Arwin just watched carefully how the land was getting closer and closer. She had only heard rumors and some published facts about the dreaded Shadowcoast when she was a pirate, but she didn't know more than that.
But now, a dark and terrifying island looms in front of her, waiting to eat her alive.
The name came from the mountains that laid massive shadow to the never-ending coast.
Otherwise, she didn't know what to expect from the place and what she would find out from there.
"Oh right, as we have traditions here, every one of you will get one pistol and one close combat weapon when we get to the island. We will also provide you a limited amount of ammunition, but if you shoot at the airship, our guards with rifles will happily pick you up from the coast and use you as a ranged practice.” The guards smirked as he continued, “But of course, as we are in prison, we will make it more exciting to you, and everyone one of you has to draw two sets of papers containing a number that would determine the weapon you will get. So good luck with the drawing, and let's begin the lottery now."
As he finished with his announcements, two guards carrying a wooden bowl of numbers appeared from the other side. The first bowl had the close combat weapons, some had rusts and broken parts in it, and the second one had the pistols. Arwin can tell from this distance that despite the trashy weapons- some high-end weapon lies within.
Some of the prisoners got axes, scythe's, swords, and basically anything that could be used as a weapon while the pistols were ranked according to its working condition since some of them were already old and rusty while some were shining new.
Of course, some were more like blunderbuss but in a pistol version, and some were suited for long-range.
When it was finally Arwin's turn to draw, she got a small battle-axe that is similar to a hafted axe. She thought to herself, “Lucky, this just needs a little love, and we’re good to go kill people.”
"Oh, someone got a lucky draw, I see. I should have known that our princess’s luck is excellent." the prison guard flashed a smile towards Arwin, “Such a shame that a quality weapons went to such a waste like you.”
Arwin gritted her teeth as she fought the urge to use her axe and strike the guard in his head. She reminded herself that it wasn’t worth dying for. She then tried her luck with the pistol; she saw that she got an elegant pistol that probably has been owned by a noble at some point.
It wasn't a flintlock pistol that would need maintenance, just like some of what the unlucky prisoners got. What she is holding was a good modern pistol that could only fire once. That is the case because the pistol manufacturers haven't revealed how the guns work to keep their trade secrets at themselves.
It is loaded from the pipe, and the lead ball was set inside, but it does not require to be rifled nor to be charged with black powder to fire.
"Now, I think some of you wonder about the magic at Shadowcoast.
Let me enlighten you. Yes, magic doesn't normally work there, but the natives have their own special magic, which is the only magic that could operate on that island, so good luck. I won't tell you anything else, so you all discover the rest by yourselves.", the prison guard said while smiling cheekily.
They were slowly landing on the continent, and only now, Arwin realized that it was a bustling city.
"This is the Westport, and it's the local trade city within Shadowcoast. All major continents have their own branches here to buy the local stuff and whatever their agenda is on this continent. This city has laws, and you will be killed most likely if you break them; otherwise, there aren't any other marked cities that we know in this continent." The prison guard said while they were landing in the town.
Arwin never heard that there was an actual city with soldiers and merchants on the Shadowcoast and was surprised about it.
When they landed, someone shouted out, "Hey, Bill, a new batch of prisoners again? Is it that time of the month again, huh? Oh well, they came in an unfortunate time as there is probably going to be a beast tide that's going to hit the city soon."
"Sam, you know we don't care what happens to these people. We just give them weapons and pass them to this island while scaring them. Now, they can go and fend off themselves and try to survive this cursed island.", the prison guard answered.
"Bill, this island isn't that bad if you don't count the countless beasts and some of the hostile natives. We are almost done with building another city in the middle of this place. It's otherwise quite a relaxing and enjoyable place to live.", Sam answered while looking at the prisoners who came out from the airship.
"Oh well, it's not for me to live without magic, you know that Sam. My wife would kill me if we moved here. I must go now. There should be another shipment of prisoners coming in a few days.", Bill answered and waved at Sam while heading back to the other airship.
"So, you twenty lucky people, welcome to the Shadowcoast! I'm Sam, and I will be your guide for today. Of course, to those who don't want help or guidance, you can fuck off right now and stop me from wasting my time. For those who wish to know more about this place, I will offer the advice now. Let's move forward." Sam said while starting to move out.
Some of the prisoners left. They thought that they could survive without hearing any advice and guidance while some were trying to find local contacts that could benefit them in their survival in the continent. "I see. The five of you are the only lucky ones who decided to stay and listen to the poor old me. Congratulations! You will be keeping your life for a little longer!" he said with fake happiness while clapping his hands. He then continued, "As I said, I'm Sam, and now when those who wanted to leave are gone, we can start our exploration from the bottom of this city.", Sam said and started to explain the city's history from the beginning to the current day. He explained how the first people came to the continent and how there was a history of numerous massive fights for the ownership of the continent. Then he started from the natives and local fauna around them and how the kingdoms were stuck in the dilemma of choosing between the people and royalties
The truth is, most of the things that she had seen so far since she stepped foot into the island were really unexpected. Just like, when Arwin stepped inside the huge Northguards building, she saw how buzzing the place was. People were continually coming inside and leaving, and people were chatting and eating at the kitchen side. "Small fry, get out of the way." Someone suddenly said in disdain and roughly pushed Arwin to the ground. The same also happened to some other misfortunate people who weren't lucky enough to dodge. "Are you alright? You seem to be new here. I have never seen your face before.", someone said curiously and gave a hand to Arwin to help her up. Arwin took the hand and was pulled up and saw that a staff member was looking at her. "Yes, I just came to this lovely continent, and I decided to try my luck here as I need money." Arwin fought the urge to protest and honestly answered to the staff m
"I'm done now with answering the papers," Arwin announced, and Tom looked at the time. "You still have over twenty-five minutes left. Are you really sure that you are done? Are you sure you don't want to recheck the papers?" Tom asked while in his mind he was thinking. 'She's just an arrogant fool that doesn't know what the best for her is. How could she be done with the test this soon? I even gave her less time than the usual, and more questions to diligently answer. Still, she thinks she's done. "Yes, I'm done, mister supervisor. I even checked my papers and looked at the questions that I had thoroughly answered twice." Arwin honestly replied and gave the papers to Tom, who just silently snickered and took them. "If you say so. I will then check these papers through," Tom said, but he already had made his mind that he won't let Arwin pass and pretended to read the papers. After a while and after flipping through the last paper, he announced. "You fa
"Hey! hey! Don't collapse now! We will arrive soon at the infirmary, so don't collapse yet." The man said to Arwin, who was wobbling around as her headache was getting worse every second. The world was spinning around her, everything was getting blurry, and her sight betrays her. It was worse than the time she had been drunk with three barrels of ale. "Oh, shit! Wait here, don't move." The man said while realizing that Arwin's condition was getting even worse. 'Those shitheads! Finally, when I found a perfect employee and would have gotten my bonus, they had to injure her to this extent! I don't know what she did to get thrown out like that, but I hope it will benefit us at least.' The man mumbled to himself as he placed Arwin down and made sure that she was sitting correctly and was leaning against a wall for support. Then he started to run straight forward, and after a few hundred meters, he stopped and started to bang at the door hurriedly.
"Hey, is the boss here now?" Timothy asked the secretary that was working on with a stack of papers. She looked at Timothy, annoyed, and sighed before saying, "No, that man did run off again, leaving all of the paperwork to me as usual. So, I hope you are not in trouble or did something horrible again, as I absolutely do not have the time to deal with it now." The secretary said, before releasing a deep breath of exhaustion as she looked at the stack of papers that are still waiting to be done, “If you see him, do tell him to go to hell for me, okay?” "Oh, don't worry, I may actually have a new employee for us. Here would be the recommendation papers that I wanted to give to the boss," Timothy answered while looking at the secretary. "Oh, just leave them at the boss’s table like usual. He will check them out later when he comes back.” The secretary replied and continued giving such a tired smile to Timothy, “Don't worry, I will remind
"Timothy! Watch out! There is someone-“ Timothy’s boss tried to warn him, but he was too late, Timothy was already bleeding, someone hit him at the back of his head. Timothy’s boss continued making such a painful face as if he was the one who got hurt, “Oh, ouch, that must have hurt…" Timothy saw stars for a moment, and blood and wine were dripping out from his head; he was still dizzy, but he gained his composure and mocked his attackers, “What a cheap trick to hit behind my back.” “It’s tactic, you piece of sh*t.” “Yeah- a lazy one.” Timothy continued Suddenly the attacker behind Timothy grabbed him and started to choke Timothy. He said to the ape looking man in front of him, “Boss, I got him to let's teach him some manners now." The ape looking man didn't let this opportunity go and started to throw punches at Timothy simultaneously and powerful ones. Timothy couldn't do anything than receive those vicious hits to his stomach. Timot
"Don't say you got in trouble again? I can feel it. “ Marie said as Silas arrived, trying to hide from her; she continued, “No, I actually don't want to know as I still have all of these papers that you pushed at me on.” Silas laughed jokingly and said, “Don’t say that. You’re the best there is, after all.” “Timothy left you something at your table," Marie said as she rolls her eyes, then she averts her gaze, looking at her boss, tired of his behavior. "Marie, my sweet Marie, do you know how much I do love that attitude of yours? You also know I'm useless with paperwork and better at making connections and money, right?" Silas said while looking at Marie, who suddenly grabbed the closest object from her, that was an inkbottle, and threw it at her boss. "Ayay!" Silas caught it and said, "Marie, you are lucky that the ink bottle is closed and not open. “You know I'm not a masochist, but for you, I will make an exemption and let you dominate me a
Silas was so excited and was experiencing such a thrill. He was rushing his way to meet Arwin that he didn't saw the people, so he ended up bumping into lots of objects and people without caring about them and just getting up and continuing running. He says carefreely, “Sorry about that; I’m about to meet someone truly remarkable!” Everyone looked at him- all were estranged, but he didn’t care. Silas has his eyes set on meeting Arwin. Finally, when he got to the office, he barged inside, making the employees jump up for their seats, scaring some of them completely. They were remarking, “You scared the crap out of us. Why are you here?” The guards automatically threw their weapons out, but when they saw that Silas was unarmed, they placed their swords in halfway on their scabbard, ready to draw them at any time if Silas would show any signs of hostility. Silas was welcomed with protests, “Silas, what the hell was that? Do you kno
