"I don't agree to this!" Nicholas shouted.
He had heard just about enough. It gave him no thrill to see members of the Goldstein family selling his wife off.
As far as Nicholas was concerned, they were putting Kimberly up for sale. He cannot accept that.
Everyone stared at him, shocked at his sudden outburst. Then they all burst into laughter.
It was unthinkable of Nicholas to chip in on the family's conversation. His opinion didn't count.
The conference hall echoed with more and more laughter.
"You don't agree?" Jean mocked him. "Just who do you think you are?"
Nicholas balled his hands in fist. "I don't agree to the Goldstein household's decision. My wife cannot marry George."
Kimberly stiffened and gaped at Nicholas as he said those words. Why did he say that? What was he up to?
"Shut up and seat down," lady Carla blasted at him. "Foolish man, must you disgrace me everywhere you go?"
"Who allowed this pauper here in the first place?" Sir Harold demanded, turning to Kimberly. "Control your trashy husband, Kimberly!"
Kimberly was afraid for Nicholas and herself. "Nic, seat down and keep your mouth shut. This doesn't concern you."
Nicholas turned to her. "But this isn't what you wanted. They're literally selling you out. You're my wife, not an object."
This brought another roar of laughter. It was comic seeing Nicholas standing there confidently in his shabby clothes.
No one was taking him serious.
Tiana scoffed. "You have no qualifications to speak in our family meeting. Who do you think you are?"
"He's the garbage husband Kimberly took the trouble to marry," Mariam laughed. "Go wash the toilet, spineless fool."
Nicholas took a deep breath. He had bore more than enough insults from the Goldstein family.
If only they knew whom he truly was—His true identity.
Nicholas was an heir to the Phoenix family. The Phoenix family was one the wealthiest and most prestigious family in the world.
The Phoenixs net worth amounted to over five hundred Billion dollars, but they kept an extremely low profile.
No one knew what they looked liked because they never allowed a close up interaction with people outside their circle.
The Goldstein household had no idea the trashy son-in-law was an heir to this family because he kept it a secret especially from his wife.
If anyone knew his true identity, his life would be in danger.
Knowing how wealthy the Phoenix family were, twenty million dollars was chicken feed to them.
Ever since he learnt about the financial situation the Goldstein family were facing, Nicholas couldn't sleep nor rest.
Kimberly despite not loving him, was the only person whom was kind to him.
She even demanded he gets a million dollars from the Goldstein's wealth.
He wants to help her. He was willing to beg his family for twenty million dollars.
But demanding such a price was risky.
His life would be in danger again but he was ready to risk everything. Kimberly must not marry that fat pig.
Facing the Goldstein household, he shouted, "If you give me a chance, I can offer the family twenty million dollars."
His boldness surprised everyone. He was never this bold. There was a new look in his eyes they have never seen before.
Suddenly, everyone burst out laughing again.
"What a clown," Flora wrinkled her nose at Nicholas
"Where in heavens name would a pauper like you find twenty million dollars?" Jean asked, wiping imaginary tears off his eyes.
"Nicholas," master Damian laughed heartily. "Until you die, a loser like you can never raise twenty million dollars."
"I will raise it," Nicholas insisted. "Just give me a chance to prove myself."
Lady Carla shrieked in annoyance, "That's enough, you good for nothing. Stop disgracing me. Shut up and seat down."
Nicholas didn't seat down. They may mock him and call him names however they want but he wasn't giving up.
He didn't want Kimberly to be sold off to George. He was ready to sacrifice for her sake.
Sir Harold became angry at Nicholas relentlessness.
"You're being extremely bold for a loser like yourself. Why do you disagree to our decision?"
"Because it seems as if Kimberly is being sold to save the family," he answered. "And I don't want that to happen. Besides, I'm her husband."
"You're her husband?" Lord Damian chuckled. "That's a laugh. Your marriage isn't consummated yet. She isn't yours!"
Nicholas glanced at his wife. The disappointment on her face told him he had gone too far.
But he had other strategy. "Sir Harold, what if I'm able to raise the money? Kimberly wouldn't be able to marry George, right?"
"Of course," Sir Harold jeered. "But don't waste your time trying. Not even I can raise twenty million dollars talk less of a loser like you."
"I will do it," Nicholas announced. "Give me fourteen days. I'll be able to raise the money."
"That's enough," Jean interrupted harshly. "I've heard more than enough crabby talk from this garbage boy."
Everyone listened as Jean stood up to address Nicholas.
"You're not permitted to speak in the first place but since you've chosen to be a clown, I'll make things clear to you."
Jean continued, "We need the money immediately. We aren't going to gamble our family business under those false talks of yours."
"But—"
Smack! Jean slapped Nicholas on his cheeks. The slap echoed in the quiet room.
"Shut up, you trash. Let me finish," Jean bawled at his face. "You must accept reality. Kimberly is marrying George and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it."
Nicholas fists were shaking in anger. He would remember that slap. He would never forget that slap.
However, it was no use. They wouldn't even give him a chance.
But Jean was right about one thing. He was simply gambling with his life to ask for such an amount from his family.
The Phoenix family might not give him the money afterall. He was playing with fire here.
Facing Jean, he boldly asked, "But what if I successfully raise twenty million dollars?"
Jean raised an eyebrow. "Huh? What did you say?"
"What if I'm able to raise the money and stop her from getting married?"
Jean laughed, "You're surprisingly bold today. Well, I'm in for a little challenge. If you do all these you've said, I shall bow and kiss your feet."
"Jean," Sir Harold called. "Why are you bothering yourself with him?"
"I want to crush him," Jean replied, returning back to Nicholas. "But if you fail, you shall bow and kiss my feet and wash my toilet for a month."
Nicholas was quiet. He didn't know if he should accept this challenge or not.
Jean grinned broadly. "You're awfully quiet, lowly dog. Where was all that spirit, huh?"
Nicholas bite his lips. If he accepted Jean's challenge and winded up failing, it would a bigger disaster.
Lady Carla stood up sharply, "Listen Jean, my daughter and I have no hands in this silly challenge between you and Nicholas. Don't involve us."
"I accept your challenge," Nicholas said out loud instead. "I will provide twenty million and disgrace you, Jean."
Kimberly teared up and shouted at Nicholas with her fists raised, "Shut up, Nic! Shut the hell up and leave!"
Kimberly teared up. Why does she have to be so unfortunate. Why?Ever since she got married to this loser her grandmother picked for her, her life has been nothing but misery. He was nothing. A garbage for a husband. A disgrace that never should have happened. He wasn't supposed to voice his opinion on matters as urgent as this and yet here he was disgracing her and her parents. She wished Nicholas could just keep quiet and accept reality but he was surprisingly stubborn. Why was he so adamant when there was little to nothing he could do to stop her from marrying George. George was the saviour of her family. Without the Blackwells help, the Goldstein family would crumble. There was no reason for Nicholas to act up. Actually, there's nothing he could do to change that. She couldn't take it anymore and decided to shut him up herself. That way, he would leave the family meeting and allow her to do things her way. She was trapped and she knew it. There was no other person in the f
Three years ago, Lord Fitzpatrick Phoenix, head of the Phoenix family was poisoned at a gala event. He was admitted into a foreign hospital and was unconscious for days. The gala event was hosted by no other person but his favorite grandson, Nicholas. Nicholas had no idea about the poison but since he was the host of the gala, all accusing fingers fell on him. He was falsely accused by his family for poisoning Lord Fitzpatrick. A family trial was held to settle this issue. Due to their reputation, the Phoenix family chose not to involve the media nor the police.Since Lord Fitzpatrick wasn't dead but unconscious, it was easier to resolve things without the outside world knowing. Nicholas was brought up before his family to defend himself over the allegations charged at him. "I didn't do it," Nicholas defended himself. "You all know me. I can never poison my grandfather. I love and respect him to do such evil to him.""Shut up!" Nicholas uncle, Alfred snapped. "You're the host
Nicholas wasn't entirely convinced everything Edgar told him was the truth. He was determined to find out for himself. It wouldn't be funny if he returns back home and this whole thing winds up being a prank. It could mean his death. As an outsider, returning home from exile without a formal announcement, is a taboo. The punishment is certain death. Although he trusted Edgar because Edgar wasn't the type to make jokes. To make fun of Lord Fitzpatrick name is punishable by death. Edgar wouldn't take that risk over a prank or joke. However, to be on the safe side, if he must return back to his family, he must first be sure to confirm. That night, while everyone was fast asleep, Nicholas sneaked out into the cold night and placed a call to Edgar. Edgar answered the call as if he had been waiting by the telephone all these while. "Hello, Edgar," Nicholas said, his voice heavy with exhaustion."My lord, please, please tell me where you are," Edgar begged on the other end of the li
The grand hall of the Phoenix family estate was filled with people, all waiting with baited breath for the arrival of the exiled grandson. Finally, the doors at the far end of the room swung open and the crowd erupted into cheers and applause as Nicholas strode confidently into the room.He was tall and mysterious, with an air of authority that overwhelmed everyone present. He wore a diamond encrusted face mask which only had two openings revealing his piercing blue eyes. His dark hair was styled in a sleek, modern cut, and he wore a tailored suit that showed off his broad shoulders and athletic build. As he made his way through the crowd, people reached out to touch him, as if to confirm that he was real. He was Lord Fitzpatrick favorite grandson, returned from exile after three years of being away from his family and his home. The family conference meeting was held in the grand dining hall of the family's estate. The tables and chairs had been pushed to the sides of the room,
Kimberly turned to him. "Where have you been, Nic? We've been looking for you all day."Nicholas hated to see no remorse nor guilt written on her face. She seemed relaxed and at ease. He demanded. "What is he doing here?"George chuckled, a smarmy grin spreading across his face. "Ah, if it isn't Nicholas, the trashy son-in-law. I'm glad you could join us. I was just showering your wife with gifts, as any man should do for the woman he loves."Nicholas eyes narrowed. "You stay away from my wife," he growled.Kimberly stood up, her hands shaking. "Nic, I have something to tell you. I've filed for a divorce."Nicholas froze. He had only been gone for two days and now she's already filed for divorce?Kimberly continued. "George has offered to compensate you with a million dollars."Nicholas heart broke at Kimberly's words. He knew she had been driven to this point, because of her family's decision. They must've treated her so poorly that she felt she had no other choice but to leave h
"You've ruined us," Lady Carla shrieked, beating Nicholas with her fists. "You will be the end of us."She was being restrained by Master Damian while Nicholas tried to get away from her. Somehow, Lady Carla and Master Damian had managed to curb the situation by soothing George's anger. George had returned back into the house and was now seated beside Kimberly once again. Kimberly did her best to keep him in a good mood by teasing him and cracking jokes. It worked and George was once again returned to being the ugly jolly fellow he was ten minutes ago before the storm. Inorder to punish Nicholas, Lady Carla kicked him out of the villa into the freezing cold outside the backyard. "You will remain outside until morning, you piece of trash," she yelled and slammed the door, locking it from inside. Nicholas stood to his feet and dusted his shabby clothes. He walked around the villa to the front door where he peeked through the window. In the cozy living room, he saw his wife and
"I will go, Father," Nicholas said confidently. "I have always been eager to prove myself and serve the family."The conference hall was quiet for sometime. Then everyone burst into uncontrollable laughter. Nicholas didn't falter. He stood tall and less bothered. "Will you keep quiet?" Jean shouted at him, wiping an imaginary tears off his eyes. "Just who do you think you are?""You piece of trash," Tiana mocked. "Seat down or go wash the toilets. No one gave you permission to speak."Lady Carla was seething in rage. She yelled at Nicholas. "You're nothing but a bunch of embarrassment to me and my family. Shut the hell up and seat down."But Nicholas didn't seat down neither did his eyes left Sir Harold's face. Sir Harold had always hated Nicholas but he was surprised at his sudden boldness and a little impressed. None of his children and grandchildren were ever this bold to even try. They were afraid of the Phoenix family. And why shouldn't they? In the eyes of the Phoenixes, t
The Phoenix estate was off the borders of North Hills city. There were ten thriving cities in the country with North Hills being the smallest city in all. Liberty state is the fourth biggest city and lies south, off North Hills. Liberty State fell under the rule of the Phoenix family. They bought the city from the government thirty years ago and had developed it into a luxury paradise. They run their city like a business and it's ran by one man—the Lord of the Phoenix family. Foreigners often end up comparing Liberty state to Dubai after a visit. The Phoenix estate was off the coast of Liberty state on a small island called Star island. Floyd and Jean rode in five rented motorboats which took them all the way to the shores of the island. The two men, dressed in tuxedos and loaded with expensive gifts approached the golden gates of the Phoenix estate. They came along with twenty men, each carrying big gifts for the new Lord.As they approached the gates, they met two giganti

The grand doors of the throne room swung open with a resounding creak, drawing the attention of all who were gathered inside. The courtiers, advisers, and members of the phoenix family turned their heads towards the entrance, anticipation evident in their eyes. The room was filled with an air of both tension and hope, for this was the day when King Nicholas would make his return home. Nicholas, adorned in regal attire, stepped into the room with measured grace. Every eye was fixed upon him, their gazes filled with a mix of reverence and relief. His recovery from the treacherous poison that had nearly claimed his life had been nothing short of miraculous. He had defied all odds and emerged triumphant from the clutches of death, earning the unwavering loyalty and respect of his subjects. The king was dressed in a flowing royal blue velvet robe, intricately embroidered with golden thread that glinted in the light. A golden crown adorned his head, gleaming with precious gemstones,
As Nicholas lay unconscious at the base of the well, his mind engulfed in darkness, a faint voice called out to him. "Your highness. Your highness, wake up." The voice was familiar, like a distant echo penetrating his subconscious.Slowly, the sound seeped into Nicholas's unconscious state, stirring him from his slumber. His body felt heavy and his mind foggy, but the urgency in the voice compelled him to respond. With great effort, Nicholas opened his eyes, only to find himself surrounded by the cold, stone walls of a well. Confusion washed over him as he tried to piece together his fragmented memories. And then, like a beacon cutting through the darkness, he saw Julia's face. Her eyes were filled with tears, her expression a mix of relief and anguish."Julia?" Nicholas muttered, his voice hoarse and weak. "What... what's happening?"Tears dripped from Julia's eyes, falling softly onto Nicholas's face as she held him in her arms. "My lord, we found you. You're safe now," she whisp
After Nicholas had been thrown into the well, Rose ordered her men to close the opening, sealing him inside. The heavy stone slab slid into place, shutting off any glimmer of light from the outside world.Satisfied with her sinister act, Rose ascended the stairs, leaving the chamber behind.Returning to the upper floors of the castle, Rose made her way to a vantage point that overlooked the vast expanse of the sea. As she gazed into the distance, her thoughts swirled with a mixture of anticipation and a hint of trepidation.A wry smile curled on Rose's lips as she imagined Julia and her relentless pursuit. She knew the Phoenix family would be on her trail, to rescue Nicholas. But Rose was prepared. Even if they came with an army, she was unyielding and unafraid. In her mind, she played out various scenarios, envisioning the forces that could be marshaled against her.She reveled in the prospect of a battle, relishing the challenge that awaited. Rose was a woman consumed by her thi
Nicholas's mind raced with thoughts of escape with each steps he took. The air in the narrow tunnel was stale, suffocating, and the sound of their footsteps echoed ominously. It seemed like a desperate race against time.As they ventured deeper into the tunnel, they stumbled upon an unexpected sight. The passage suddenly widened, revealing a hidden opening that led to the vast expanse of the sea. Moonlight spilled through the opening, casting an ethereal glow on the churning waves below.Nicholas's heart skipped a beat at the sight. A motor boat, small yet sturdy, bobbed gently in the water, its engine idling. Rose's voice cut through the air, filled with sinister delight. "Oh, how touching. A family reunion at the precipice of doom. Nicholas, my dear, you get on board. Yumi and William will be staying behind."Nicholas turned to face Rose, his eyes burning with anger. "No, Rose! They have nothing to do with this. Let them go. It's me you want, isn't it?"Rose sneered, her grip t
A thick silence fell between Nicholas and William. Nicholas could sense his father grappling with the weight of this revelation. "You believe your mother is alive? How come? She couldn't have survived that Poison all these years."Just as Nicholas was about to speak, the door swung open, and Yumi emerged, her hands raised in surrender. A look of panic flashed across her face, mirrored by Nicholas and William's shocked expressions. Before anyone could react, Mariam stepped out from the shadows, holding her rifle with a steady hand, her eyes filled with determination. "Nobody move, or else I'll shoot!" she declared with a mix of desperation and resolve.Nicholas's voice quivered with confusion as he asked, "Mariam, what's the meaning of this? Why are you doing this?"As if on cue, another figure emerged from the darkness, accompanied by three imposing men. The shock reverberated through Nicholas and William as they recognized the figure leading the group – it was Rose, Nicholas's mo
Seated at the dining table, Nicholas, Yumi, and Mariam enjoyed a cup of freshly brewed coffee, its aroma filling the air with warmth and comfort. The atmosphere had transformed from initial tension to a sense of collaboration and shared purpose.Yumi, with a warm smile, introduced Nicholas to Mariam. "Mariam, may I present to you Nicholas, the King of The United Republic of Niklauria."Mariam bowed slightly, a mix of respect and curiosity evident in her expression. "Your Majesty, I have heard a great deal about you and have seen you on television. It's an honor to finally meet you in person."Nicholas returned the gesture with a nod, acknowledging her words. "The pleasure is mine, Mariam. I have come here in search of answers and a possible cure. I was poisoned by the viper's veil, and Mrs. Abigail offered to create an antidote for me."Mariam's eyes glistened with a mix of nostalgia and sadness. "My mother-in-law told me about your visit and your request, Your Majesty. She believed
Coughing and wheezing amidst the swirling dust and rumbling aftermath of the explosion, Nicholas and Yumi struggled to regain their composure.Nicholas, wiping away the dirt from his face, turned to Yumi. "What in the world just happened? Who could have done this?"Yumi coughed and replied, her voice hoarse. "Could it be... Mrs. Abigail's killer?"Nicholas nodded, his expression determined. "It's a possibility. Someone must have gotten to Hans, overpowered him, and orchestrated this explosion to seal us inside."Realizing the gravity of their situation as the dust gradually cleared, they surveyed their surroundings and discovered that they were indeed trapped within the secret chamber.Nicholas remained composed and calm. "We cannot afford to panic, Yumi. We need to find a way out of here."Yumi's eyes widened in concern. "But how? We're surrounded by collapsed walls. There's no visible exit."Nicholas's voice carried a note of reassurance. "There must be another way, a hidden passage
Fear gripped Hans's face as he stared at the gun pointed directly at him. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, his heart raced uncontrollably, and his trembling hands betrayed his intense unease. The shadowy figure emerged further, revealing the person behind the weapon.Hans's shock only deepened as he found himself looking directly into the eyes of Rose. Her gaze was hardened, and she appeared like a fugitive on the run. His lips quivered as he called out her name, barely able to believe what he was seeing. "Rose... you're alive?"With the gun still trained on him, Rose responded with a cold, unwavering voice. "Yes, Hans. I survived, thanks to Nicholas's foolishness. He thought a small dose of poison would slowly end my life."Hans was trembling. "How... how did you manage to survive? After taking that poison, I thought..."Rose gaze hardened as she interrupted him. "I returned to Mrs. Abigail, who concocted a cure for me. From that moment on, I started planning my revenge ag
