Chapter 11

"What the actual fuck!", Someone yelled from behind. "Did it just say transfer failed!".

Someone giggled and from a giggle, it grew to a hiss, a sigh, and then finally, an uproar of laughter.

"He thought he could challenge the governor's son!" The crowd murmured.

"Such a poor bastard. He should have just stuck to being broke, he tried to be pompous too!" Laughter was in the air as more and more people ridiculed Maxwell.

Maxwell's heart raced against his chest as he tried again but it still showed the same thing.

John laughed arrogantly, "Oh Maxwell dear, here I was, thinking you were smart. I thought you were a competition for me but guess not. Did you think you could defeat me? Or my dad?"

"Loser. You know what they say about the poor. Their pride is the only thing they have left" Vicky interjected. She walked over to her boyfriend and tongue-kissed him while she stared at Maxwell.

Maxwell frowned, staring at the card in his hand.

Why didn't it work?

"Grandfather couldn't have lied to me", he whispered to himself. "Something must be wrong with the machine".

He looked at the card in his hand and slid it back into the machine. An idea came to him as he asked the director, "Sir, what's the daily limit of transactions for this ATM?".

The director rolled his eyes at him, "It should be fifty million or so".

"And how much is a single withdrawal?" Maxwell's eyes had brightened up again.

Everyone listened quietly as they waited to see what would happen.

"Maybe five million, I'm not sure. Does that matter? It can’t be because of that. Everybody knows that you’re just bluffing all the time!" The director said disdainfully.

"That must be it! Let me try again".

He walked fast to the machine.

His grandmother who had angrily stormed off turned her back. She noticed when everyone started moving back to where her grandson was again, "What is he doing this time?".

Alvin stretched his neck and squinted his eyes, "I think they are going back to see what he's still doing there". His eyes followed the crowd to where they stopped. "Don't you think we should have a look too".

His grandmother seemed to have given up on him. She shook her head and slowly lowered her gaze to the floor.

"There is no need. He'd make a fool of himself again and I don't want to see it. Let's go home".

Alvin looked a little worried but he said nothing. Someone needed to help the old woman get back home with her limping feet and shaking hands. Her balance wasn't right so Alvin held her hand as he guided her out of the gate.

John held a mocking gaze at Maxwell, Vicky was ready to laugh again and the professor had a blank expression on his face. After the question Maxwell had asked him, he had a bit of doubt about what John had said.

"Let's see how you want to be mocked this time", John said after everyone had gathered and we were set to see.

"If this doesn't work for the second time, I will be expelling you for wasting my time for the second time in a row", the director said boldly.

Maxwell paid him no mind. He didn't flinch, rather, he drew in a deep breath and proceeded to tap on the enter key.

The crowd behind him poked their heads as they tried to see what was happening. Maxwell asked to confirm the account number and the director did.

"Alright, here goes nothing", he tapped on the amount again and 'sent'.

The machine beeped a 'ting', which everyone knew meant it had gone.

"The limit for each transaction is ten million, and one can not go above it."

Everyone was shocked and a little stunned.

"Did it work?".

Comments flew around leaving John and Vicky speechless. The director stood behind him to confirm it.

"It went through.". The director turned to John to confirm, " He really did it!".

John was speechless. Vicky's jaw dropped. The crowd left them and joined Maxwell as they watched him transfer the last amount needed to complete his deal

"You guys should help me count". The crowd began, "Five".

"Four".

"Three".

He barely got to one when it finally showed success.Everyone yelled and roared in surprise.

"I believe I made my part of the deal, please proceed with yours, Mr. Amos". Maxwell smiled.

He winked at John.

Mr Amos stood with his mouth open trying his best as he thought of what to say when John shouted.

"That bastard stole this money!".
