"Come here, you jerk!" David ordered.
The 185cm tall, athletically muscled man was standing with a woman who was none other than his girlfriend, Mia. Not only that woman but there were also two men who were always close to David, Darren and Martin.
Ethan, a man in shabby clothes, walked by nodding at the difference in status between them. David was the son of the CEO of Eclipse Enterprises, a company in the technology industry, unlike Ethan, who was just an ordinary student from a small town.
"What's wrong?" asked Ethan, his voice soft with fear in his heart.
"Did you listen to the lecturer? I need you to do our assignment," David replied.
"Why would I do that?" asked Ethan.
David narrowed his eyes. He released his hold on Mia as he walked toward Ethan. His muscular right hand immediately tugged on Ethan's collar, causing the other students besides David's group to move away.
"Cause you'll need money to pay for your tuition, right?" asked David sarcastically.
Ethan didn't answer the question because there was nothing Ethan could argue with David's words. In the end, out of necessity and fear in his heart, Ethan agreed to David's request.
"That's good. Do a good job, and we'll pay you," David said, pushing Ethan's relatively tall and skinny body to the ground.
There was a loud laugh from the athletic man, followed by Mia and his two friends. They walked past Ethan, who slumped listlessly on the corridor floor feeling humiliated, the majority of students on campus already knowing that Ethan was a 'slave worker' for David.
But Ethan didn't care. As long as he could earn money for his work, then he wouldn't respond to people's opinions. One of the women walked up to Ethan while helping him up.
"Did David ask you again?" the woman asked. She was Eleanor, Ethan's high school friend and the woman Ethan liked.
"I guess so. I can't avoid it anyway," said Ethan, sounding desperate to Eleanor.
The 176cm tall, fair-skinned, dusky red-haired, fashionably dressed woman always helped Ethan, no matter the circumstances. She realized David's behaviour had gone too far with Ethan, but no one dared him, considering he was the company owner's son.
"You cannot continue to abuse yourself by agreeing to David's demands," Eleanor explained, feeling compassionate.
"Thank you for your concern, but I'm fine. You don't have to worry about me," Ethan replied.
Ethan's black eyes immediately looked the other way, intending to say goodbye to Eleanor because he had to get to work on the assignment for David and his friends. The man with fair skin, messy black hair, and the simplest appearance among the other students began to walk with quick steps leaving Eleanor behind.
Every time Ethan walked, some students looked at him with a disgusted looks. They thought Ethan was a loser who always lost against the arbitrary David; they hated Ethan because of his attitude and status.
His classes that day had ended early, so Ethan could go straight to his small apartment to start working on David's assignment.
Right when he arrived in front of his apartment, Ethan was surprised by the presence of a large man smoking cigarettes while leaning against Ethan's apartment door.
He looked at Ethan with a serious gaze, his eyes narrowed with sharp eyebrows, and his expression seemed to be holding back anger.
"Why did you come here?" asked the landlord. Ethan called him Mr Jacob.
"Of course, I want to return to my apartment," Ethan replied flatly.
"Back to your apartment? I didn't see you bring the money for the rent you've been owing for three months," Jacob snapped.
Ethan rounded his eyes. He really hadn't paid the rent because he needed money for his studies. Also, the part-time job wasn't making much money.
Ethan didn't have the money to pay the rent this time, not even half of it.
"I-I don't have the money yet, but in the mid-month, I promise I'll pay it," Ethan pleaded, begging Jacob to make it easy for him.
"You know, there's a new student who intends to buy one of the apartments with a one-year term. I put him on hold because we don't have any empty apartment spaces," Jacob replied.
The stocky man threw the cigarette butt on the floor and extinguished it with his foot. He raised his right hand and knocked on the door he was leaning against.
"But if you don't pay it off today, maybe the key to this apartment will go to that new student," Jacob said, reluctantly turning to Ethan, whose face looked pitiable.
"Please, don't throw me out of this apartment. I don't know where else to live," Ethan pleaded. For once, he couldn't accept Jacob's proposal.
"It's none of my business!"
"I'll give you until sunset to find the money to pay the rent. If not, you must leave this place!" said Jacob, speaking to Ethan while pointing at the man.
His loud words made the other residents of the apartment feel uncomfortable. Some came out and saw the dispute; Jacob and Ethan were notorious for fighting over rent.
"As long as you don't get the rent, I'll lock this place up." Jacob took out the spare key, turned his body around and locked the door, so Ethan couldn't get in. He also asked Ethan to return the key to his apartment.
"Go on. Find the money," Jacob ordered.
Unpleasant events continue to happen to Ethan, and in the end, he can't help but look for extra money. Ethan thought of borrowing from a money loan company, but he thought of the big risk when he can't pay it back.
Ethan wandered the streets of the city, hoping that there was someone he could ask for help. One thing that popped into Ethan's head was Eleanor, she had always been kind to him, and maybe she could help him with the rent.
As Ethan was about to walk towards Eleanor's residence, he accidentally saw Eleanor walking lovingly with a man. The two stepped on the other side of the street, and Eleanor didn't notice Ethan's presence in the same place.
The man didn't care. He walked up to Eleanor, who was greeted warmly by the woman. The man with Eleanor appeared to be Marc, an upperclassman on campus.
"Ethan. What are you doing here?" Eleanor asked.
"Elle, there's something I want to talk with you about. Do you mind?" Ethan asked.
Marc, who knew Ethan, immediately pulled Eleanor away from the man. He certainly didn't want to see Eleanor in close contact with Ethan, who was known to have a bad image among students.
"Just speak here, Ethan," Eleanor pleaded.
Ethan was initially reluctant to tell anyone other than Eleanor, but since she asked him to, he had to tell her the truth in front of Marc.
"I'm having trouble paying my rent. I've been in arrears for three months, so I came to ask you a favour. Can you borrow me some money?" Ethan asked, putting his hands together in a pleading gesture.
Marc turned to Eleanor with a shocked look, surprised to see a man asking a woman for a loan, which wasn't appropriate for a man to do.
The man with Eleanor quickly shook his head, indicating that Eleanor should not help Ethan. Marc thought that if Eleanor helped him, Ethan would not grow.
"S-Sorry, Ethan. I don't think I can do that," Eleanor said softly.
Marc suddenly tapped Ethan's right shoulder, and their eyes locked on each other. Ethan, who felt inferior, saw Marc stand up and speak like an authority.
"I don't want to say this, but go back to your small town, Ethan. You won't be able to continue studying in this city," Marc said firmly, telling Ethan to surrender to the situation and go home.
"You cannot rely on others. You have to stand on your own feet," Marc continued.
The two continued walking, leaving Ethan silent with his head bowed. There was no one else he could turn to for help, as Marc's words kept going through Ethan's head.
"W-What should I give up?" asked Ethan, sitting shabbily on a sidewalk chair.
Daylight turned into afternoon, there was only an hour left before sunset, and Ethan had not yet received the rent money as Jacob had ordered.
Three black sedan-type cars stopped right at the roadside. Ethan didn't care because rich people wouldn't have anything to do with poor people like him.
When Ethan tried to ignore them, a woman with shoulder-length black hair and a black suit walked up to Ethan. The scent of expensive perfume could be smelled from the woman's body, even though she wasn't close to Ethan.
"What's wrong? Are you trying to ruin my life too?" asked Ethan, annoyed.
"No, we're not. We came to tell you something," said the woman, standing in the company of a man wearing sunglasses in the same black suit.
"What? I don't think I've ever had to deal with you."
"Mr Kingsley has passed away," explained the woman, handing over a letter sealed with a lead stamp.
"Kingsley? Who is he? What does he have to do with me?" asked Ethan.
"You can open the letter. All your questions are answered in that letter," said the woman.
A desperate Ethan immediately opened it because he had nothing else to do. He read from beginning to end, and every paragraph written made Ethan's heart beat fast.
His eyes were wide open; reading the last paragraph of the letter, you could say this letter was a letter of inheritance given by a man named Kingsley to Ethan.
"I don't understand. I don't even know Kingsley, and he's already made me the heir?" asked Ethan, confused.
"Come with us to the Kingsley residence. Madam Sara will explain it to you."
Ethan was certainly suspicious of them, strangers who suddenly asked him to go along. The dark-haired man had heard the news about human trafficking cases. Perhaps in the back of his mind, what they were about to do was part of a human trafficking plan."I-I'm not going. Maybe you have the wrong person; there are many people named Ethan in this world," Ethan explained, stumbling while trying to walk slowly away. After seeing an opportunity, Ethan ran quickly away from the place, which was suddenly chased by them. Unlike the woman who seemed silent while sitting on a sidewalk chair, the men in black suits ran quite fast.Ethan didn't run out of ideas; he entered a narrow alley that only he knew. According to Ethan, the men in black suits would not pass through this dirty, muddy, smelly alley. So, Ethan thought he was safe from them. The alley connected to the other side of the apartment block where Ethan lived. When the young man made it out with his breath ragged from running fast, he
The furniture inside the Kingsley residence was much more luxurious than it looked outside. Ethan walked in with Astrid, while Sara and the rest of the family entered earlier than Ethan.Ethan, who had never seen such luxury, was silent, pensive, and amazed. He still didn't expect to live in a place like this, different from his small apartment. They led Ethan into the living room, between rows of long, soft sofas. Sara was seen sitting on one of the single sofas there. Not only her but four people were sitting on the long sofa, two boys and two girls."Astrid," Sara called, her voice soft."Yes, Madame?" said Astrid, walking over politely."Bring Finnley here," Sara requested.Astrid nodded. The woman who had been accompanying Ethan was now seen walking away from him toward the second floor of this residence. Ethan continued to stare at the woman from a distance."Astrid is calling Mr. Finnley. He's Mr. Kingsley's lawyer," Sara replied.Ethan smiled awkwardly. He was nervous about be
"Is there anything you want to ask?" asked Finnley. He had already packed his files into his black suitcase, planning to leave since the discussion on inheritance rights was over. Finnley, who had worked as Kingsley's lawyer for ten years, was satisfied and relaxed."If no one has any questions, I'll leave," Finnley replied. The man began to stand up from his seat on the sofa, followed by Astrid, who was about to escort him away. Seeing him as the leader in this place confused Ethan about where to start. The young man also stood up and walked over to Finnley outside the Kingsley residence. Finnley and Astrid were surprised when Ethan called him back."What is it, Ethan? Or should I start calling you Young Master?" asked Finnley jokingly."You know, I didn't come from a rich family before. I don't know how to run a company and manage all this wealth," replied Ethan, confused."Then you need the best teacher who can teach you. A teacher who has experience with companies and financial ma
***The next day.Ethan returned to his campus as if nothing had happened. He came out with the door opened by one of his bodyguards. Astrid also accompanied Ethan by sitting in the front seat close to the driver."You don't have to wait for me," Ethan said, speaking through the open car window on the driver's side."But what about your safety?" asked Astrid, worried."Haha, am I really going to war? I'll be fine. It's just college," Ethan replied, laughing softly when he saw Astrid's anxious face.At first, Astrid insisted on accompanying Ethan, even when he was on campus. However, Ethan would feel limited in his activities and attract too much attention from the rest of the students."My class will end at three in the afternoon. You can come at that time to pick me up," Ethan explained, reluctant to have them follow him around campus."Alright. Take care of yourself, Young Master," Astrid pleaded.Ethan smiled broadly. Astrid said goodbye to Ethan, the car window closed, and the bla
***In the evening.Ethan continued to read the books Finnley provided for him, many of them explaining entrepreneurship and companies. In addition to the college assignments he had to do, he also had bigger responsibilities than in college. The door to Ethan's office was knocked softly. The sound of the knock was clearly heard by Ethan's ears until he invited the guest to come in.The wooden door opened, revealing the late-night visitor was Hannah. She arrived in white pajamas with abstract patterns, her gray-white hair loose and untied."Oh, Hannah. Do you need anything?" asked Ethan, marking the last page of the book he was reading to continue."I want to talk about what happened on campus," Hannah replied, still standing in the open doorway."Why? Are you worried they'll tease you because you chose to save me?" asked Ethan, standing up from his cushioned chair and walking over to the woman."No, I'm not. I'm just worried about your mental state. I'm afraid you're depressed and str
Feeling humiliated by Ethan, Sara turned around quickly and left Ethan's office without saying goodbye. Her body disappeared after she passed through the wooden door of Ethan's room. Ethan took a deep breath. He felt that with this situation, his burden as the Kingsley heir would be even heavier and more difficult. However, Ethan couldn't complain. He wanted this new life, and he had to accept it with its consequences. Looking at the clock on the wall, it was 9pm, a sign for Ethan to start resting his body. He closed the book he was reading and would resume it the next day. He walked away from his desk to leave the room. Just as Ethan was outside about to lock the door using his fingerprint, he was shocked by a rough tug from a man who was waiting for him there. Ethan looked back; he was Luke Kingsley, Sara's second son. Luke roughly grabbed Ethan by the collar and slammed Ethan's body against the wall. "How dare you make my mom cry!" snapped Luke. Ethan squinted with his eyebrow
*** The next day. Today, Ethan had no classes scheduled. However, his activities were quite busy today. He was already waiting for Finnley's arrival in neat clothes on the first floor. Ethan planned to participate in a seminar related to corporate leadership at Eclipse Enterprises. He disguised himself as an ordinary student with the name tag provided by Finnley. Ethan certainly didn't want people to know that he was the CEO of Kingsley Enterprises. It would only cause his learning to be disrupted. Ethan occasionally turned his head to the third floor. That morning, he had yet to meet any of Sara's family. He worried that his relationship with them would worsen due to last night's dispute. As the front door opened, Astrid arrived with Finnley at her side. The woman smiled as she invited Ethan to go immediately. "You came as a student, not the Kingsley heir," Astrid said, handing Ethan a name tag to wear. "How many people are attending the event?" Ethan asked. "It's about 20 pe
Ethan and Astrid's lift doors opened, in contrast to the lift to Ethan's left, which hadn't opened yet. Ethan saw the line of seminar attendees begin to move away. Ethan and Astrid tried to catch up to them quickly. The man tried to hide by keeping his head down. He was sure that he saw Eleanor's presence in this place. She smiled, wearing a black blazer suit the same colour as Marc's suit. But of the eighteen people attending the seminar, most were wearing formal black suits. Unwilling to take any risk, he kept his head down and noted what the seminar guide explained."This is the human resources manager's room. Supervising, monitoring, and recruiting new employees who fulfil the company's specifications. If you apply for a job here, you will meet the HR department," the seminar guide replied, smiling as he introduced the chief HR manager to the seminar participants. The man explained that the fifth floor contains rooms occupied by functional officers in the company, starting from th
Ethan re-entered the KG Entertainment office, watched by the employees until Ethan went into an elevator. Ethan was already thinking about what he wanted to do to Eve. The evidence he got helped threaten Eve so that she would confess. It didn't take long for Ethan to reach the floor where the directors worked. He clearly saw Eve's office; the man stepped slowly toward the room and opened it.Hannah didn't seem to be holding any files in her hands. Eve was still behind her desk, while the man was already sitting on the chair before Eve's desk. The door opened, and Hannah's eyes snapped open to see Ethan had arrived alone."How was it?" asked Hannah, curious."Unfortunately, I got information that might affect someone's position in this building," Ethan said, walking over to Eve, who looked confused and scared. The man who had been sitting on a chair before Eve's desk started to stand up and gave the chair to Ethan. Ethan turned his head sharply and
Eve, the finance director of KG Entertainment, was solely responsible for the company's finances. She felt awkward when Ethan questioned her about the financial deficit, something the directors had discussed at the meeting."These few months, we've been focusing a lot on finding idol talents. Training them before they enter the entertainment industry requires a lot of money," Eve replied."Such as accommodation, clothing, choreography instructors, and so on. We allocate many company funds to those sectors," Eve continued."I understand what you are doing. However, I don't fully trust you until I get your written report," Ethan said."What report?" asked Eve.Ethan walked closer to Eve until he was standing right before her face, "The first quarter financial report and last month's expense report."Eve looked speechless. She turned around, walking over to her computer to see if the files were on her computer or still on her staff computer. Et
The distance between KG Aviation and KG Entertainment was quite long, especially since Ethan was leaving with Hannah from a restaurant near the beach. That man would take over the checks at KG Entertainment right after Astrid and Finnley failed to do so."Are you sure you'll show up as their CEO this time?" asked Hannah."Didn't you keep forcing me to reveal myself quickly? Why also now you look quite hesitant?" asked Ethan.Hannah bowed her head. Her pure heart kept thinking of the bad impact Ethan would get from his current decision. She didn't want this crucial moment to disturb Ethan's mind. The CEO position is indeed quite prestigious; many people want it. However, the higher and more respectable a person's position in the company, then there is tremendous pressure on the CEO about his ability to run the company."I'm just confirming your seriousness, nothing more," Hannah said."Haha, I've already made up my mind, which means I'm ready
***"I have to admit KG Airline's reputation has started to fall compared to before," Hannah replied.Ethan and Hannah were at a restaurant by the sea, and Ethan's eyes could see the waves lapping in rhythm as they ate their lunch. Even though the two were eating together, Hannah kept the conversation about KG Aviation open."I never knew about KG Aviation before, so I cannot say much," Ethan said.As the two were enjoying their seafood meal, Ethan's attention was drawn towards the restaurant entrance where a group of casually dressed women entered. Hannah, who was sitting next to Ethan, noticed the changed look in the young man's eyes.Hannah followed his eyes and to her surprise she saw her college friends in the same restaurant. The woman before Ethan waved a hand, calling out to them which spontaneously shocked Ethan."They're your friends?" Ethan asked.Hannah smiled with her eyes fixed on the five friends, "Yeah. They're my coll
"What does he mean he fired me?" asked the financial director, pointing at Ethan, who stood before him. "It means you should start packing your bags from here," Hannah replied. Both of Hannah's hands continued to hold KG Aviation's first quarter financial report file. Although she could not check it completely, there were more losses than income. She could tell because the table marked the loss section with a red block. "Can you explain the reason for the losses incurred during the first quarter?" Hannah asked. The woman put the financial report on the table, telling the finance director's man to take a look on his own. The man started to get up and picked up the report, his eyes able to see the losses. "We could not avoid the loss in the first quarter. Several things contributed to the loss, including decreased passenger interest in Kingsley Airlines," the man said. "There are many new competitors in the aviation sector that have sprung up. The meeting below is also intended to
From a distance, Ethan, driving behind the wheel, clearly saw the KG Aviation office. The important event organized by the company's director attracted a lot of attention from nearby people, whether they were invited or not."Here we are," Ethan said.He drove steadily, entering the company parking lot with all eyes on Hannah. She was certainly attractive today, plus she was the daughter of the Kingsleys."They're watching you," Ethan replied, releasing the seatbelt just as his car parked."I know," Hannah said. The two stepped out of the car, with Ethan walking toward Hannah. In that place, quite a lot of people arrived along with their personal bodyguards. Some even brought assistants to write down the meeting records.Hannah entered the KG Aviation office gracefully through the right side door. Hannah's arrival surprised the company, especially the Board of Directors, who had not expected the company owner's family to attend such a small event."Good afternoon, Miss Hannah," greete
***The next day.Ethan packed up the books he had been using and arranged them neatly on the bookshelf in his study. Astrid knocked on the room door where Ethan worked. The woman arrived along with Finnley. Ethan ordered the person behind the door to enter; his eyes snapped open at the arrival of Astrid and Finnley in the same room."Are you two ready to go to KG Entertainment?" asked Ethan, walking over to the front of his desk, which now looked empty, with only a few documents, laptops, and other office tools.Astrid was surprised at how clean Ethan's desk was, unlike yesterday, where piles of books about entrepreneurs and companies were neatly arranged for Ethan to study."Why are you putting those books back into the bookshelves?" asked Astrid."I don't have time to read those books. Studying them without experiencing them first-hand would make my head fuzzy," Ethan replied, standing up as he leaned against his desk."So, you'd rather start living the life of a CEO than learn in
The receptionist who greeted Ethan was confused by the man's purpose. She didn't answer Ethan's question and instead called her friends, naturally asking them to help her answer Ethan's question. "KG Entertainment is a company engaged in the music, esports, and movie industries. What exactly are you looking for here? Do you have any friends who work here or what?" asked the receptionist, beginning to grow suspicious of Ethan's demeanor, different from the previous guests who had come here. "Is that so, huh? Can you show me?" asked Ethan, looking into the eyes of the woman standing before him. She seemed to be talking to her partner again, a scared and strange expression on her face. One of the employees was seen walking out of the reception desk to go to the security guard at the entrance. The woman said that Ethan was suspicious, so she asked the security guards to secure the man. In the end, two security guards did what the woman wanted. "Sir. I ask you to come with us," said o
Their perception of Ethan changed from a poor student who always made trouble to a rich student with the same status as the others. It made Ethan's heart happy; at least the next college life would be peaceful."Ethan?"The man was startled by the quiet voice of someone behind his back, a female voice that sounded familiar to the young man's ears. Out of curiosity, the man slowly began to turn his head to look at her."Mia?" greeted Ethan, smiling."What are you doing here? Are you going to apply for the agreement again?" asked Mia, speaking sarcastically because she disliked Ethan's presence on this campus, just like David."No, I'm not. I just discussed my tuition payment with them," said Ethan, flat and simple as he pointed at the finance staff behind the payment desk barrier."HAHA! You know, they must be sick of you being here. I haven't even made a deal with them yet, considering my family is wealthy," Mia said, walking over while jostling Ethan's body to make him move away from
