Sophia had picked up the ring that fell from Robert's pocket and showed it to her parents, Robert was too weak to protest or say anything to them. The Richards inspected the ring over and over again, realizing to whom it belonged, they questioned.
“How did you gain possession of the Williams family heirloom?” Their question fell on deaf ears, Robert couldn't even hear a word they were saying.“Get him up, he has to answer us?” Philip instructed the officer and he raised Robert to face his father-in-law and provide the answers they needed. However, Robert was just a body of weight with little life left in him.“Do you think he could be a member of the family? After all, his name is William.” Linda asked her husband.“He is no member of any family, he has no family whatsoever. I've been married to him for four years, I know everything there is to know about this piece of shit.” Sophia answered her mother, clearing the notion of Robert being connected to the William Family even though he had William as his last name.“Sophia is right,” Philip said as he continued to inspect the ring, “Mr. William has no living son nor grandson, no living child at all. Robert can't possibly be anything related to the family.”“How then did he get the ring?” Linda asked again, trying her best to be certain about their conclusion on the matter.Sophia jumped at the question immediately,“How else do you think? He stole it of course. That shouldn't be surprising, poor people steal rich people's things.” “Alright, officer,” Michael called on the officer holding Robert and delivered to him an instruction, “Take him to the torture room and question him about the ring until he speaks the truth.”“Yes, sir.” The officer answered and dragged Robert away to the interrogation room. The new formation of the Richards family celebrated their success in ending Robert's marriage to their daughter. “We should return the ring to Mr. William. I am sure he would reward us for it.” Linda said to her husband. They left the precinct and headed straight for the William Estate to return the ring.……………………………..A few hours later, Robert woke up and realized he was chained to a chain inside a dungeon-like cell. He had regained his strength to some level, at least he could shout.“Help! Officer! Set me free!” He screamed hoping to draw the attention of someone who would unchain him and set him free.He went on and on, calling and shouting, and finally, someone answered him. The footsteps of the man whose shadow Robert could see echoed through the hall. One step after the other, bit by bit, the man came closer. Suddenly, the echoed sounds of the footsteps multiplied, revealing to Robert that whoever it was, there were two of them. Robert listened on as the footsteps came closer till they got to the door and opened it. The iron door to the dungeon-like cell creaked open and two men walked in. The dim light in the cell made it difficult for Robert to tell who they were but once they were settled, the last man flipped the switch and turned on the lights. It was the same officer who had beaten him to unconsciousness, he came in with this almost scary-looking man who was dressed in all black with a black hat on. The officer introduced the man to Robert.“Robert William, meet Nobody. Nobody specializes in bringing out the truth in everybody and his reputation precedes him.”Nobody removed his hat, laid it neatly on the table, raised up his briefcase, and dropped it also on the table. Robert looked in shock, no idea why he was here and what any of these was all about.“Officer, why am I here? I did as they asked, what else do you want from me?” He asked pitifully.“Well, Mr. Robert, you are about to find out why you are here,” the mysterious Nobody said to him, cracking his knuckles to wear his black gloves.“Please, sir. I am innocent of any crime.” Robert begged but no one was listening to him, “Okay, just tell me what I'm accused of and I will prove my innocence.” He begged even more.“No one cares about your innocence, Robert. All I care about is the truth and as you heard, Nobody makes everybody tell the truth.” The mysterious Nobody said to him.Robert shivered where he sat as Nobody approached him.“What truth is that, sir? I don't know what you're talking about.”Nobody smiled and lifted Robert's head by his jaw, looking him in the eyes he said,“Now let's get started. Here's the rule of engagement, just one rule. I ask you answer, you lie I break a bone. You have 206 bones in your skinny lanky body.”“Please, sir. I promise to tell the truth, just ask me.” Robert said, crying at the seriousness of the man's threat.“Good boy,” Nobody said to him, slapping his cheek gently, “Now, how did you steal the Williams family heirloom?” He asked.Robert took a moment to think, he couldn't understand one thing the man had just said to him.“Family heirloom? What family heirloom?” He asked in surprise to Nobody's question.Nobody wasn't satisfied with Robert's answer, and he hit him on his rib cage with a heavy punch causing Robert to cough out blood.“I told you, you lie I break a bone. One down 205 more to go.” He said to Robert.Robert continued coughing, gasping for breath amidst the cough. Within himself with the little consciousness he had, he wondered why he was being tortured, what offense he committed and why is he being brutally interrogation for something he knew nothing about. His confusion and his ignorance had nothing to do with Nobody's job, he was paid to deliver results and not to be sentimental with Robert's feelings.“Now, let's go again and this time be truthful.” Nobody said to Robert, “Tell me how you stole the Williams family heirloom.”Robert struggled to get himself to concentrate, hoping to somehow find an answer to Nobody's question but he didn't even understand anything about what he was being interrogated about. He tried to say what he could,“I don't know—” Before he could complete his statement, the door creaked open again and the officer who brought in Nobody came in on them.He excused Nobody and whispered some words into his ear. After their moment of whispering, he said to Robert.“I don't know who you are but the police chief has ordered me to bring you to him.” The officer said to Robert. The officer took Robert to the office of the police chief accompanied by Nobody. When they got there, the police chief welcomed him and began questioning him.“You're welcome, Robert.” He said to him as they helped him get seated, “I just want to ask you a few questions quickly. First, who are you?” He asked Robert.Robert wondered why the question of his identity, the police ought to have that information by now. But he answered anyway, summoning strength from within.“I am Robert William. I grew up in this city as an orphan and got married to Sophia Richard before our recent tragic divorce.” He answered the chief. The thought of how Sophia treated him made him drop tears as he said the words.“It's alright, Robert,” the police chief consoled him and went on to his next question, “How did you come across this ring?” He brought out the ring that fell off Robert's pocket and presented it to him.On seeing the ring, Robert was shocked and quickly retrieved it from the police chief. The
Robert's eyes opened in shock at the salutations of the police chief and his officers, but even more shocking to him was the voice he heard from the phone who said he was on his way. Questions began flooding his mind faster than he could think of them. Why are they saluting me? What's going on here? Who is coming? He said I was the one, which one? Who am I? He asked the police chief just one question out of the innumerable questions flowing through his mind.“This doesn't look like trouble but am I in trouble?”“Oh no. No sir.” The police chief answered. The fact that he addressed Robert as sir all of a sudden, made Robert wonder about the gravity of the situation.“Why are you addressing me as sir, sir?” He asked the police chief.“Don't worry, sir. Everything will be explained to you soon but I am not the right person to do that.” The police chief answered him.Robert stayed there with him, continuing to think about the events all leading up to this present moment, nothing made sen
The convoy drove through the city and entered a private road where they drove for a few minutes and finally arrived at a very large estate property. The entire estate was lit up, shining bring. Every structure in it was a testament to luxury and opulence. They drove through the estate and finally stopped inside the compound of a huge mansion. The guards came down and opened the doors for them to come out, and Robert's sights remained wide open in disbelief. How is this place even real? He asked himself. He had seen beautiful places, especially in movies and magazines but nothing of this such has he ever seen.Dozens of armed security guards were littered all over the mansion and the estate. As they came down, everyone bowed to him as he walked past them, his smiles were off this world. In no time, he had transitioned from a world where everyone insulted and abused him to a world where everyone bowed to him, that was only a reality in his dreams. But what he was experiencing now made h
You see, my child. Your father handled the business operations of the family and controlled the empire, he was the sole heir to the Williams Empire and when he died, the family lost its heir. But thank God that you're found, I'm getting old and I need to retire which is why you'll have to take over the operations and control of the empire as the new heir.” Robert listened attentively but was overwhelmed by the part of him taking over as the new heir, what does he know, he has no experience and no degrees to qualify him for such a task. This triggered fear in him as he wondered the magnitude of the task.“Grandfather, I am not in any way or form qualified for any of these. I am a mere hotel attendant.” He cried out immediately to his grandfather, fearing his incompetence for the job.His grandfather looked at him and smiled, “Of course, I know that, my child. You'll undergo a three-month training program which will be designed to bring you up to speed with the best professionals in t
For the first time in his life, Robert actually felt good about himself. He looked down, again at the debit card sitting in his lap so carelessly and breathed deeply. Happiness was evidently written all over his face. His bright, blue eyes beamed in delight, illuminating his dark skin as he smiled heartily. "I know it has been a long and incredibly tasking day for you, my child. So I believe it is necessary that you get some rest." His grandfather proposed in concern. And he was right. Robert was way beyond tired, after all the torturing he had encountered in the cell, he really needed to get some rest."I could mistake you for a mind reading shaman, grandfather." His chuckles filled the room as he alighted from his seat. "I am really tired.""Funny boy. You're just like your father, cracking jokes no matter what the situation at hand might be." The smile on Jude's face melted in to a long, sad expression as memories of his late son came to mind. His eyes searched the place immediatel
Robert stopped for a moment and sighed gently. Leaving Raymond in perplex and concern over the change of countenance of the young master, who was amazed just moments ago."Why? Is anything wrong, young master?" Raymond asked, standing at ease behind Robert."Well, it's nothing. I just thought of The Richards. They were the ones who returned the ring to you, right?" He asked, almost like he didn't know the answer already."Well, yes sir. They did. What about them?" Raymond asked with a sudden interest pique about the topic, as he recalled that Robert had asked that they be invited to his welcome party as well."Nothing serious actually. I just want them at the welcome party this weekend. Do not forget to send them a special invitation, naming them as my special guests." Robert emphasized once more."Okay sir. Everything will be done according to your command." Raymond replied in confirmation. " Shall we continue to your room, young master? I'm sure you still need some rest."Robert nod
Robert laid there, still with his eyes fixed to the ceiling for few minutes. He had to digest everything he was seeing and actually believe it was all his. It was just unbelievable to him how fast the table turned in his favour. He stood up after a while, walking around the large room, admiring everything in it. He went into the restroom and his eyes lit up at its wonderful setting. The door was made of glass, that couldn't be looked through from the outside. Inside, there was a huge mirror that could be seen when one just walked in, the toilet seat sat at the other side of the room, with a wash bowl just close by. A little door there opened up to a neatly arranged bathroom with a nice shower. Far from the shower laid an extremely huge bathtub, almost the size of a jacuzzi. Robert smiled in disbelief, yet happiness as he walked back out. There, he noticed a bit box fixed to the wall, which he had missed when he first came in and inside it, were warm, cozy towels. Does this just get be
Robert followed behind Raymond without a word till they got to the stairs. It was dark outside already and the house was at ease and generally quiet."Is it downstairs? The dinning room?" Robert asked almost impatiently. He was famished after his long rest."No, sir. Here we are." Raymond replied, pointing patiently at the first door at the other side of the staircase. "Ah, finally. I'm famished." He chuckled lightly as he talked, walking past Raymond into the room. His grandfather, Jude sat at the far end of the table waiting. "You're finally here, my child." He said upon looking up and seeing Robert."Good evening, grandfather." He greeted as he walked towards the table. The dinning room was spacious, with cozy looking furniture. There was a big dinning table in the middle of about eight chairs and Robert wondered if his grandfather usually ate there all alone."Good evening, my child. I hope you had a good rest." Jude asked between smiles, as he observed Robert's face."Yes, gran
"Now listen to me, you creep. You are just bluffing and..." The call ended before he could say anything else. He grunted in anger and walked back to where he was before. Raymond had alerted the police officers inside, and a chase had began to get Olivia. Robert walked back to them, breathing heavily."The police are after her." He tried to catch his breath."I know, sir. Let's meet with the detectives at once. I got everything she said on tape.""Yes!" Roberts eyes lit up. "Let's go, then." The two men rushed in back in to the building. Fransisco followed slowly behind them, but when he saw that they were really ahead of him, and wouldn't notice if he wasn't with them, he moved back. He looked from side to side as he rushed out of the premises. Meanwhile, many policemen ran out of the building like a colony of ants, each person dispersing themselves into different cars. Soon, the cars were out of sight. Robert walked out of the building with Raymond beside him. "It's a good thing you
The detective squinted as he looked at his colleague. He turned back to Robert with a stern face before speaking."That is a serious accusation, sir. Are you sure about what you are saying?""Sure? Not exactly. But I really suspect that they might have had something to do with this. About Michael, I do not know how involved he might be. But Sophia? She even went to Juliet's house once to talk bad about me.""And how do you know that?""I saw her leave the house. I tried to ask her why she had come but she ignored me, and left hurriedly. Also, Juliet told me about it when I went in.""Hmm..." He sighed softly as he wrote something in his notebook. "And why would this Sophia want to talk bad about you to your girlfriend?""Sophia and I used to be married. But we got a divorce right before I met my grandfather. After that, she tried had to get back in to my life, but I refused. I think that made her very angry because she said questionable things after, things I didn't take serious.""Sh
"He will be down here in a bit. We should wait in the car, so we can leave immediately he gets here." Raymond announced as he walked down the stairs. Robert immediately opened the door and walked out on hearing that. "Umm... Ryan." He called as he walked towards the car. "Some people will be here later today to do some fixing in here, let them in. They will show you their ID cards first.""Yes, sir." Ryan nodded. He left as soon as Robert waved him off."Sir..." Raymond called hesitantly. "Please, I need to speak with you.""What is this about, Raymond? You know this isn't the time for conversations that are not...""It is very important, sir.""Alright." He sighed and got in to the car. Raymond walked to the other side and got in as well. "What is it?""It's about Fransisco." He paused and swallowed hard. "I... I heard him in his room." Robert squinted with concentration. He didn't trust Fransisco one bit and with the way Raymond was speaking, he was ready to hear the worst."What
Robert didn't sleep the whole night. His eyes were open, fixed to the ceiling and filled with tears in his grandfather's room. It felt like the night would never end, like the torture and pain he was feeling would never end as well. Raymond knocked on the door several times to find out if he was alright, but he asked him to leave every single time. Just as his eyes were beginning to flutter with drowsiness, a bright light pierced through the window. He got off the couch immediately and headed to his room. There, he had a quick change of clothes before heading down to meet Raymond, and of course, Fransisco."Good morning, sir." Raymond said as soon as he saw him walking down the stairs. There was a smile on his face. One that Robert could not fathom at first. "Are you okay?""I'm fine." He said sharply with very steady eyes. He didn't seem like someone who had sobbed all night, maybe because he was very good at hiding his feelings. "We need to go to the station now.""But you've not h
"Gone? Gone?" She asked, totally calm. She was dazed for a moment. She stood still with tears running down her cheeks. "What is gone? What does that even mean?" She managed to murmer."I don't even know what happened. I met the policemen on my way to the house, and I saw her. I saw her right there being placed on the stretcher. And she wasn't moving."She shot an angry eye at him as he tried to explain what he had seen. He stopped immediately and looked down. It was clear that all he was saying didn't matter to her at this point. She didn't want to hear anything."What did you do to my sister, Robert? What did you do to her?" She yelled."No, no. What are saying? I do not know what exactly happened to her. But I will make sure they pay dearly for it.""You, liar. What did she ever do to you? She didn't deserve this. She didn't!" Mary yelled, crying bitterly. She didn't mind the staring eyes that looked in her direction. She just wanted to know why this had to happen to her sister. "
"Police station? What for?" She asked with wide eyes. He couldn't see her but he could already tell the expression on her face. And that was because she sounded just as confused as she looked. "What does that have to do with my sister, Robert? Where is my sister?""I'm really sorry, Mary." He said with a shaky voice. He could no longer contain the hurt he felt. "They don't really know what happened to her, but....""But what?" She interrupted sharply with tears dancing freely in her eyes, waiting gor the perfect opportunity to pour out. She heard what he was saying, but she did not understand. She did not want to understand if it was really what she was thinking. "What are you talking about, Robert? Where the hell is my sister?""Just meet me at the station now." He ended the call immediately. He couldn't mutter the courage to tell her that Juliet was found dead just minutes ago. He took a deep, shaky breath and nodded at the police officer. "I'll be at the station."Immediately after
As he drove closer, he could see bright lights in a distance. He squinted hard to see exactly where the lights were coming from, but he couldn't see clearly. He sped up and was surprised to see police vehicles littered all over the place. He parked his car close by and looked on. He could see some officers placing barricade tapes around that particular area. Thoughts started to fly once more in his mind, and for a moment, his throat tightened. "No, no. Don't overthink anything, Robert." He said to himself and took a deep breath. He got out of the car, and walked quickly towards the area. As he got closer, he thought he recognised the car that was parked on the side of the road. He shook his head in disbelief and got even nearer to the scene. But before he could go past the barricade tapes, he was stopped by one of the officers."You can't come here, sir." The officer said roughly, his hand against Robert's chest in a light manner."What is going on here?" He asked in confusion, stari
About two hours after Juliet left the office, Robert decided to do same. Juliet suddenly came to his mind. "Isn't she home yet?" He said under his breath. "Why hasn't she called yet?" He picked up his phone from the table and called her immediately. The first time, there was no response. He called again, and still, there was no response. "Well, I guess she's busy. I'll just call when I get home." He stood up and arranged all the documents, piling each on top of the other. He tucked everything under his arm and headed to the car."Good evening sir." The security guard hailed from his duty post."Yes, good evening." He answered before placing the documents in the back seat of the car. He closed the car door and walked closer to the young man. "Umm... Tomorrow, some men will be here to do a few checks and fixings in the building. Do let them in, alright?""Yes sir.""Alright then. Have a good night." He nodded and walked to the car. In no time, he sped off. As he drove down the street t
It was 5pm now. The once blue sky was slowly getting darker. Little golden strips beatified the now grey like clouds. Juliet had a pile of documents in front of her and was working on them with utmost focus. Robert sat right opposite her, doing the same. His eyes suddenly looked in the direction of the glass wall, and then, at Juliet. He stared at her for a moment. He agreed with himself one more time that she was indeed the most beautiful woman he had ever set his eyes on. It felt like time stopped during those few moments, and he was lost in the beauty he was beholding."What are you looking at, Mister?" She asked in a serious tone. Her eyes, pinned on the papers in front of her. Robert shook his head with a soft smile, and peered down at his watch."You should get going, honey. It's past five.""Oh!" She exclaimed calmly and placed the pen in her hand on the table. She looked up and met his eyes. "You really want me to go?""If there was an alternative at this point, then I would
