Chapter 6 Being Questioned
Florence became nervous when she heard Alora wanted to call Ashton. She immediately smiled and said, "There is no need for that. I despise that jerk, but I am not irrational. I don't want to put you in a difficult situation since you've been together for so long. There is no need to contact him. It is enough for me that you and Mister Cox can live happily ever after. A couple of slaps are not a big deal. That is something I can live with."

When Alora heard that, she felt terrible. Her mother had always been domineering and unreasonable. She would never suffer in silence and would always want to exact revenge on others, even if the loss was minor. It seemed like she had truly changed.

Of course, Ashton had changed too. He became so unfamiliar to her. It was as if she did not know him at all.

When Florence noticed her daughter was beginning to reconsider, she smiled and said, "Don't worry about me, Alora. I will be content if you do not get involved with that jerk again. Just go about your business."

Tyson wrapped his arm around Alora's waist and said, "That's right, Alora. Weren't you invited to a gala tonight? Don't be angry anymore. I'll get you a couple of dresses, and let's get dressed up and enjoy ourselves at the gala."

"Oh, yes, the gala," Florence said, her eyes twinkling. "I have heard it is the best gala, with a few big shots attending and people from the Royal Sealift Group. Alora, if you can get acquainted with that group, you can establish yourself in Edren County. Then all the wealthy families and powerful people can only envy you."

Tyson laughed. "The Royal Sealift Group is concerned with the big picture, the entire South Edren and North Edren, not Edren County. You can change your fate if you can gain their favor. However, I have heard that the family's eldest daughter is a very arrogant woman. It will be challenging to win her approval. But don't worry; I know everyone in their Project Department. If we run into them later tonight, I can introduce you to them."

Alora nodded. "Thank you, Mister Cox."

Before she left, she told her mother, "Mom, I'll leave Howard under your care. I'll hold Ashton accountable for what he did to you and make him pay."

When Alora was in the car, she could not help but feel troubled. They had disagreements and arguments over the few years she had been with Ashton, but they were mostly happy. He was a gentle and warm individual. However, it appeared that she had misjudged his personality and had failed to see right through his act. She was horrified at the thought of being duped. It was as if everything she had given to the relationship over the years had been for naught.

"I've been in the business field for years and have encountered countless big shots in the industry who were great at disguising themselves. I could tell their true nature at a glance. Tell me, Miss Lowery, was I wrong about Ashton? I've always thought it was my fault that we got a divorce, and I've wronged him—"

Her secretary, Chloe Lowery, was driving, and she sighed when she heard what Alora had said. "You're just too kind and too trusting, Miss Latham. I've known, for a long time, that Ashton is not a good person. It just so happens that he has given his game away, so you can see his true colors now. Besides, it's a fact that your mother and brother have been horribly beaten up, so how can he say he's innocent?"

Alora pursed her lips. "I know. I can't believe he pretended for three years. He had always been very gentle and had never raised his voice at me. I didn't even need to worry about what to eat or wear when I was with him. I can't believe a person like him would attack my mother.

"Also, I know my mother's character better than anybody else. As my company gradually became more successful, my family's status became more elevated, and she became more arrogant and overbearing. I suspect it's because she has done something to offend Ashton that he could not help but attack her…"

Tyson chuckled. "Alora, let me ask you a question. Was it after your divorce that your mother's temper became bad?"

Alora was taken back, shaking her head subconsciously.

Tyson said, "That's right. Her temper had always been this way, so Ashton knew it. He never lost his cool and attacked your mother before the divorce, did he? That means he has been holding all of his resentment for a long time. He was living off you before the divorce, so he had to hold himself back no matter how angry he was. He had nothing to lose now that you were divorced, so he showed his true colors."

His words immediately made her feel enlightened. He was right, and that would make everything make sense. Her mother had always been like that, so Ashton would have known about it for a long time. However, why did he only attack her after the divorce? That was because he had always been holding himself back before that.

Tyson wrapped his arm around Alora's waist again, this time with a confident smile. "He is a poor, uneducated loser. Of course, after marrying a wealthy and beautiful woman like you, he will treat you like a valuable treasure. Everything you have seen before was just a character he played, but now you see who he truly is—a jerk."

Alora clenched her fists. After a while, she punched the car seat. "He has gone way overboard. He could have told me if he was unhappy. What kind of man is he to beat my mother and brother up instead?"

The more she thought about it, the more enraged she became, so she called Ashton.

Meanwhile, Ashton was almost at his destination when he noticed the incoming call. He answered the phone after some thought. "Alora, I did not expect you to call me." Ashton exhaled a sigh. He sounded like he had many things to say but could not.

Alora, on the other hand, was a little stunned.

Why did he expect her to call him? He had beaten her mother and brother to the point where her brother had to be hospitalized. Nonetheless, he stated that he did not anticipate her calling. Did he not feel any remorse for what he did? Did he not realize she was going to question him?

Alora got so angry that she smiled and showed no mercy in her words anymore. "Ashton, we've been together for a few years, but I've never expected you to be a person who's despicable, shameless, nasty, fake, and vicious. I must have been blind to think that you're a good person. I truly regret knowing you and even more that I married you. Getting a divorce from you is the best decision I've ever made!"

Ashton's mouth was agape. Every single word she uttered pierced his heart.

In his memory, no matter how angry Alora became, she never lost her cool and yelled and cursed like a shrew. She was on the verge of going insane then, hurling vicious insults at him and completely ignoring him.

"I've told you before that you can talk to me if you're unhappy or have any requests, and I'll do my best to fulfill your request, for old times' sake. You didn't have to beat my mother and brother up. Why did you beat them up? Do you think my family is easy to mess with?" Alora felt she had gathered all of the evidence because Ashton said nothing. She sneered and demanded, pressuring him to respond, "Go ahead and do it. Please explain. I am eager to hear how you will explain it. If you can't explain to my satisfaction, brace yourself for my wrath and the consequences!"
