Chapter 10

Everyone stood silent as they watched Maxwell. No one moved. He took a look around the faces of the people he was talking to, "Did you guys hear me?"

Suddenly, there was an uproar of laughter. Maxwell stood in the center of the crowd that came to him when they heard what he had said.

"This guy is crazy", Vicky's laughter was louder. She cackled and slapped her knees as she used her other hand to onto her stomach.

"What's gotten into him?".

John Reider walked to his girlfriend, "It happens to the poor. He must have thought he could challenge me. Poor bastard",

Everyone laughed at him until they had their fill. Maxwell rolled his eyes at them and then crossed his arms. He waited until they had finished and then said, "So, do we have a deal?".

Another round of laughter happened, this time louder than the other. It rang in eardrums, annoying him more than the first.

"Have you gone mad?", His grandmother limped her way to him and dragged him by his collar, "Haven't you disgraced us enough?".

He looked into her eyes, he could see the fear in her eyes. She was sure he was ill.

John came back to him, "Your grandmother is right. You must have lost your mind from the pressure of having to deal with this. It's a pity for someone as poor as you". His lips curled into a mean grin.

Alvin ran to drag him away but Maxwell stood firm, he turned to the Director. With a serious expression, he brought a sheet of paper and a pen from behind his pocket.

"If you agree to my terms, then give me that school's official bank statement".

The director hardened his face. "Young boy, I should not be one for you to play this game with. If you do this, you might end up being expelled".

Maxwell was not backing down. Everyone could see the seriousness in his eyes, "Neither am I. Like I said, if we have a deal then give me the bank account".

The atmosphere was getting tense and the director turned to leave when John Reider stopped him.

"Director.. oh, I mean our dearest Mr. Amos, how about you agree to his terms, let's see how this ends?".

Mr Amos raised a brow at him. "Really?".

John nodded. Vickie added her opinion too, "You should make a demand too. You can just have him being the only one to wish!".

John squinted his eyes, "You have a point!".

He turned to the direction, "Mr Amos. Agree to his demands, on one condition too".

He paused, and then said with a smirk,"If he can't do this, he will have to run naked around the school field three times".

The director nodded.

He turned to Maxwell and smiled, "We have a deal." He dipped his hand into his breast pocket and brought out his cell phone, a light scroll and he turned the phone around, "Here is the official bank account number for the school.

"Call it out", Maxwell said. Everyone watched as he took the numbers and walked out on them. His grandmother and Alvin watched in horror.

"Maxwell, come back here", his grandmother tried to call him but he ignored her. He stopped in his tracks for a few seconds, to confirm the card at the back of his pocket, the one his grandfather gave to him.

Once he was sure it was still with him, he continued walking.

He walked with confidence and without facing his back, even for once.

Maxwell got to an ATM and stood there to bring his card out.

"I wonder where he is getting the confidence from. Aren't you curious?", Vicky said amidst the crowd. John turned to stare at her. He had an annoyed expression on his face.

"Who cares?". He scoffed.

"You're right." Someone else said. "Everyone here knows that Maxwell is broke and barely able to afford his tuition, let alone, cash for sponsorship. He's bluffing", they broke into laughter again.

Reider's mood lightened, even with the tone of his voice lightened. He smiled a little.

"You're right. The bastard can't even take three square meals without a student loan".

Maxwell's grandmother turned her head swiftly and glared at John. She seized him up with her eyes and walked to her grandson, Alvin followed her like a minion.

When she got to him, she smacked him on the head with her purse.

"Do you know what you're getting yourself into? These kids are making jest of you!"

Alvin affirmed what she said, "Bro, you shouldn't let John get to you this much. You know how he gets. He's just a jerk. You're getting cut up on his web. Stop it!".

Maxwell was more focused on setting up the ATM than he was listening to what they were saying. It angered his grandmother the more.

She didn't bother saying a word again, she dragged him by ear and turned to leave when he stopped her.

"Grandma!", He yelled. She drew in her breath and faced him.

"What?!!". She scorned him with her expression.

Calmly, he recollected himself and stood tall before her. "Grandma, I know you're only trying to help me but this has been going on for too long. I need to stop it". He enclosed her in his arms while he slowly brushed her hair with his fingers. "You don't need to worry much about me. I'll be fine. Trust me!".

She sighed slightly when he said that. "I just don't want you to get hurt", she whispered. A tear in her eyes.

"I won't". He kissed her on the forehead and slowly tore away from her.

He approached the machine once again and slowly brought his card out from his back pocket, and slid it in.

John and the rest of the school came to stand beside him. With a smirk, John whispered in his ear, "I wonder how it'll be to see you naked".

Maxwell ignored him. He clicked on the machine's keypad and typed the digits he wanted.

"I'll be sending thirty million dollars to you, right?"

Everyone giggled. The director answered with a hysterical 'yes'.

"Alright", and then Maxwell's hand clicked on 'enter'.

The payment was processed for a while.

"It's taking too long", someone mumbled.

"A few more seconds", Maxwell answered back. Just as he was about to draw in a breath, the machine pushed his card out.

'Transfer failed'.
