Chapter 2~

Alex stood in the middle of the room, his heart shattered into a million pieces. He didn't want to believe Jane meant those words, he feels there was something more to it than just her sudden decision.

He attempted to speak, to explain himself, but before he could utter a single word, Mrs Susan's stern voice cut through the air.

"You're not worthy of my daughter, isn't that enough to prove that she doesn't want you?" she declared, her gaze piercing through Alex like a dagger.

His breath caught in his throat as the weight of those words sank in. It felt like the room had grown colder, and the once warm atmosphere suddenly turned icy.

Alex's eyes pleaded for understanding, his lips forming words that never found their way out. He felt a lump in his throat, but gulped it down with a force.

How could he express the depth of his feelings when confronted with such harsh judgment?

Just as he struggled to find his voice, Susan again said, this time her voice stained with a smile. "Well, Chris is here." She announced.

Chris? The name sounded familiar to him. Chris was his best friend, but then... why is he here? Probably to see him or something.

He felt relieved and thought he should confront Chris of what was going on, if possible to plead to Jane on his behalf.

All hope was shattered as Mrs Marietta said; "He said he has just a few minutes, and would want to have a word or two with you, Jane."

Alex's mind raced, trying to process the sudden change in demeanor. "Tell him to give me a minute, I'll be down soon."

Does it mean Chris has been showing up here behind his back? Confused and slightly taken aback, he turned to Jane, who was standing nearby, for an explanation.

"Why is he here?" He questioned.

"Am I supposed to answer that?" She queried. "Look, Chris showing up here has nothing to do with you, Alex. Your business is to sign the document and leave this place."

"I am not signing this document until I get an answer to my question!" He foamed, walking past them and heading downstairs.

"Chris, what's going on here?" Alex questioned, waiting for an explanation.

"What other explanation are you seeking for, Alex? Isn't it obvious already, Chris is Jane's new husband-to-be. And very soon, they both will be getting married."

He ignored her. "I need a god-damn explanation, Chris! What the hell are you doing here?" Alex asked, his voice loud.

"I'm sorry, Alex, but you heard what Mrs Sarah just said. Jane and I will be getting married soon."

His response threw him off guard, and his brain was finding it difficult to interpret those words better. "You are secretly meeting with my wife behind my back?"

"You don't have to sound too surprised, Alex. Sarah doesn't want you anymore, you can't give her the future she dreamed of, but I can."

"You're a betrayal, Chris! And all these while I have trusted you to the end. This is how you treat me?"

Chris chuckled, a mischievous smile formed on his face. "Well, Alex, it's because you've been blind to what's been going on right in front of you."

Perplexed, Alex furrowed his brow. "What do you mean? What's happening that I'm not aware of?"

"Isn't it obvious? Or do you need more explanation to sink into that blocked head of yours?"

Alex squinted at Chris, still not grasping the situation. "I don't get it." He turned, looking at Jane. "Have you two been making out behind my back?"

Chris burst into laughter, causing a few heads to turn in their direction. "Oh, Alex, you're missing the bigger picture. It's not about us sleeping behind your back, it's the fact that you are no longer considered as a son-in-law anymore."

Alex nodded his head, now he was understanding where this was heading. All these while he had tried to be the best husband, working tirelessly just to see Sarah smile.

Notwithstanding how her mother had been treating him, he never complained because of her, knowing he was doing everything just for her and his children's sake.

Unknown to him, while he was putting on his best effort, she was hanging around with his best friend while keeping him in the dark.

And it was surprising to him that Chris could forget so soon what he had done for him in the past. The reason he was wearing a good suit and driving an expensive car was all because of him.

He helped Chris start his business, he spent a lot for him because they were not just friends, but brothers. Well, that was what he thought.

"After everything I did for you, everything we've shared, this is how you show your gratitude for it? By cheating with my wife?"

"Alex, just stop all this nonsense and sign the document already. We don't have the eternity to wait." Susan queried,

Alex stood wondering if he had ever done wrong falling in love with Sarah, or if he had ever made a mistake helping Chris to be what he is today.

He gazed at the papers on the table, each line stood as a painful reminder of broken promises. "I thought we had something real," he whispered, his voice barely audible against the cold silence.

Jane looked at him with cold indifference. Her eyes still held the cold expression, like she didn't mind how he felt. "Just sign the damn contract, Alex. I don't want to see your face any longer than necessary," she sneered, her words cutting through the air like a knife.

Tears welled up in Alex's eyes as he picked up the pen, he hesitated, trying to get hold of himself but couldn't. He finally found reasons to sign the document.

"I can't believe it has come to this," he mumbled, his voice breaking as he completed the signature. "You're going to end all we've shared just like this?"

"Yes, Alex, and it's for the best. And we both know it," she declared scornfully, with no act of remorse.

As he walked towards the door, Jane's voice sounded. "Hurry up and leave. I don't want to see your face anymore," she spat, and it was evident in her voice how eager she wanted him out of the building.

The door closed behind him, and that was how he left the Williams home, sealing the chapter of his life that had once been a love story.
