Chapter 007 – Returning To The Construction Site

*****

“Mister, did you and the two patients brought by you all fall from a skyscraper?”

“I…” Mark couldn’t respond after hearing the question he was asked. He even failed to see the pitiful look being given to himself by the doctor. “Will… will my mother and sister be okay?”

The doctor, “_”

He couldn’t help but keep quiet for a brief moment, then he shook his head. He had been extremely curious before, but since Mark didn’t want to say anything, he couldn’t be bothered. Well, it wasn’t that he was bothered in the first place anyway.

“That’s right, however, before any treatment could be performed on the patients, Mister will need to deposit a small amount of money.”

“I…” Mark turned into a statue for a moment. “Mo… money?”

The doctor, “_”

He couldn’t help but suddenly gaze at Mark s though he were a fool. “Yes, money.” He responded again, giving Mark a gaze that asked; ‘Don’t you know that you will be paying money in the first place when you bring over a patient? Two patients in critical conditions at that?’

However, since Mark’s head was ringing hysterically right now, he failed to get the message again. ‘Money… money…’

Utterly nervous, Mark began to think hard while his bloodshot eyes welled up with tears again. ‘Where am I going to get money?’

He was scared, but still, he was slightly optimistic. “How… how much are we talking about?”

He asked the doctor, and a smile finally appeared on the doctor’s face, as though he had just heard the term he loved most in this world.

“Well, it’s not a lot of money,” His eyes brightened and then he brought out a notepad, calculating for a moment.

“Here, you will pay exactly this amount to the cashier, and once you are done, bring the receipt to me, instant surgeries will be carried out on the patient.”

“Oh…” Mark’s heart finally felt the slightest hope. He felt that the money wouldn’t be much, with the tone with which the doctor had just spoken, however, the moment Mark received the piece of paper offered to him and he checked it, he was left dumbstruck for almost one minute, then he swallowed hard and hurriedly turn his blood-shot eyes at the doctor. “This… it… it looks like there is a mis… mistake in this paper.”

“Mistake?”

The doctor frowned and then collected back the paper from Mark. He checked it over again and returned it to Mark. “There is no mistake there, mister.”

Mark, “_”

“Two… two hundred… hundred thousand dollars for… for the two?”

“Not a dime more,” The doctor nodded his head, acting as though he didn’t see Mark’s face, then he turned around.

He was about to leave when he recalled something, making him turn around again. “Make sure you are very fast about the money so that quick treatment can be carried out on the patient, as they are in a critical condition that could lead to their demise if care is not taken.”

Mark was awoken when he heard this and again, the tears that had welled up in his eyes came crashing down, turning into a dam that flowed to the floor, forming a small puddle of slightly red water.

“I will go look for the money now, but could you begin treatment on them first? I swear by my life that I will bring the money before dust today.”

The doctor went blank when he heard Mark, then he chuckled as though he had just heard the funniest thing on earth. “It isn’t done like that here. We are a business organization, so, money is what we receive first before any of our services can be rendered.”

“I… I… I…”

Mark felt his last hope dashed. He wanted to argue that shouldn’t patient’s life be saved first before any money is asked, but he knew that it would be the worst thing he could say.

“What sort of life is this? How… how could life end up becoming like this for me? How?!”

Mark groaned like a greatly injured and devastated beast, his voice heart clenching, however, he was shouted upon by the nurse passing by him to keep his voice down, as he was in the hospital premises.

Mark did as told, but he wouldn’t stop breathing heavily and sniffing hard, trying to keep his cool.

“Money… money…”

Again, Mark wanted to cry, but he bit his teeth and blood soon began to gush out of it.

He couldn’t help recalling how he had always worked hard like a machine, only for him to give all the money, the same money that could cause his only family members on earth to lose their lives to an ungrateful and evil woman and her mother.

Spending no money for his mother and sister and keeping not even a single dime for himself.

Mark hated and despised himself so much, making the hatred he had for himself soon become more than the one he had for Rebecca and the people who put him in this condition.

He sobbed internally, bleeding hysterically in his mind and raining all sorts of curses on his unfortunate self.

Just as Mark lost all hope, something crossed his mind. “Isn’t the site supervisor still owing me $2000? That… that should be enough as a deposit, right?”

Thinking this, the final flick of hope that had died within Mark was ignited again, and then without wasting another moment, he ran.

Poor Mark, although the constant pain he was going through at every passing second was something that would have made many people lose consciousness or even lose their lives, he didn’t even notice anymore.

He was still able to run even more than many people despite most of the bones in his body being dislocated.

Well, this wasn’t because Mark’s willpower was very strong, no, it was due to the invisible ball of light that had shot into him while he lost consciousness in police custody that day.

Although the entity had already gone slumber, it was still keeping Mark intact.

……..

Thanks to the good Samaritan he met on the way, who pitied him and gave him a lift, Mark finally got to the construction site after almost an hour.

The construction site was a massive chunk of land, which was having tall skyscrapers being built on it.

It was a place where constant accidents had always occurred and where the loss of life was not even new again.

This was the place where Mark had toiled away his life in the last month, working from dawn to dust.

Mark didn’t even have the time to have a nostalgic feeling upon entering the site.

He rushed to the part of the site where he had been assigned to work when he was still there, and as soon as Mark got there, his former colleagues, who were middle-aged and elderly men saw him

They were shocked.

“Little Mark, is that you?”

They all looked at Mark with disbelief, trying to believe that this Mark was the able, strong, and filled with life and vitality Mark they once knew in the past.

Without thinking, the group of elderly and middle-aged men left their work and rushed at Mark, their faces filled to the brim with pity, shock, and concern.

“Mark, what happened to you?”

“Were you involved in a car crash?”

“Did you fall from a crane?”

“What happened to you, little Mark?”

“Was this why you hadn’t returned for more than a week?”

“I knew it! Little Mark is too hardworking to not return to his job again. And that wicked Supervisor had concluded that it was due to little brother not needing his job again?”

Looking at Mark, whose body was marred in all sizes of wounds, ranging from small to ghastly sizes and his dress already dyed with his blood, the group of workers, who were oozing out beads of sweat due to tiredness threw nonstop questions at him.

Seeing the way they all dropped their work to meet Mark, it was obvious that Mark had a good relationship with them, well, that’s right.

To all these people, Mark was more than a colleague, he was like a child to them due to how he usually behaved around them.

There are many cases where Mark had told the group of men to leave their work, doing it for them after finishing his part whenever he sees that they’ve become completely sapped of strength, and now, it was this person that turned out like this.

“Where is the supervisor?”

Not having the time or space for an explanation right now, Make asked hurriedly, gazing pleadingly at everybody.

“We…”

“You bunch of bastards, what the heck are you all doing there, leaving behind your jobs?”

As soon as this roar sounded, the heart of everybody trembled hysterically and their faces became etched with fear. Without another moment of thought, they all rushed back to their work.

“As old as you all are, how could you all be this foolish? And at the end of the day, you will want to receive payments from me?”

Mark’s heart skipped, hearing this voice. It belongs to the evil supervisor.

Mark began to make plans for an explanation in his heart, to give the supervisor, however, everything disappeared the following moment when the supervisor spotted him and a wide grin appeared on his face.

“Mark, you are here. That’s great. I’ve finally known your value now. All those groups of fools are just too weak and couldn’t get anything done, always dragging work that should have taken a little time to complete.”

Mark felt greatly relieved. ‘He should be able to borrow me extra money, added to the money he owes me, right?’ he thought.
