“Argh!” Arwin groaned after someone, splashing cold water on her, suddenly woke her up. She felt intense throbbing pain in her head.
Half asleep, she slowly tried to stand up but immediately stumbled down and realized that it was because she was shackled on the wall. Arwin was chained, both her arms and feet, with a normal and rusty metal.
She protested, “What the―”
Before Arwin could see what else is wrong with her, someone suddenly hit her on the head, and the pain woke her up completely. She then finally realized that she wasn’t alone inside that reeking place.
She started to look around and saw that there were at least twenty others, shackled, in the same manner as her in the dim room. The place looked like a cave with nothing but stones and metals binding them, but why couldn’t she get out? By now, her crewmate must’ve rescued-
Her thoughts were cut off and soon turned to worries, where’s the rest of her crew? Their ship? She tried to break free from her shackles forcibly.
However, before she could even look around better or even say anything, she was slapped again, and someone said mockingly, “Wake up sleepy head! We aren’t going on a vacation! Or do you think it is a holiday for now? Wake up now, miss princess! I still wonder how a petty woman like you managed to be a Night Rose crew! Oh well! It doesn’t matter, as I won’t see you anymore once we arrived at the Shadowcoast. So stand up now! We will transport you to a steamship soon.” The prison guard shouted rudely.
Arwin growled in a fury and said, “How dare you! I’m the captain of Night Rose!”
The guard laughed at her, hysterically, “How can you be the captain? You’re a woman! Besides, we already caught the captain of Night Rose, no use in saving his ass now.”
Arwin felt a sting in her heart as she remembered her last memories of Talfen knocking her out, her voice trembled as she asks, “Who… who’s the captain?”
“You pathetic newbie!” The guard kicks her in the gut before answering, “You don’t even know your captain’s name? Is it Taflan? Taflen?”
“Talfen.” Arwin shudders
“Yeah, that big old guy.” The guard then opened some of the shackles from Arwin’s back and gestured for her to move outside.
Only now, Arwin realized that she didn’t have the coat that usually covers her neck, and her small magic device that converts her voice into a deeper tone. It was gone with her coat. She was only wearing a white undershirt, underneath; her chest was still covered with bandages. She also has brown pants on and a simple leather shoes, at least.
She was wearing something simple that could not completely hide her true gender. Because of that, even with a short hairstyle and men’s clothes, some people can easily recognize her as a woman.
She came back to her sense; Talfen removed her clothing… did they, by chance, recognize her gender? Arwin shakes her head; she worries about Talfen and the rest. They wouldn’t accept being a slave, so she could only guess that they were sent to a death sentence. She knew she had to come to their aid quickly
When Arwin finally got to the deck, she was suddenly blinded by the sun’s brightness. She started to squint her eyes while still trying to look around.
Then someone slapped her back and said, “Miss, as I said before, we aren’t on vacation here! Keep moving! You aren’t a tourist. Or, if you want to be one, any of these soldiers would be ready to kill you after they had fun using your body for pleasure. Since I have made a vow to treat every prisoner as equal, and the laws of our kingdom prevent us from touching prisoners, you are safe as long as you don’t do anything stupid and will listen to orders. So keep moving! Hop, hop, hop! Straight to that ship now! Hurry!” The prison guard shouted out and pointed towards an old steam-driven airship.
“As you see, this is the farthest we can take you using a magic-powered airship. For the rest of your journey, you have to get used with an old and rugged steamship and pray that you will land safely to the Shadowcoast.”, the prison guard added while he started to lead the prisoners toward the old airship, and only now did Arwin saw the massive landmass in the distance.
‘How did I get here? What happened to my crew and to me?’ Arwin questioned herself silently.
It did not take long for her to remember what happened and cursed out in her mind.
‘That bastard, Talfen! Why did he save my life while he sacrificed himself? I bet it is because he thinks that there was no other choice, and I have a chance to live at Shadowcoast.’ She subconsciously touched the spot where Taflen had hit her and felt the dried blood that is still on her head. ‘I will get my revenge. I promise that, and I will bury every single last of you properly.’ Arwin promised while she stepped at the airship.
She hasn’t seen a steamship since she was a little kid. At that time, her father was still alive, and she was only five years old. Steamships were still quite common before, and Arwin used to help her father repair quite a lot of them.
However, when she was around ten years old, magic researches suddenly emerged and have gotten out of hand, especially when the magic stones and its potential had been discovered. People realized that they could use them as an energy source to power machine engines that is even stronger and efficient than steam.
With that, everyone became interested, and businessmen and authorities started to provide funds to support magic researches that could further improve its capacity and to explore further what it can offer. Mages also became far more respected and significant compared to before, where they were looked down upon for being useless in the society. Today, more magic branches were built, and the world is now basically surrounded by magic. Because of this, the use of steam and science was eventually forgotten.
When Arwin saw the steam engine on the airship, she felt slightly nostalgic as she remembered how her father used to carry her on his shoulders while pointing at different parts of the airships that he was repairing.
“Miss! The earth is calling you. Wake up!” The prison guard shouted out, and Arwin finally snapped out from her memories.
"Good! You are finally awake! Now stop daydreaming and dilly-dallying! Go and take your spot from there and sit down.” The prison guard said and pointed at an empty spot on the deck of the airship.
Arwin obeyed him and went to sit down at the spot that the guard pointed at. She then started to scan her surroundings once again, mostly focusing on the other prisoners.
As her eyes trail, she saw that they were mostly male, but there were also a few females among them. Their ages varied. Arwin could guess that the youngest could probably be around fifteen years old, while the oldest looks to be around sixty. They all seemed accustomed to the way things are around here.
It is not her business, but she can’t stop but wonder what those people’s past could be. Is there anyone here who might be the same as her? In the Shadowcoast, she would need allies, as she will not be able to survive alone. Still, she doesn’t want to get an ally who would just use her, so she should be wise and keen in choosing her people.
With this in mind, she silently observed them as they do the same with her.
She was the new girl, so it was natural for them to stare and wonder what she did to end up serving in a place like that.
Arwin just watched carefully how the land was getting closer and closer. She had only heard rumors and some published facts about the dreaded Shadowcoast when she was a pirate, but she didn't know more than that. But now, a dark and terrifying island looms in front of her, waiting to eat her alive. The name came from the mountains that laid massive shadow to the never-ending coast. Otherwise, she didn't know what to expect from the place and what she would find out from there. "Oh right, as we have traditions here, every one of you will get one pistol and one close combat weapon when we get to the island. We will also provide you a limited amount of ammunition, but if you shoot at the airship, our guards with rifles will happily pick you up from the coast and use you as a ranged practice.” The guards smirked as he continued, “But of course, as we are in prison, we will make it more exciting to you, and everyone one of you has to draw two sets of paper
Some of the prisoners left. They thought that they could survive without hearing any advice and guidance while some were trying to find local contacts that could benefit them in their survival in the continent. "I see. The five of you are the only lucky ones who decided to stay and listen to the poor old me. Congratulations! You will be keeping your life for a little longer!" he said with fake happiness while clapping his hands. He then continued, "As I said, I'm Sam, and now when those who wanted to leave are gone, we can start our exploration from the bottom of this city.", Sam said and started to explain the city's history from the beginning to the current day. He explained how the first people came to the continent and how there was a history of numerous massive fights for the ownership of the continent. Then he started from the natives and local fauna around them and how the kingdoms were stuck in the dilemma of choosing between the people and royalties
The truth is, most of the things that she had seen so far since she stepped foot into the island were really unexpected. Just like, when Arwin stepped inside the huge Northguards building, she saw how buzzing the place was. People were continually coming inside and leaving, and people were chatting and eating at the kitchen side. "Small fry, get out of the way." Someone suddenly said in disdain and roughly pushed Arwin to the ground. The same also happened to some other misfortunate people who weren't lucky enough to dodge. "Are you alright? You seem to be new here. I have never seen your face before.", someone said curiously and gave a hand to Arwin to help her up. Arwin took the hand and was pulled up and saw that a staff member was looking at her. "Yes, I just came to this lovely continent, and I decided to try my luck here as I need money." Arwin fought the urge to protest and honestly answered to the staff m
"I'm done now with answering the papers," Arwin announced, and Tom looked at the time. "You still have over twenty-five minutes left. Are you really sure that you are done? Are you sure you don't want to recheck the papers?" Tom asked while in his mind he was thinking. 'She's just an arrogant fool that doesn't know what the best for her is. How could she be done with the test this soon? I even gave her less time than the usual, and more questions to diligently answer. Still, she thinks she's done. "Yes, I'm done, mister supervisor. I even checked my papers and looked at the questions that I had thoroughly answered twice." Arwin honestly replied and gave the papers to Tom, who just silently snickered and took them. "If you say so. I will then check these papers through," Tom said, but he already had made his mind that he won't let Arwin pass and pretended to read the papers. After a while and after flipping through the last paper, he announced. "You fa
"Hey! hey! Don't collapse now! We will arrive soon at the infirmary, so don't collapse yet." The man said to Arwin, who was wobbling around as her headache was getting worse every second. The world was spinning around her, everything was getting blurry, and her sight betrays her. It was worse than the time she had been drunk with three barrels of ale. "Oh, shit! Wait here, don't move." The man said while realizing that Arwin's condition was getting even worse. 'Those shitheads! Finally, when I found a perfect employee and would have gotten my bonus, they had to injure her to this extent! I don't know what she did to get thrown out like that, but I hope it will benefit us at least.' The man mumbled to himself as he placed Arwin down and made sure that she was sitting correctly and was leaning against a wall for support. Then he started to run straight forward, and after a few hundred meters, he stopped and started to bang at the door hurriedly.
"Hey, is the boss here now?" Timothy asked the secretary that was working on with a stack of papers. She looked at Timothy, annoyed, and sighed before saying, "No, that man did run off again, leaving all of the paperwork to me as usual. So, I hope you are not in trouble or did something horrible again, as I absolutely do not have the time to deal with it now." The secretary said, before releasing a deep breath of exhaustion as she looked at the stack of papers that are still waiting to be done, “If you see him, do tell him to go to hell for me, okay?” "Oh, don't worry, I may actually have a new employee for us. Here would be the recommendation papers that I wanted to give to the boss," Timothy answered while looking at the secretary. "Oh, just leave them at the boss’s table like usual. He will check them out later when he comes back.” The secretary replied and continued giving such a tired smile to Timothy, “Don't worry, I will remind
"Timothy! Watch out! There is someone-“ Timothy’s boss tried to warn him, but he was too late, Timothy was already bleeding, someone hit him at the back of his head. Timothy’s boss continued making such a painful face as if he was the one who got hurt, “Oh, ouch, that must have hurt…" Timothy saw stars for a moment, and blood and wine were dripping out from his head; he was still dizzy, but he gained his composure and mocked his attackers, “What a cheap trick to hit behind my back.” “It’s tactic, you piece of sh*t.” “Yeah- a lazy one.” Timothy continued Suddenly the attacker behind Timothy grabbed him and started to choke Timothy. He said to the ape looking man in front of him, “Boss, I got him to let's teach him some manners now." The ape looking man didn't let this opportunity go and started to throw punches at Timothy simultaneously and powerful ones. Timothy couldn't do anything than receive those vicious hits to his stomach. Timot
"Don't say you got in trouble again? I can feel it. “ Marie said as Silas arrived, trying to hide from her; she continued, “No, I actually don't want to know as I still have all of these papers that you pushed at me on.” Silas laughed jokingly and said, “Don’t say that. You’re the best there is, after all.” “Timothy left you something at your table," Marie said as she rolls her eyes, then she averts her gaze, looking at her boss, tired of his behavior. "Marie, my sweet Marie, do you know how much I do love that attitude of yours? You also know I'm useless with paperwork and better at making connections and money, right?" Silas said while looking at Marie, who suddenly grabbed the closest object from her, that was an inkbottle, and threw it at her boss. "Ayay!" Silas caught it and said, "Marie, you are lucky that the ink bottle is closed and not open. “You know I'm not a masochist, but for you, I will make an exemption and let you dominate me a
