CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED & FORTY-SEVEN

Adam gazed intently at her and opened his mouth, his voice calm yet laced with a cold edge, he finally spoke, addressing Cecil first,

"It's interesting, isn't it, Cecil? How the tables turn. All those years of disdain and now here we are, now you dare to ask me to save your life and even dare to refer to me as your Son? Have you forgotten so soon?"

Cecil's face paled, her earlier bravado dissolving, her lips trembled and she shut her eyes, tears seeping out of it as Adam's gaze bore into her. She tried to speak, to beg further, but the words seemed to catch in her throat, only managed to squirm on her toes.

Adam ignored her, and her silent self as he faced Louisa, the woman he had sworn to love all his life, the woman he had hoped to spend his newfound wealth with,

Turning his attention to Louisa, Adam's expression softened slightly, but the hurt was evident in his eyes, and they darkened as he gazed upon her,

"And Louisa, after everything, why should I save you? You made your choice
