Chapter Six

After Alex finished his usual kitchen chores, he left the house. The constant nagging from his mother in law was driving him to insane and he nothing but to be far away from the chaotic dynamics in the home.

He went to a nearby store and bought cigarettes before heading back home, but rather than entering the house, he chose to sit beneath a large tree just right outside th house. He lit his cigarette and exhaled clouds of smoke.

Memories that he had desperately attempted to suppress began flooding his thoughts. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't push them away. The pain was so intense that it made his heart ache.

Looking up at the starlit sky, he muttered the names of his fallen companions—names he had buried deep within his heart.

No one was aware of his true identity, and he wasn’t prepared to expose it. The only other person who knew who he really was, aside from him, was that old doctor who had saved him when he was on the brink of death.

Alex then began listing the names of all his deceased comrades.

"I promise you all, soon, very soon, I shall avenge your deaths with the blood of our enemies," he vowed. "They stole your lives, and I shall exact revenge upon them in the most agonizing manner possible. Just hold on a bit longer; after I finish everything, I swear I will join you. In the end, we can continue our mission in the underworld." He felt a deep sorrow as he spoke to the sky.

Suddenly, his phone rang. He opted to ignore it, as he was overwhelmed with emotions, lost in thoughts of his fallen friends and painful memories.

He wanted to hold onto those memories, for the anguish fueled his quest for vengeance.

However, the persistent ringing eventually compelled him to answer the call. "Hello, who is this?" he said, his voice steady.

"Hello... Alex! Save me!"

Upon hearing his wife's frantic tone on the other end, filled with worry and exhaustion, Alex felt a frown form as he struggled to find the right words.

Just as he was about to respond to her plea, he heard a loud crash as someone stumbled.

"Can you hear me? Hello, Cassie? Are you there? Please talk to me, Cassie!" Alex continued to call out to his wife, hoping for a reply, even though he knew the call had ended.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, he swiftly dashed inside to search for his sister-in-law Janet and mother-in-law Gloria.

Alex immediately found them in the hall as they watched television.

In a panicked tone, he turned to Gloria and asked, "Where is Cassie? What happened to her? Where in the world did she go?

Janet, seated higher up from the TV, shot him a frosty glance.

"Why do you care?" she replied coldly. "You’re questioning us now after she's gone? I thought you didn't care!" She said sarcastically.

Gloria chose to dismiss Alex entirely and turned her face back to the screen. The TV show was more important to her than her useless son in law.

Frustrated, Alex confronted his sister-in-law Janet with the more intensity now. "Janet, please tell me, where did your sister go? Did she tell you any details about where she as going? Just spill it out!" he insisted, his frustration increasing.

If anything happens to Cassie, he would never be able to forgive himself.

He owe that to the old man who aved him.

"Let me ask you, Alex, do you have a wife who would rather seek help from someone because her husband is a piece of trash?," Janet responded disrespectfully. "What do you expect? You used to say she wasn't beautiful and that you didn't care about her. So, what is it now that has you searching for her? What’s your angle? Why look for my sister when she’s finally trying to better herself?"

Realizing he wouldn't gain any information from them, Alex glanced around desperately until his gaze fell upon a vibrant flower vase.

Without hesitation, he rushed over to it and, after picking it up, smashed it onto the floor, shattering it into pieces.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Alex? Have you lost your mind? Why would you do something like that? That was an expensive gift that a friend bought for me.

Do you think you can afford such a vase? You can’t even take care of your own needs, and yet you want to destroy my belongings? How dare you!" Gloria shouted, furiously pointing a finger at him.

"Save it, Gloria! I’m not interested in your insults now," Alex retorted, glaring back at her.

If there was thing everyone was aware of, then it's Alex unyielding nature.

"Cassie just called me and said she’s in danger. I have no clue where she went or how to reach her. But before I could ask her more information, the call ended abruptly, and now I’m here asking for you where the fuck she went to. It’s not my life at stake; it’s your daughter’s life, Gloria, not mine," Alex said angrily.

He had reached his limit with both his mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Had it not been for the promise he made to the old doctor to marry Cassie and protect his family for a period of time, he would have left this household long ago.

"Oh, stop with the lies, Alex. Do you think we're fools? My sister called you for help you say? Why should she reach out to you instead of calling me or mom?

Enough with the theatrics. Do you need money for something? Is that why you're putting on this show for us?" Janet replied rudely as she crossed her arms defensively.

Alex tried to hold in his anger and frustration as he pointed...

"Check if she called you on your phone, and here's the number she used to reach out to me. Compare it to the number you might see on your phone and fucking see if they match"  Alex told her and unlock his phone before he threw it down at their feet in frustration.

Janet and Gloria exchanged glances before both picked up their phones. They checked and noticed several missed calls, which made them feel slightly anxious.

They retrieved Alex's phone from the floor and compared the numbers against the one that called them, confirming it was indeed the same.

Without wasting any time, Gloria rushed over to Alex. "What did my daughter tell you? She's in danger! From whom?"

Alex could see the fear in Gloria's eyes and chose not to dwell on the harsh words she had thrown at him earlier.

Alex rubbed his forehead in frustration as he recounted what had happened with the phone call from Cassie.

"I truly don't know what's happening, but when I heard her voice, I sensed something was off. That’s not how Cassie usually sounds. She seemed incoherent or dizzy, or something along those lines. I’m uncertain about the situation, but the fact that she called all of us for help suggests something significant is wrong. That’s why I came to ask you guys where she went. We need to reach her immediately; it could be a matter of life or death." Alx said exasperated.

"Plaza hotel... that's where went to meet Brandon to help our company." Janet said with a trembling voice.

"Please, bring my daughter home safely," Michael suddenly appeared and pleaded with Alex.

Out of the blue, Michael handed his car keys to Alex, who took them and dashed out of the house.

There was no time to linger and hear what his mother-in-law had to say about the urgency. He was determined to save Cassie regardless, a promise he made to the old doctor to safeguard his family.

Driving at full speed while skillfully avoiding traffic, Alex soon arrived at the Plaza Hotel.

After handing over his car keys to the valet, he faced a challenge entering the hotel. He couldn't simply walk in and demand to see Brandon; it was unlikely they would comply.

In that moment, an idea struck him. He approached the reception and, adopting an expression he hoped conveyed urgency, began to speak.

"Good evening, ma'am. My name is Alex, and I'm here to see Brandon Winifred. He's a friend of my wife and invited both of us here. I was occupied outside, so I sent my wife in first. Could you please let me know his room number? I believe I may have arrived a bit late. Also, before you ask, my phone is dead since I couldn't charge it."

Alex flashed the receptionist a warm smile, making her heart skip a beat.

Let’s set aside the old clothes that he wore and the beard that almost obscured his face. Despite his current appearance, it was clear to everyone that Alex was indeed quite handsome.

Enchanted by Alex's charm, the receptionist didn't pause to call Brandon’s room for verification. She quickly found Brandon's information and gave it to Alex.

"He's in room 209 on the top floor," the receptionist informed him.

Alex responded with a grin and even winked at her, causing her to blush.

However, as Alex walked away from the young receptionist, his smile vanished, replaced by a stern frown that made him look like a soldier heading into battle.

Before long, after taking the elevator to Brandon's floor, he approached the room only to find four bodyguards stationed at the entrance.

As he attempted to walk past them, they blocked his path. Yet Alex didn’t engage in conversation; he raised his gaze, and in an instant, all four sturdy bodyguards were on the ground, groaning in pain from his swift actions.

They didn't even know when he started to move. All the felt was pain after the landed on the floor.

Having easily dealt with the bodyguards, Alex knocked on the door though he badly wanted to break it down.

Lacking a key card, he can only relied on someone inside to let him in, knowing that even an attempt to break the door wouldn’t work.

"Who's there? Can't you see we're busy? Didn't we tell you not to disturb us?" a voice inside barked.
