Kimberly teared up. Why does she have to be so unfortunate.
Why?
Ever since she got married to this loser her grandmother picked for her, her life has been nothing but misery.
He was nothing. A garbage for a husband. A disgrace that never should have happened.
He wasn't supposed to voice his opinion on matters as urgent as this and yet here he was disgracing her and her parents.
She wished Nicholas could just keep quiet and accept reality but he was surprisingly stubborn.
Why was he so adamant when there was little to nothing he could do to stop her from marrying George.
George was the saviour of her family. Without the Blackwells help, the Goldstein family would crumble.
There was no reason for Nicholas to act up. Actually, there's nothing he could do to change that.
She couldn't take it anymore and decided to shut him up herself. That way, he would leave the family meeting and allow her to do things her way.
She was trapped and she knew it. There was no other person in the family who would marry George aside her.
Mom was right when she said this might be a set-up by her family to get rid of her. Her intuition was correct but what was the use?
She had no other choice but to do it. No one would save her. She can't be saved. Not even her mother can do anything.
What's more irritating was the fact that she was married to a coward whom her family view as a clown.
Maybe it was for the best. In as much as she hates being George's wife, she would finally be rid of Nicholas.
But to honour Madam Elizabeth's death wish, she was prepared to demand a million dollars to be paid into Nicholas account.
With a million dollars, Nicholas can finally protect himself. He could start afresh and remarry again.
If she was marrying George and divorcing Nicholas, she had to make sure he was alright.
Nicholas felt deflated. Not even his own wife believed in him. She must be awfully disappointed in him.
Kimberly teared up and shouted at Nicholas with her fists raised, "Shut up, Nic! Shut the hell up and leave!"
Nicholas mouth fell. The tears in Kimberly's eyes deflated him.
He had never seen her in such pains. She must really hate him now.
His head bent, Nicholas quietly walked out of the conference hall. He overheard the insults and mocks the Goldstein's vented on him.
"Such a loser."
"He doesn't belong here. He should get lost."
"Good riddance. Kimberly deserves better."
"Drop dead, bastard."
At the doorway, Nicholas took a quick glance at his wife. She was sobbing and rubbing her eyes.
Nicholas felt pained. He never meant things to end this way.
He thought if his in-laws could at least give him a chance, he just might be able to save them.
It was a gamble but if the gamble payed off, the Goldstein household would be indebted to him forever.
But that wasn't going to happen because they have no single regard for him nor do they even believed he would ever raise twenty million dollars.
Nicholas bite his underlip bitterly, eyes welling tears as he reflected on his whole misfortunes.
Madam Elizabeth knew about his past. She knew his true identity which was why she married him to her granddaughter, Kimberly.
He owed Madam Elizabeth his life.
When she was alive, she protected him from his enemies while he stayed in hiding under the Goldstein household.
But after she died, the same Goldstein family turned against him.
Sir Harold had never liked him one bit and he showed his true colours after Madam Elizabeth passed away.
He transformed Nicholas into a house help.
Even though the Goldstein family were wealthy to hire a hundred maid, Sir Harold didn't.
He chose to overwork Nicholas.
For three years, Nicholas slaved for the Goldstein household that he became popularly known as the Trash son-in-law.
"I'm a failure," Nicholas said aloud. "I'm a hopeless failure. Even my beloved thinks so little of me it's heartbreaking."
His mind was so blank, he didn't know how he kept walking until he was outside the gates of the Goldstein's villa.
Nicholas kicked and punched the air in anger, cursing himself for being so unfortunate in life.
He asked God why was he so worthless to be born. He hated himself now that he would rather be dead than remain alive.
Suddenly, his cell phone rang in his pocket. He dipped his hand in and brought out his cell phone and picked the call.
"Hello?" He said, holding his call phone to his ear.
"Young master," a middle aged man's voice said excitedly. "Finally, I found you."
Nicholas raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me but who is this?"
"It is I, Edgar, your butler," the caller replied sharply. "Oh, young master. It's been ages. I can't believe I finally found you after searching all these time."
Nicholas forced a small smile. It has been three long years since he heard from Edgar and the Phoenix family.
How Edgar managed to find his phone number was a miracle since all forms of communication was cut off between him and his family.
Was this something he should celebrate? They were the very ones whom disowned and kicked him out of the family in the first place.
Shutting his eyes, he let out an exasperated sigh.
"What it is, Edgar? Have my family finally proven me guilty? If yes, then I'm prepared for my punishment."
"What?" Edgar exclaimed excitedly. "Don't say that, young master. No one is going to punish you."
Nicholas opened his eyes slightly and held his phone close to his ears.
"Does that means, I'm innocent?"
"Yes Young master," Edgar said. "Your life is no longer in danger because you've inherited all your family's wealth."
Nicholas eyes widened and he felt a chill run up his spine. This sounded too good to be true.
"What did you just say?" He demanded, his hands shaking.
"The Phoenix five hundred billion dollars networth, it's companies, business organisations, stocks and investment properties all belong to you."
Silence.
Nicholas didn't say anything. He was so surprised he opened and closed his mouth.
"Impossible!" He exclaimed. "Is this some joke?"
"This is no joke, young master," Edgar said. "Lord Fitzpatrick is dead. Before he died, he turned over the Phoenix wealth over to you in his will."
Nicholas eyes widened. "Lord Fitzpatrick... My grandfather's dead?!"
"Sadly yes, young master," Edgar replied. "You're the new Lord of the Phoenix family. Please return home quickly and be our leader."
Three years ago, Lord Fitzpatrick Phoenix, head of the Phoenix family was poisoned at a gala event. He was admitted into a foreign hospital and was unconscious for days. The gala event was hosted by no other person but his favorite grandson, Nicholas. Nicholas had no idea about the poison but since he was the host of the gala, all accusing fingers fell on him. He was falsely accused by his family for poisoning Lord Fitzpatrick. A family trial was held to settle this issue. Due to their reputation, the Phoenix family chose not to involve the media nor the police.Since Lord Fitzpatrick wasn't dead but unconscious, it was easier to resolve things without the outside world knowing. Nicholas was brought up before his family to defend himself over the allegations charged at him. "I didn't do it," Nicholas defended himself. "You all know me. I can never poison my grandfather. I love and respect him to do such evil to him.""Shut up!" Nicholas uncle, Alfred snapped. "You're the host
Nicholas wasn't entirely convinced everything Edgar told him was the truth. He was determined to find out for himself. It wouldn't be funny if he returns back home and this whole thing winds up being a prank. It could mean his death. As an outsider, returning home from exile without a formal announcement, is a taboo. The punishment is certain death. Although he trusted Edgar because Edgar wasn't the type to make jokes. To make fun of Lord Fitzpatrick name is punishable by death. Edgar wouldn't take that risk over a prank or joke. However, to be on the safe side, if he must return back to his family, he must first be sure to confirm. That night, while everyone was fast asleep, Nicholas sneaked out into the cold night and placed a call to Edgar. Edgar answered the call as if he had been waiting by the telephone all these while. "Hello, Edgar," Nicholas said, his voice heavy with exhaustion."My lord, please, please tell me where you are," Edgar begged on the other end of the li
The grand hall of the Phoenix family estate was filled with people, all waiting with baited breath for the arrival of the exiled grandson. Finally, the doors at the far end of the room swung open and the crowd erupted into cheers and applause as Nicholas strode confidently into the room.He was tall and mysterious, with an air of authority that overwhelmed everyone present. He wore a diamond encrusted face mask which only had two openings revealing his piercing blue eyes. His dark hair was styled in a sleek, modern cut, and he wore a tailored suit that showed off his broad shoulders and athletic build. As he made his way through the crowd, people reached out to touch him, as if to confirm that he was real. He was Lord Fitzpatrick favorite grandson, returned from exile after three years of being away from his family and his home. The family conference meeting was held in the grand dining hall of the family's estate. The tables and chairs had been pushed to the sides of the room,
Kimberly turned to him. "Where have you been, Nic? We've been looking for you all day."Nicholas hated to see no remorse nor guilt written on her face. She seemed relaxed and at ease. He demanded. "What is he doing here?"George chuckled, a smarmy grin spreading across his face. "Ah, if it isn't Nicholas, the trashy son-in-law. I'm glad you could join us. I was just showering your wife with gifts, as any man should do for the woman he loves."Nicholas eyes narrowed. "You stay away from my wife," he growled.Kimberly stood up, her hands shaking. "Nic, I have something to tell you. I've filed for a divorce."Nicholas froze. He had only been gone for two days and now she's already filed for divorce?Kimberly continued. "George has offered to compensate you with a million dollars."Nicholas heart broke at Kimberly's words. He knew she had been driven to this point, because of her family's decision. They must've treated her so poorly that she felt she had no other choice but to leave h
"You've ruined us," Lady Carla shrieked, beating Nicholas with her fists. "You will be the end of us."She was being restrained by Master Damian while Nicholas tried to get away from her. Somehow, Lady Carla and Master Damian had managed to curb the situation by soothing George's anger. George had returned back into the house and was now seated beside Kimberly once again. Kimberly did her best to keep him in a good mood by teasing him and cracking jokes. It worked and George was once again returned to being the ugly jolly fellow he was ten minutes ago before the storm. Inorder to punish Nicholas, Lady Carla kicked him out of the villa into the freezing cold outside the backyard. "You will remain outside until morning, you piece of trash," she yelled and slammed the door, locking it from inside. Nicholas stood to his feet and dusted his shabby clothes. He walked around the villa to the front door where he peeked through the window. In the cozy living room, he saw his wife and
"I will go, Father," Nicholas said confidently. "I have always been eager to prove myself and serve the family."The conference hall was quiet for sometime. Then everyone burst into uncontrollable laughter. Nicholas didn't falter. He stood tall and less bothered. "Will you keep quiet?" Jean shouted at him, wiping an imaginary tears off his eyes. "Just who do you think you are?""You piece of trash," Tiana mocked. "Seat down or go wash the toilets. No one gave you permission to speak."Lady Carla was seething in rage. She yelled at Nicholas. "You're nothing but a bunch of embarrassment to me and my family. Shut the hell up and seat down."But Nicholas didn't seat down neither did his eyes left Sir Harold's face. Sir Harold had always hated Nicholas but he was surprised at his sudden boldness and a little impressed. None of his children and grandchildren were ever this bold to even try. They were afraid of the Phoenix family. And why shouldn't they? In the eyes of the Phoenixes, t
The Phoenix estate was off the borders of North Hills city. There were ten thriving cities in the country with North Hills being the smallest city in all. Liberty state is the fourth biggest city and lies south, off North Hills. Liberty State fell under the rule of the Phoenix family. They bought the city from the government thirty years ago and had developed it into a luxury paradise. They run their city like a business and it's ran by one man—the Lord of the Phoenix family. Foreigners often end up comparing Liberty state to Dubai after a visit. The Phoenix estate was off the coast of Liberty state on a small island called Star island. Floyd and Jean rode in five rented motorboats which took them all the way to the shores of the island. The two men, dressed in tuxedos and loaded with expensive gifts approached the golden gates of the Phoenix estate. They came along with twenty men, each carrying big gifts for the new Lord.As they approached the gates, they met two giganti
Nicholas was ushered in a grand office, with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the sprawling city ahead of the island. Nicholas father, dressed in a tailored suit, sat behind a large desk. He stood up when he saw his son and bowed to honour him. "Welcome home, Lord Niklaus."Nicholas sat down in the executive chair of the grand office and relaxed comfortably. "Rise, father," Nicholas said. His father rose to his feet and returned back to his seat. "Surely, you'd want us to change you out of that shabby suit, my Lord."Nicholas shook his head. "This suit is a gift from my wife!""Forgive my words, my Lord," his father said. "Is my wife taken to the waiting room?" Nicholas asked Edgar whom was bowing with a knee before him. Edgar nodded. "Yes my Lord. She's being well attended to as you ordered.""Good," Nicholas turned to his father. "I'm sure you're waiting for me to explain my plans, father.""Yes," his father admitted. "Your behavior is strange. I'm baffled by the
