Chapter 4

Maxwell stood frozen as he watched the men in perfectly fitted black suits approach him. They had sunglasses on and wore earphones that had wires connected to the back of their necks. They looked like bodyguards in the matrix. He was stunned.

"Excuse me, sir. Are you Maxwell Reed?"The most intimidating of them stepped forward. He had the chest of a muscled tiger and a complimenting battle scar to go with it. He smiled regardless.

"I… I… I'm not sure." He stuttered. "It depends on what you want with him", he stepped backward, searching desperately for the best way to run from.

"We were sent to find you, Mr Reed. Someone important wants to meet with you. Come with us, please".

The scar-faced Hulk said.

Maxwell moved two steps back, "Who are you people and where would you be taking me?".

His breathing hastened. He sucked air through his teeth, "Are you guys some kind of killers or something?"

"No, sir, and this," he lowered his sunglasses and then looked around suspiciously, "This is a public space. Let's go somewhere private".

"I'm not going anywhere". Maxwell backed away slowly. He turned fully and tried to sprint when some men caught him by the arm. They pulled him back. Maxwell was pressed against two hefty men. He groaned as he felt the life being squeezed out of him.

"Let me go!"

"Mr Maxwell Reed, an important guest has asked us to bring you—”

Maxwell stomped his foot into the man's chest. He went staggering back slowly and almost fell. He regained his stance and closed the gap between them.

"Next time, I won't be so lenient", he told the man. "Unhand me".

With his intimidating structure, standing a foot taller than Maxwell, the bodyguard bent to his height, "We were asked to bring you and so we have to deliver. Steady".

He raised his eyes to the men who held Maxwell down and snapped his fingers.

"Tie his hand and put him in the car".

"No! No!! I said No!!!", Maxwell fought to be set free. He twisted his arms and turned his neck, loud grunts were heard from him while they carted him away to the car.

It was a large SUV with tinted glasses. One of the men held him in place while the other tried to open the boot. It flew open and they struggled to tuck him in.

"Tie his wrist. We don't want him getting loose before we reach the boss'", their boss said. He came up to the back to inspect what they were doing.

Maxwell forced his hand away from the grasp of one man and threw a jab to his face. Blood trickled down immediately. The guard raised his hand to punch him back in reflex when the intimidating figure stopped him.

"How dare you touch the boss' guest?", He spoke to him with a commanding tone and bloodshot eyes.

The bleeding man stepped backward and disappeared behind the car while his scar-faced boss shifted his gaze to Maxwell, "I suggest you be careful, Mr. Reed. We should have another 'problem' please".

The back of the car lowered after his hands had been tied together and they were all ready to go. They duct-taped his mouth. Maxwell could only grunt and mumbled underneath that leash.

"The boss will be well pleased".

The car came to a harsh stop which caused Maxwell to bump his head into the car. He winced in pain as he rolled back in place.

Maxwell could hear the car door open. He pressed his eyes shut as he waited for the scary-looking man to come to him.

"We are here!" They raised the back of the car and pulled him out.

Nervously, still with his eyes closed, Maxwell felt his feet touch the ground. He started moving.

"The boss would be glad to meet you. Open your eyes".

Maxwell hesitated but the sound of a large door being open provoked his eyelids to click open.

One look at where he was and his mouth fell open.

As he entered the opulent mansion, he was immediately struck by the grandeur that surrounded him. The marble floors beneath his worn-out sneakers felt like a world apart from his modest dormitory. His abductor's house exuded luxury and affluence at every turn. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a warm and inviting glow on the lavish furnishings. Ornate paintings adorned the walls, depicting scenes from a life he could only dream of.

The boy hesitated, feeling out of place in his humble attire, yet his curiosity urged him forward.

Despite the stark contrast between his world and this wealthy haven, Maxwell was able to stay focused. He wondered who had brought him here.

He had not offended anyone rich, nor did he have anything valuable to be taken for.

A large shiny door opened to see an old man reading a newspaper while he sipped from a teacup. The guards dragged him there.

Once the old man's eyes locked with his, he jumped up. He ran to Maxwell and gave him a warm embrace that had a tight squeeze to it at the end.

"Finally!!! You are here", his smile lines curved deeply in his face. "I've prayed to the heavens every day that I get to meet you".

The old man's hands went for his face, slowly caressing his forehead and eyebrows. Maxwell was speechless yet quiet. They unstrapped the tape and unblinded his wrist.

Maxwell sighed at first and then dragged in a breath of fresh air. The old man excitedly waited for him to speak.

"I'm sorry, but do I.. do I know you?"He stuttered.

"You might not know me but I am glad to see you". He hugged him again. "You look very much like your father".

Maxwell raised a brow, "You know my father?".

"Yes." He pressed on his chest, "My son".
