Just as Sarah had reminded Marcus, the date for Victoria’s father, Richard had arrived. The courthouse steps were crowded with reporters, their cameras flashing like strobe lights as Marcus made his way inside. He kept his expression neutral, ignoring their shouted questions about Victoria's latest interview – the one where she'd tearfully described him as a "manipulative man who would do anything for power.". They also shot questions at him, asking him of his involvement in the case as a potential witness. He didn’t answer any of them but he made a point to clear all that later.

Inside the courtroom, Richard Wong sat at the defendant's table, somehow managing to look both dignified and victimized in his perfectly tailored suit. Their eyes met briefly, and Marcus saw nothing but cold contempt in the older man's gaze. Good. Let him be angry. Angry people made mistakes. Marcus sat in the pews as one of the audience. He turned his head only to be met with Victoria and Eleanor glaring at

Marcus adjusted his tie for the third time as he waited outside the courtroom. Being called as a character witness for James felt wrong on every level, but his lawyers had insisted it was necessary – something about being subpoenaed or forced if he didn’t agree to what the defense wanted. Still, defending the man who had helped enable the Wongs' corruption left a bitter taste in his mouth."The defense calls Marcus Chen to the stand," James' lawyer announced. As Marcus walked to the witness box, he caught James' eye. The man looked smaller somehow, his usually impeccable suit hanging slightly loose on his frame after weeks in custody. Despite everything, Marcus felt a twinge of pity. James had always been more of a follower than a mastermind. A bad friend but still. "Mr. Chen, how long have you known the defendant, James Parker?""Approximately seven years," Marcus answered, keeping his voice neutral. "We worked together at Wong Enterprises and he was my best friend.”"And during tha

“This is everything I found," Lori said, spreading files across Marcus' desk in his study with practiced efficiency. "Ray Alvarez, forty-two years old. Stage four lung cancer. His treatment costs are being covered by an offshore account that I traced back to a shell company owned by – guess who?"Marcus leaned forward, examining the documents, his ear perking up at what Lori was telling him."Victoria.""Exactly. But, the payments aren’t going through like they normally did. Anyway, he's got a daughter in college, massive medical debt despite Victoria's contributions, and..." Lori pulled out another document, "three previous arrests for violent crimes, all mysteriously dropped after intervention from high-priced lawyers he shouldn't have been able to afford."Marcus absorbed the information, already formulating his plan."And you're sure about the cancer diagnosis?""Terminal. His latest scans show the cancer has spread to his liver. Doctors give him two months, tops." Lori's voice so

The police station was nearly empty when Marcus and his men escorted Ray through the back entrance. It was the end of the day and some of the officers had headed back to their homes but there were a few who lounged about, trying to finish their workload before calling it a day. Detective Zhang was one of them. He had waited for them, his face grim as Marcus walked into the station with Ray in tow."How exactly did you find him?" Zhang asked Marcus, his voice stern and on the verge of beration."Like I said on the phone, I have my ways. I'm not tied back by the law like you are." Marcus loosely explained, causing Zhang to frown."I know I'll regret this later but before anything we need his statement first. We'll come back to this later." Zhang caved in, wanting to get what he needed first before he asked Marcus how the hell he had tracked down an assassin and convinced him to confess to the police all of a sudden."Let's go." Zhang said as he grabbed Ray by the arm and led them straig

Marcus and Zhang managed to copy the recording on several devices before Zhang went away for the day with his own copy. With the recordings now divided and safe, Marcus was ready to find some other ways to bring Victoria down and as he sat in his bedroom, nursing a glass of bourbon, he came up with something he didn’t believe he didn’t think of before. The damn video footage from the police station. They had checked it earlier and noticed that it was corrupted but there was one thing that Marcus forgot. He had a genius hacker working for him and he was sure that she would be able to revive the lost footage somehow. Unfortunately, it slipped his mind at the moment and he couldn’t help but berate himself in his bed. He dropped his glass and picked up his phone from his night stand, sending a text to Zhang as quickly as he could telling the man that he would be at the station first thing the next day to speak about something important. Obviously Zhang didn’t reply since it was three in

The station was bustling with its usual morning activity when Marcus and Zhang walked in. Officers were milling about, some heading out for patrol while others worked at their desks. Zhang's face was set in stone as he scanned the room, quickly locating Landon at his desk, casually sipping coffee while reviewing case files with a focused look. "Officer Clay," Zhang called out, his voice carrying across the room. "Arrest officer Landon Keller."Officer CLay, a veteran cop who had worked with Zhang for years, looked confused but moved toward Landon immediately, not sure why but willing to do what his superior asked of him. The trust in Zhang's judgment was absolute.“Is this some kind of joke?” Landon asked with a chuckle causing the other officers to laugh. “You didn’t tell me that you liked that kind of stuff, detective.” He ended with a smirk, oblivious to the severity of the situation. “Cuff him, Clay.” Zhang said, not following up on the try at a joke. Clay paused for a second b

Victoria Wong adjusted her Hermès silk blouse, checking her reflection one final time before starting her Instagram live stream. Her office at Wong Enterprises, her other company, was the perfect backdrop – floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, modern art pieces worth millions adorning the walls, fresh flowers arranged just so on her desk. Luckily enough for her, Marcus hadn’t taken that company from her. Hence, how she managed to still conduct some business even though Wong Enterprises was little compared to Wong Facilities."Hello darlings," she purred into the camera, watching the viewer count climb. "I know there have been some... unfortunate rumors circulating lately. I wanted to address them personally."She glanced at the comments flooding in, a slight smirk playing at her lips."Yes, there have been some legal complications and my false arrest of course. But I assure you, everything will be settled soon. Wong Enterprises remains stronger than ever." She leaned closer

The fluorescent lights in the interrogation room cast harsh shadows across Victoria's face, stripping away the carefully crafted glamour she usually wore like armor. Her Hermès blouse, now wrinkled from hours in custody, seemed harshly out of place against the stark metal table.Zhang placed a thick folder on the table with deliberate slowness. "Let's start with Ray Alvarez." He began, shooting daggers at her. "I have nothing to say about that unfortunate incident," Victoria replied, her voice steady despite her circumstances. "As I've stated publicly and vehemently, his death was a tragic accident."Marcus stepped out of the corner of the room, a cold smile playing at his lips. "Show her, Detective."Zhang pulled out a series of photographs, laying them methodically before her. Security camera stills showing Landon Keller entering Ray's office. Bank statements documented transfers from shell companies. Text messages between Victoria and Keller flickered on a tablet screen. Almost

Marcus's penthouse apartment glowed warmly against the darkening city skyline. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the twinkling lights below, so different from the harsh fluorescents of the courthouse and police station where he'd spent most of his days while he was trying to put his enemies behind bars. The dining room table was set with fine china and crystal glasses that caught and scattered the light from the modern chandelier above. Next to him sat his trusted friends and business associates. "To justice," Marcus raised his glass of wine, looking around at the intimate gathering of friends who had become something like family during the long battle against Victoria Wong and her cohorts. Detective Zhang, Sarah Martinez, Derek Zhao, and Lori all lifted their glasses in response, the echo of the glass filling their ears as they clinked them together."I still can't believe it's really over," Lori said, shaking her head with a smile. She'd been Marcus' assis

He stood up as he used his hand to somewhat arrange his bed hair. It wasn't a work day so he went through the motions of most of his mornings by having a bath, brushing his mouth and putting on some clothes within the time frame of an hour and thirty minutes. Once he was done he was able to go through his phone. He sat on his bed and turned on his phone. To his surprise he go a text message from his grandfather.Meet me at The Opal restaurant in Soho by 1:00pm for lunch. We need to talk about last night. Marcus sighed but got up from the bed. The party had lasted longer than Marcus had hoped and people still walked around the room unwilling to go back to their homes. He could still see his father, uncle and grandfather mingling with various guests, each of them still with their game face on. Marcus wondered how they got the stamina to be on their feet for about five hours straight. He was already tired as he stood alone at a column in the room overlooking the rest of the guests. Rachel had left some time ago. Actually, she left immediately she turned away from him and that was the one thing that Marcus didn't want to dwell on. He had had enough of the marriage talk especially when it was with another entitled rich woman. Marcus sighed and stopped leaning on the column. He had had enough of the party. They could all stay down here but he was done with the event in general. He began to walk away, out of the hall and towards the stairs in the lobby when he felt a hand on his arm. He turned around to see his father, Micah."

He had been expecting to be woken up that early like the day before especially when the week had ended. “It's the weekend, Eric, why are you waking me up so early?” Marcus asked as he yawned and stretched in bed. Eric chuckled as he pulled the blinds away, letting the light flood into the room. “You of all people should know that you must not be the heir in words only. You have to at least have basic knowledge of your father’s business if you are to inherit it all from him. I know that you already know how to run a company but what your father owns is far bigger than that, so we need to teach you some important things if only you’re willing to learn. Knowledge is power after all.” Eric replied, standing to the side. “Can’t we start later?” Marcus asked, groaning. Why was this necessary? “You need to get used to waking early even here, Marcus. Eric and Marcus' secretary Lori, who he had flown out to meet up with him, stood beside them as Marcus and Micah stood side by side smiling at the crowd. Marcus couldn't help but notice how similar their postures were – both straight-backed and commanding, though his father carried decades more experience in his bearing. The trio now sat in the living room with all eyes on Marcus. It was unnerving being in such a foreign place and having all this information forced down his throat but when Micah led him to the living room and asked him to tell them how he survived on his own for years, Marcus didn’t think to hesitate.“Long story short, I grew up at an orphanage. No family wanted me so by the age of eighteen I was thrown out to fend for myself. Luckily for me, I managed to get a scholarship to go to college since the orphanage helped us through highschool and all that. It was mostly due to funding from some NGO but it helped.
