Chapter Nine

Rhys knew how it felt to have hopes being shattered to a million pieces. Every time a new couple came to the orphanage, he had hopes that they would take a liking to him and pick him, but in the end, it was just wistful dreams, it never happened. He had to watch them choose a different kid and go home like one big happy family; the type he never had and one he didn’t get before he was chased out of the orphanage.

He was chased to the streets where he had to survive, he had to learn various skills for survival, some of which he was not proud of, others that he regretted every time he closed his eyes to sleep.

“Rhys, Rhys.” The sound of his name snapped him back to reality, he looked at his father who was very concerned, the worried expression was not false. For a moment, he thought he was dreaming. Rhys assumed that he was just having a dream that would end at some point. “Are you okay, son?”

“Yes, Dad. I was just thinking about the past.”

“I’m sorry. The whole family failed you and I promise that we are going to make it up to you.”

“It’s alright Dad. The past is in the past, I’m glad that we are together now, we have a chance to make up for what we lost.” He smiled at his father. “Tell me about our family?”

“The Fernandez family is the head of the five prominent families in the country, we have alliance with two other families while our relationship with the remaining two are said to be stable on the surface.”

“And the five prominent families are?”

Alessandro gave him a sad look. ‘My son doesn’t even know anything about the upper class families.’

“Dad?” Rhys couldn’t understand the look he received.

“The names of the five prominent families are Fernandez, Topaz, Rissi, Garcia and Martinez. Our family have an alliance with the Topaz and Garcia families. Damian from earlier is a member of the Garcia family.”

“Oh. So we are the leading family, huh?” He enquired.

Before Alessandro could give a response, a phone started ringing, from the sound of the ringtone and the vibration from the pockets, Rhys knew it was his.

When he fished out his phone from the pocket, Alessandro clenched his fist tighter on the steering wheel, the phone that Rhys was using had cracks all over it. ‘How dare the Meyers family treat my son like a pauper! I would deal with them. An ordinary family, how hard can it be to get rid of them.’

Rhys glanced at the name on the caller ID, he frowned a bit before ending the call. “Why is she calling?” He mumbled under his breath but was still heard by his father.

“Who was that?” Alessandro asked out of curiosity.

“Someone unimportant.” He replied. It was Malia that was calling, if it were in the past, Rhys wouldn’t dare to reject her call but unfortunately, things were different. His mentality had changed from the moment he found out that he was the heir of a prominent family, he no longer wanted to be a slave to some random family which couldn’t even hold a candle to his.

As the traffic lights turned red, Alessandro pulled the car to a stop. He instantly got to work by messaging his assistant, requesting for a long of things to be delivered to his house. Rhys was about to speak when the phone started ringing once again.

Rhys could only answer the call. “Hello?”

“You bastard!” Malia’s voice was very loud that it resounded in the car, if it was heard by Alessandro or not, he didn’t show any indication, only texting on his phone but if anyone looked clearly, his eyes were frigid with anger, his aura increased sharply. Rhys didn’t even notice the change in his countenance.

“I need all the details on a certain Meyers family,” Alessandro typed on his phone, he glanced at his son before he continued. “And everything on Rhys Meyers, I mean everything about him. Send it to me in an hour, not a minute late.”

Rhys had to listen to his wife spew a lot of curse words before he interrupted her. “Why did you call me?” He asked coolly, looking out the window.

“Where the hell have you been? Why are my clothes not washed and why is the house a complete mess?”

“I had somewhere important to be.”

“Are you crazy? Which important place does a loser like you have to visit?” There was no response from him. “You must return to the house now!”

“Choke on the irony of that and drop dead while you’re at it.” He rolled his eyes.

“Who do you take me for? I said you should return home right away.”

“What if I say no?”

“ Then you should be ready to face the consequences.”

The beeping from the phone indicated that Malia had ended the call. The atmosphere in the car was very awkward as the lights turned green and Alessandro started to drive to a place known to him, He didn’t know how to start the conversation between him and his son, one part of him was curious to find out, while the other part scorned him on the fact that he had missed out on a lot in Rhys life.

It was as if Rhys could tell the conflicts that was happening in his father’s mind. He coughed lightly to ease a bit of the weird atmosphere. “We’ve been driving for a while, where are we going to?” At that moment, his stomach growled, Rhys was completely embarrassed. “When was the last time you had a decent meal?”

Rhys ran a hand through his hair, trying to recall but all he could come up with was light snacks that he could afford during his breaks. “Two days ago?”

Alessandro’s face darkened.
