4. The Embarrassing Reality of Life

Brian immediately transferred the money to a mini market that provided money transfers. Luckily, this time he was able to immediately send him for treatment, his uncle's breath and life.

“I just sent it. Use it to pay," said Brian when calling Dion, his uncle's son.

Silence. There was no answer from the other side, there was only silence, no sound at all apart from sighs. Brian could feel something was wrong.

"What is it? Why are you silent?" Brian asked Dion to talk.

"I just paid the administration, but they said it was only enough for the opening, examination fees, post-operation and so on, it wasn't enough at all."

This time Brian was the one who fell silent when he heard Dion's words. Not enough? How can it be that expensive? Even though he thought the money he had just sent was enough, but why?

"Brother Brian, I will tell you after the operation is finished. Now I'm closing." Dion ended the call but Brian was silent and couldn't believe what his younger brother was saying.

"Not enough?" He muttered, his heart knew something was wrong but already, the connection had been lost and Dion refused to be contacted again when Brian finally realized something was wrong. "Fuck!"

That's not important now. What's more important is how does Brian make more money? He worked at three places, two part-time jobs, one main job. He works in a restaurant and his salary is enough to pay rent and his studies, but because he has a relationship with Clarissa who asks a lot of him, Brian has to work part time and with that he has three jobs and saves up to marry his girlfriend. However, all her plans are ruined when she finds out her lover is having an affair with a man who is richer than her.

There is only one job left, but Brian doesn't expect much because his salary can only cover his daily meals. His job is only to clean the sports training ground.

Brian's mind was blank now. The rain fell again on the earth, the houses and shops closed their doors tightly as the night grew darker, but Brian still continued to walk along the sidewalk, under the dim light of the street lights, thinking back to his fate in his less fortunate life.

Deciding to go home, Brian remembered that tomorrow he still had to go to campus. It's a busy time on campus. He has to fight to make his dream come true to make his uncle, a loved one who is always there for him, happy and improve his poor life. That's the goal, to get a more decent life.

The sun was starting to appear in the sky when Brian ran as fast as he could towards campus. He didn't have any money anymore so he couldn't take the bus or other public transportation and was forced to run along the street. Facing a tiring day yesterday made him sleep soundly because of exhaustion.

"Unlucky!" he cursed when time didn't seem to want to wait for him. "I'm going to be late," he complained as he continued running.

However, as soon as he arrived at the campus entrance, something stopped him in his tracks.

Someone, whether intentionally or not, splashed mud on the road, the tires of the red sports car arrogantly passed Brian and without feeling guilty just walked away after splashing almost half of the white t-shirt that Brian was wearing today.

Brian was stunned and couldn't believe what was happening. He raised his face, someone in the red car raised his middle finger through the half-open car window without revealing himself.

Road mud covered his whole body, thick enough to stick to his clothes and Brian even tried to clean it in the toilet, but in vain because it was getting worse. Brian threw his clothes into the sink, his breath wheezing, his resting hands clenched into fists, his gaze focused sharply on the mirror. Today he was unlucky again.

“You're late, Brian. I'm going to deduct points from you because you don't respect my time, and what's on your shirt? Really, you embarrassed yourself and made me worry. Sorry, rules are rules. I hope you don't repeat the same thing in the future.” Mrs. Ghiana, her lecturer, scolded her and refused to be kind enough to defend an important point that could change her life.

The embarrassing reality of life

Once again, Brian was struck by disaster. Being forced to wear those dirty and wet clothes when he came out of the toilet, invited many stares at him, and most of them looked down on him again, and again, always like that.

Because he was late for the first lesson, Brian couldn't attend the next lesson. He went to the information board, an administrator called him.

“You have to pay it immediately or you won't be able to take classes for exams and internship preparations,” said the woman at the administration desk.

“Can't it be resolved later?”

"No. It has to be done now and you're running out of time."

"How much longer?"

The woman checked the data then looked back at Brian.

"Tomorrow."

"Hah?"

“Please pay immediately or you may have to stop here.”

How could it be?

Tomorrow? How can it coincide with the due date for house rent and loan sharks? Now the campus where he studied to change his life is also giving him a burden? Brian couldn't stop thinking. He staggered across the fairly wide campus yard.

Veritas University is a famous higher education institution in the country of Morphile. A dream campus filled with elite and genius people. Brian looked at the magnificent and beautiful building with a large yard and complete facilities. Three years of studying, his dream was about to come true, but why didn't everything go according to plan?

“He really is shameless.”

"That's right. It turns out he was poor all this time."

“No wonder Clarissa is cheating on me. Who would survive with a person like him who couldn't even bring you happiness? so pathetic."

"Yeah. I definitely don't want to get involved with a guy like that."

“I heard he hit the Kang Corporation CEO's son at the hotel just because his girlfriend was there.”

“Kang Corporation? Isn't that the fifth largest company in our country? Wow. He was so brave, it was sad. His life is really shit."

"Is it true? I'm sure he'll be even more unlucky after this."

Those words, the looks that were directed at Brian, the people who were along the campus grounds, or who passed him whispered, insulted, cursed, even once again, and again and again, belittled him. Brian didn't know what happened, but he realized something was wrong.

Brian looked around, people were making fun of him, insulting him just because he was born poor. Being accepted at a prestigious campus is a matter of luck because of his good grades, but it doesn't guarantee he can graduate if he doesn't have connections and money. Brian comes from a village, a remote part of the country. It was not Brian's wish to be born poor or without parents and raised by his only uncle who is now helpless in the hospital.

“How could a poor person like him get in here? Ugh. It's disgusting to see. You smell!"

Brian's gaze turned sharply towards someone who openly insulted him. A group of students was not far in front of him. They are the children of rich people, often looking down on others just because they have everything.

“Clarissa?” Brian called the people in the children's group. Clarissa's gaze was cold, her gaze was much different from the last time Brian met her.

"Hey Clariss, you really like men like him, don't you?" asked a girl in tight clothes in a tone full of mockery.

Brian noticed Clarissa's appearance, starting from the bag, clothes, shoes, even the sunglasses on her head which were worth hundreds of millions, everything on Clarissa's body was a luxury item that Brian couldn't afford to give her. His heart hurt even more when he saw that reality.

"Of course not. I'm just playing with him. Who likes the lowly things he gives? Oh, come on. He's not attractive at all, he's stale and old-fashioned," said Clarissa in a high voice that shook Brian's heart.

The ridiculing laughter rang out like a voice guide in the open space, very annoying and arrogant.

Everything has changed, the sweet and motivating words that Clarissa used to say are now like daggers that destroy her. Brian couldn't say anything between his laughs.

"Let's go," said Clarissa, who was hugged affectionately by the man Brian recognized as the son of the hotel owner.

“Wait I thought it would be fun to put on a little show,” said one of them.

A man approached Brian, stopped two steps in front of him then took out several bills and threw them at Brian.

“For you to eat,” he said, smiling disdainfully.

The laughter rose again, becoming more mocking. Brian looked angrily at the bills under his feet. His fingers were clenched tightly, his jaw clenched, his eyes bloodshot.
