Chapter 3

Derrick looked at Ruby, he had a feeling that he'd never met her before. She was a complete stranger to him, yet here she was talking about being his wife and all.

"Do I know you?" Derrick asked, his face not hiding the surprise look that he had.

"No you don't. And you don't need to, I'm just a stranger who helped you out of the accident scene."

Derrick was confused by her kindness, a stranger helping whom she have never met and also coming by the hospital daily. He couldn't shake the feeling that something about this situation was strange. Why would a stranger go out of their way to save him, and then visit him in the hospital every day? It didn't make any sense.

"How did you find me?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"I was on my way home from work when I saw a car veer off the road," Ruby explained. "I pulled over and rushed to your side. You were unconscious, lying on the ground and bleeding. I called 911 and stayed with you until the ambulance arrived."

Derrick was in awe of Ruby's courage and compassion. She had risked her own safety to help a complete stranger. It was a truly selfless act. He wondered why she would do something like that.

"Why did you do that?" he asked. "Why would you help me?"

"I saw that you needed help, and I couldn't just leave you there," Ruby replied, her voice full of sincerity. "I don't know why, but something inside me told me that I had to do something. I didn't do it for any special reason. I just did it because it was the right thing to do as a good citizen."

Derrick nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude and respect for this woman who had saved his life. There was no romantic or personal connection between them, but he felt a strong bond of gratitude and admiration.

"I don't expect anything from you," Ruby said, her gaze sincere and direct. "You don't owe me anything. I just want you to know that there are still people in this world who care about others, even strangers. We're not all selfish and heartless."

Derrick felt a lump in his throat as he listened to her words. He had been feeling so lost and alone, but in that moment, he felt a sense of hope. Maybe there was still some good in the world, even if it was hard to see sometimes.

"Thank you," Derrick appreciated.

"I want you to focus on getting better. You don't need to worry about the hospital bills. I'll take care of them." Ruby assured him.

Derrick's eyes widened in surprise. He didn't know what to say. He was touched by her generosity, but he didn't want to be a burden.

"I can't ask you to do that," he replied, his voice hesitant. "I don't want to put you out."

Ruby simply smiled, her expression warm and reassuring. "It's not a burden," she assured him again. "I'm happy to do it. I want to help you get back on your feet, so you can start over and rebuild your life."

Derrick could feel the sincerity in her words, and he felt a sense of gratitude and relief wash over him. For the first time since the accident, he felt like he might be able to move forward and put the past behind him.

Ruby stepped out of the room, she went to pay off the hospital bills and after what seemed like forever, she came back into the room.

"I've cleared up your bills" Ruby said.

"Thank you, I really appreciate your kindness" Derrick replied.

"The doctor said that you can go back home if you wish to. Do you want to go back to your house?" She asked.

As Derrick listened to Ruby's words, he felt a sense of hope and excitement. The thought of leaving the hospital and starting fresh was enticing. But he also felt a pang of anxiety. The outside world felt daunting and overwhelming after everything that had happened.

"I'm not sure I'm ready to leave yet," he admitted. "I feel a bit lost."

"That's understandable," Ruby replied, her tone full of compassion. "You've been through a lot. But I want you to know that you don't have to face it alone, it will be better to go back to your family."

"I don't have anywhere to go," Derrick confessed, his voice low and heavy. "My wife left me, and I have no home or family to turn to. I'm not sure what to do."

Ruby's expression softened as she listened to his words. She could see the pain and uncertainty in his eyes.

"I understand how difficult this is for you," she sympathized gently.

" I have a proposal for you," Ruby said, her tone serious. "It's a bit unconventional, but I think it could be beneficial for both of us. I need a contracted husband. It would only be for show, to help me with my business. But it would give you a place to stay and a source of income. And most importantly, you can't and should never involve romance, it is clearly for contract purpose. Would you be willing to consider it?"

Derrick was taken aback by the offer. It was certainly not something he had expected. But he also knew that he needed to do something to get his life back on track.

He considered the proposal, weighing the pros and cons in his mind. Derrick also knew that he was in a difficult position, he didn't have any family or friends to turn to, and he didn't have any savings to fall back on. The thought of being homeless and jobless was terrifying.

In the end, he decided that the pros of accepting Ruby's proposal outweighed the cons. He had no choice but to find a way to survive, he couldn't go back to his sick and poor father who survived bearly on his gardening job.

"I'll do it," Derrick accepted, feeling a mixture of relief and trepidation. "I don't have any other options. But I just want to be clear, I don't want any real romantic relationship."

Ruby nodded, a look of understanding on her face and she took out Derrick's phone and putted in her digits.

"This is my phone number, I saved it as Ruby. Call me whenever you feel like leaving this hospital."

"Now! I'll leave now, I don't have any reason to stay back. My injuries are perfectly healed" Derrick said.

Ruby was taken aback, she knew that Derrick was in a difficult situation but she never imagined that he'll want to go back with her so soon.

"Okay, it's alright" She replied.

As they drove through the city, Ruby reached into her purse and pulled out a key. "Here," she gestured, handing it to Derrick. "This is the key to your new home."

Derrick took the key, his fingers trembling slightly. "You're doing all of this for me?" he asked, his voice filled with confusion. "Why?"

Ruby smiled, her eyes kind. "Because that is what is required, I need to have a husband to get my own shares of my father's company. To make our contract marriage seem real, you need to live in luxury and not your former wrenched self." She replied.

As the car pulled up to the house, Derrick couldn't believe his eyes. The place looked like something out of a movie, with its sprawling lawns and perfectly manicured gardens.

He got out of the car, his head spinning as he took it all in. He turned to Ruby, his voice barely a whisper. "I don't understand... This is too much."

She smiled, a look of understanding on her face. "I know it's a lot to take in, but this is just a token for accepting and signing the contract with me."

Derrick's eyes adjusted to the dim light, he noticed the opulence of the house. There were chandeliers and gilded mirrors, and everything looked like it belonged in a museum. He started to feel a bit dizzy, and he wondered if the whole thing was some kind of elaborate dream.

Then, he heard the click of heels behind him, and he turned to see Ruby standing in the doorway.

"Do you like it?" she asked, a smile playing on her lips.

"Of course yes" Derrick replied.

"Now you have to clear off the divorce between you and your ex-wife, cut out of her life completely. I wouldn't want any scandal in this contract marriage and disobeying my orders comes with a deadly consequences" Ruby warned.
