Chapter 3: The Meeting

Robert's night which began with a glimpse of hope as he satisfied himself with his billionaire dream had now ended with him behind bars. His boss's instructions were adhered to with utmost seriousness and urgency, landing Robert in jail for the very first time in his life.

What did he do to deserve all of this? He kept wondering to himself inside the police cell. Was it a crime to love someone and get married to her? Although he had experienced a lot from the Richards, Sophia's parents, those were nothing compared to what he had just experienced with his wife.

“She's my fucking wife for God's sake,” He said out, hitting his first on the beach he sat on as the thoughts came back to him, “Why would she do this to me?” He sobbed and cried. The feeling of betrayal mixed with anger made his heart even more shattered than the bottle he dropped.

After several rounds of thought here and there, he got an idea to make a call. He thought to call his mother-in-law, sure she would ease up on him and reprimand her daughter once he told her what had just happened. He called to the officer he could see.

“Officer!” He called out and the man answered him, demanding the reason for his call.

“Please can I use your phone to make a call?” He asked.

The officer laughed at him, wondering who he had to call.

“You mad dog, who do you have to call? Your life is finished and it ends here.” The man mocked him.

He pleaded on and on until the man got tired of him and decided to give him his phone to make his call.

“Here, make your bloody call and stop pestering my life. Am trying to have some sleep.”

Robert collected the phone and called Linda Richard, his mother-in-law. She picked up after several attempts, her tone telling of how fast asleep she was.

“Hello, Mum. It's me, Robert.” He said to her hastenly not wanting to waste any time or airtime.

“And why would you be calling me at this time of the night you fool?” She answered him angrily. He just interrupted her restful sleep.

Robert stammered apologizing to her and then went straight to the matter at hand.

“Am in jail right now because I caught Sophia cheating on me…” He continued and narrated everything to her.

Linda showed some levels of concern, telling him to wait out the night, and by morning they would come and see him. He was quite surprised to hear those words from his tormentor mother-in-law who usually sees it fit to rejoice at everything bad that befalls him.

…………………………………

By morning, Linda and her husband, Philip Richard, arrived to see Robert as she had promised. They were in the interrogation room and asked that Robert be brought to them.

Robert was brought in and made to sit opposite his in-laws on the same table, his hands still cuffed.

“Why are you still cuffing my hands, I’m with my in-laws?” She asked the officer.

The officer who stood beside him ordered him to keep quiet,

“Shut your stinking mouth.” He said to him.

His mother-in-law took over the conversation,

“Alright, Robert. Tell us again what happened?” She asked him.

Robert traveled his attention away from the police officer to his mother-in-law.

“I went to serve drink to a client who lodged at our most expensive suite, and when I came into the room, I found out that Sophia was cheating on me with the client. I tr—” He explained but was interrupted.

“Wait, did you say with a client who lodged at your most expensive suite?” She asked him and he affirmed, she then asked her husband, “Honey, how much does that suite cost again? We've been there several times right?”

Her husband answered her,

“500k, yeah. We did our last romantic weekend there two months back.”

She returned to him again and began her usual character,

“So, you caught our daughter, the daughter of a multi-millionaire, in the most expensive suite of the most expensive hotel in this city with a wealthy man, and you call that cheating on you?” She asked him in unbelieve.

Robert was shocked to hear her say such words, these were the same words his wife had said to him at the hotel just a few hours ago and her mother was repeating the same.

“Do you support your daughter's infidelity?” He asked Linda rudely.

The answer to his rude question came with a rude slap from Philip.

“How dare you talk to her like that?” Philip got up from his seat, furious at the man who had just insulted his wife and his daughter. He gave him another slap for insulting his daughter's dignity, “You dare to insult my daughter?”

Linda looked at him with an evil eye and said,

“You ungrateful bastard, we give you everything and what do you do? Insult our family.” She shook her head and then gave an unlawful instruction to the police officer, “Beat him up.”

The officer got to the job he was paid to do in the room, beating up Robert till he bled.

While at it, the door opened and Sophia walked in with the same man. The officer halted his duty at the signal from Linda, leaving Robert agonizing in pain.

“Look at the shame you've brought to this family, Sophia” Her mother said to her, blaming her for the Robert problem they had to deal with, “If only you'd listened to us and not married this fool.”

Sophia looked guilty and ashamed at her mother's words and she quickly apologized to her.

“Am sorry, Mum. I was young and foolish, I didn't know I was marrying a bigger fool.” She apologized and then added, “But am making it right now, Mum. Meet Michael Noel, he is a billionaire and the founder of the Noel Inc.” She said to her parents excited and jumping at her new score.

Her parents' eyes opened wide in excitement, finally, their daughter had made the right choice and had restored honor back to their family. They got up to greet their daughter's new man.

“Oh, Michael. You're welcome to our family, great man.” Philip shook his hand, welcoming him as the newest member of their family and the replacement for the liability they called a son-in-law.

“Thank you, sir. Am honored.” Michael replied back.

Linda hugged him,

“I wonder why my daughter didn't meet you earlier before bringing this embodiment of shame to our family.” She said to him.

“Now she has and we can fix that now.” Michael, a true gentleman, rich and cultured, answered her.

Once they were done, they returned their attention back to Robert who laid his head on the table, exhausted from the pains inflicted on him by the rogue police officer, as he watched this unholy behavior amongst his tormentors.

“Here's what is going to happen with you, Robert.” Sophia said to her husband, “Michael, out of his generosity and kindness of his heart, has decided to drop the charges on you once you signed these papers.” She laid the papers before him and gave him a pen.
