Chapter 7: The Salute!

The officer took Robert to the office of the police chief accompanied by Nobody. When they got there, the police chief welcomed him and began questioning him.

“You're welcome, Robert.” He said to him as they helped him get seated, “I just want to ask you a few questions quickly. First, who are you?” He asked Robert.

Robert wondered why the question of his identity, the police ought to have that information by now. But he answered anyway, summoning strength from within.

“I am Robert William. I grew up in this city as an orphan and got married to Sophia Richard before our recent tragic divorce.” He answered the chief. The thought of how Sophia treated him made him drop tears as he said the words.

“It's alright, Robert,” the police chief consoled him and went on to his next question, “How did you come across this ring?” He brought out the ring that fell off Robert's pocket and presented it to him.

On seeing the ring, Robert was shocked and quickly retrieved it from the police chief. The officer who brought him in tried to hit him for his action but the police chief stopped him.

“How did you get my ring?” Robert asked the police chief.

The chief gently replied him,

“While you were with your in-laws in the interrogation room, it fell off you but we know who it belongs to, so my question is how did you get hold of it?”

Robert protested,

“It belongs to me. I've had it since I was a child.”

He suddenly remembered what the torture from Nobody was all about, it was the brutal version of inquiring about his possession of the ring, but whilst Nobody was brutal in his methods, the police chief was overly gentle with his.

The police chief nodded his head to Robert's words and asked him his next question,

“So are you related to the Williams family?”

“You mean the William Williams family?” He asked, sounding a little bit confused.

“Yes. The Williams family. The popular Williams family. The rich and powerful Williams family. Yes, that one.” The police chief said to him hysterically.

Robert chuckled slightly at the chief's question and answered him,

“Oh that?” Robert asked, “No. No, no, no, no. I don't know them nor their have I ever had the pleasure to meet them, only their reputation.”

Although he also bore William as his last name, he wasn't related to them in any way. How could he be? If he was related to the Williams family, he had know.

“Are you sure, Robert?” The police chief asked to confirm further.

Robert laughed again at the persistent efforts by everyone to make him accept or say what he was not nor knew anything about.

“Look at me sir, I've literally gone through hell these past days, all my life has been me walking through the valley of hell to finally be in this hell I'm in right now. How could I possibly be related to the Williams and still be like this? Does it even make any sense?”

The police chief sighed deeply and then gave Robert the information he hoped to provide clarity.

“Well, when the ring fell off you, your in-laws saw the ring and accused you of stealing it. They took it to return it to Mr. Jude William hoping for a reward but they were not allowed to meet with him because they had no prior appointment. However, the Head of Affairs of the Williams Empire asked them to return the ring back to this station which they did. Few minutes ago, I received a call from this same man asking about you.”

“Asking about me or about someone else?” Robert asked quickly to get things cleared.

“He asked specifically about you.” The police chief confirmed.

Robert's mind began racing in fear, first, it was the torment from his wife and her family, then the torture from Nobody, and now, the most powerful family in the country is asking about him because his in-laws accused him of stealing their ring. How much worse could his life be? He asked himself.

Robert began shaking in fear, worrying about the situation he found himself in,

“Oh my God. I'm finished,” he grumbled to himself, “Do they want me dead for stealing their ring? I swear to you, I did not steal their ring, I've had it since I was a child.” He asked the police chief, making efforts to clear the accusations of his in-laws.

The police chief calmed him down and got him settled again,

“No, Robert. The Williams are not like that. If anything, they'd even reward you for having their family heirloom.” The chief said to him.

The words of the police chief gave him relief and the hearing of reward gave him consolation as he hoped that finally, this powerful family could save him from the shackles of his tormentor in-laws and menacing wife.

“Oh, thank God.” He said out loud.

“Well, they asked that we check your back, just around your left shoulder for a birthmark. Do you by any means have one?” The police chief asked him.

Robert was surprised by how the powerful Williams family knew about his birthmark. But he confirmed it anyway.

“Yes, I do.” He took off his shirt to show it to the chief. A birthmark shaped like a certain map was right there on his back, just around his left shoulder.

Once the police chief confirmed it, he got up to his feet and saluted Robert.

“SIR!!!”

The officer and Nobody with him at the office, not knowing why their boss was saluting their prisoner, joined him in the salutation.

After the salutations, the police chief picked up his phone and made a call.

“Yes, sir. He's the one.” He said to the receiver on the other end.

“Am on my way.” The receiver, a solid and powerful male voice answered him.
