the main entrance of The Meteor Garden hospital scattered for either their safety or as a knee-jerk response to Anthony and Franklin. Some were patients with high sensitivity like epilepsy, autism, or Tourette so the sudden act of violence was enough to trigger them. Being among the few staff there and a proactive one at that, the nurse behind the counter hurriedly grabbed the landline and put out a call. "Can we get some medics over here in the main area, right now?! We need as much help as possible with handling the patients and also to put a stop to a visitor who's gone crazy!" she yelled into the mouthpiece then slammed the landline back on itself. The nurses were able to get to the more mentally balanced patients who only fell to the floor while trying to move away from Anthony and Franklin. As for those currently going crazy, they needed more serious help from the paramedics who were able-bodied enough to appropriately handle the sit
The paramedic who had the syringe in his hand paused, jaw dropped, leaning back and filled with utter confusion. Anthony who was seeing all of this instantly got a look of disgust aimed at Franklin and what he just did. "What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you do that, take away the only thing that’s saving your life right now?!" Anthony asked while he grimaced. He pulled himself away from Franklin and then with the anger still in him but now also mixed with a state of confusion, he pushed a weakened Franklin to the ground. "Just what the hell do you want from me?!" Anthony yelled in an exasperated manner, looking down at Franklin who was holding on to his neck and trying to breathe in as much air as he possibly could. Contrary to being the one who had inflicted pain on everyone else, physically or otherwise, Anthony looked like he was in more agony than anyone else, huffing and trying to find a way to get calm. "Alright you fool, that's enough from you. Just take a look a
"You're the—" Franklin was cut short by Anthony "You're not seriously going to talk to me while you’re like that, groveling like a lost puppy, are you? It's overkill, so just stop!" he frowned. "Huh?" Franklin raised his head in surprise but seeing that Anthony was being serious, he nodded. He said, "As you wish, young master" standing up and so did Anthony. Franklin dusted his knees, carrying on "As I was saying, you Young Master are the long lost, thought to be deceased, real heir to the Midnight family fortune and I'm here to take you back home so that you can reclaim what rightfully belongs to you" Anthony tilted his head to the left, slowly "Midnight? Who and what's that supposed to be and how am I the rightful heir as you say?" He grimaced skeptically. "MIDNIGHT, that's the real name of your family lineage, young master. I know you’re confused but the truth is that you aren't a STAR— No, pardon my blunder because what I just said could have come off wrong and easily misund
("Franklin, I know this isn't much to make up for the heartaches I've caused, but if you'll accept it, let this gift grant you freedom") The unexpected question from Anthony forced a memory to pop into Franklin's head. This was a memory that from the looks on his face, he didn't understand the significance of it either. 'Why am I remembering this now?' He questioned himself before taking in a very deep breath with closed eyes and releasing it in a calm sigh. "Young Master, the truth is I have no idea why you can't read my thoughts either. The best I can do is remember a moment in my past, during my former master’s last moments, he bestowed on me a gift, with words hoping that I obtain freedom. Though I didn't understand what he meant by that at the time, my guess is that's the reason you can't access my mind. I've been freed from another's control" Anthony watched him, thinking to himself 'if what he says is true then does that mean I too can manipulate others’ minds beyond just r
Instantly, Anthony's body wanted to start vibrating as the anger he was feeling from seeing Samuel hurt had skyrocketed out of control. But, just as quickly he contained it with a deep breath and a sigh 'I guess it was a result of how hard Franklin must have grabbed his wrist when he tried to save him from being hit. A sprained wrist is a much better alternative to what could have happened if he wasn't there. Looking back now I guess I was kinda being hard on him for no reason’ Anthony thought in both acceptance and guilt. Meanwhile, an angered Mr's Faller who wasn't there when the incident happened and so didn't know what Anthony does, dragged Samuel along to where Franklin was standing to confront him. Anthony followed behind her, wanting to smooth things over as he was the only person who knew both parties and was there when the accident happened, so he felt like he knew enough to try and defend Franklin. "You should try and get calm Mr's Faller, I don't think you should be angr
