Chapter 6.

The door creaked open, and just in that moment, Doris hung up in anger. A bit more related to frustration in fact.

Her mother never acknowledged her and respected her, and it was a sad fact for Doris to face. Which mother doesn't acknowledge her daughter's wishes and even try to make them come true?

When she turned—which she didn't even want to because she'd been slightly upset with him—the face of her husband smiled wearily at her.

"Where have you been?" A tinge of anger mixed with her tone of voice.

Nathan managed his way over to her, then, displeased by the frown on her face, his hand met with her face to dry the tears away.

"I'm sorry, I received a news." He said, as casual as he could. But Doris was not moved.

"I received a call from mother, she said there was a problem." Still wearing the frown, Doris managed to say to her husband. They never kept secrets, so she knew better than to hide the truth from him.

Nathan knew that much, yet he couldn't dare bring himself to say a word to his dear wife. She was hurting, he knew that much. What could be done to put a smile on her beautiful face?

"You know," he began to say, but Doris didn't let him finish. She was still seated on the wooden chair at the dining table, eyes still flaring with anger.

"She doesn't understand me. She never has." She said grumpily, and Nathan wondered why she had been trying to transfer the aggression to him. He wasn't her evil mother!

Now that he thought of it: all the terrible things the Castiel had done to him and his family, all the menacing things Evelyn had caused him, it was brightly obvious to him that she was truly evil.

"I can't believe her sometimes. I just wish that she'd been my step mother, and my biological mother was somehow, somewhere alive. Elsewhere." She said with frustration indicated in her voice. Nathan couldn't blame her, although she still had a woman who pronounced herself her mother.

He didn't have anyone and for years, he had been all alone. Thanks to the heavens, he met Doris. She was the only woman, only human being who had looked at him as a being, and had been so kind and affectionate towards him.

"She said the family is in trouble, and the only way to save it is for me to marry an old horrible rich man--"

"I got a job!" Nathan blurted out, unable to keep his contented joy.

Doris's face consorted to a frown, not hearing her husband clearly. "What do you --" then her sparkling brown eyes shone wide. "A job? You mean it!"

"Yes!" Nathan smiled, revealing all of his thirty twos. "I got a job, Doris!"

Instantly, she jumped up to her feet, wrapping her arms around her husband in ecstacy. "Ohh I'm so happy!" Nathan lifted his wife off from the ground, carrying her in the warm embrace. "I'm so happy." From the immense joy, a drop of tear worked its way down to her eyelids, and uncontrollably, the tears of joy began to stream down her eyes.

After the couple had shared their brief moment, Nathan brought her to the couch, then sat closely beside her and whispered to her. "I know about our child." He caught his wife's eyes widened in shock, but it was a good thing. Suddenly, laughter from both of them filled the room, with neither of them believing the sudden change. They accepted the good news of course, with much passion and confidence. They just couldn't believe their eyes.

"I'm going to take good care of it, I promise." Nathan said, proudly. Then he decided to add. "You know, it is a really good job with a very heavy pay."

"Really? Oh I'm so so glad."

"So there's no need to get all worried, huh?" He said to her, his larger palm covering up her own tiny hands. "It's okay now."

He was going to save their family now and there was no stopping him.

In the home of the Castiels, money ruled. The furniture was imported, only of the best quality. Evelyn had specifically hired the best of Ettavile's interior designers and decorators and they definitely did some impressive work there.

Owen had a room upstairs, and so did his older sister, but since Doris had been married, the room had been temporarily locked. He was in the living room with his mother, engrossed in a serious argument.

"But really, you don't understand mother. Rachel isn't supposed to get married to him, isn't that obvious?"

"They were in love for goddamnsake! They were in love, Owen." Evelyn said, but Owen wasn't a fan of the theory.

"You definitely don't believe in love, mother. Clearly, that's why you hate Nathan right?" Owen said.

Owen was twenty one, only a year younger than Doris, but he still loved and respected his sister a lot. The only problem was her husband, Nathan.

"You're right. But remember that we both hate him." She reminded him, and he slowly bowed in agreement.

"But the whole theme of the story is about friendship. After all, they wouldn't have named the show, 'Friends'."

Seeing that Owen was getting all in his head—and she hated losing to an argument—Evelyn quickly changed topic.

"Pedro said that there's a company, uhh... The something something company--I can't seem to remember--has placed in a huge contract in the market."

Owen's playful face suddenly drowned as he grew a more serious look. "The what now?"

"Not important. But they have placed a contract, Owen."

"Hmm, well have you told Dor already? It's been a week now, and it's clear you both haven't settled your differences."

"She has to marry Pedro. He is going to get us that contract. I'm sure of it."

"Hmm, well he is rich enough."

"Yes yes! We need him as much as I need my stupid daughter right now." Evelyn barked out, furiously biting a finger nail. It was a habit she did whenever she was angry or frustrated.

There was a long silence. Then, she broke it with an order. "Leave her this text. I'm going to announce it to the family right now. Anyone who can help the family get this offer will be appointed as the family's CEO."

Owen's eyes brightened with shock, as a loud gasp escaped his mouth. "Are you serious?"

"Tell her just that. I am damn serious."
