Chapter Five : Sentence And New Form Of Friendship

Nicolas’ heart sank as he listened to the witness testify. The witness was a neighbor who had seen him at the scene on the night of the Clinton and Clara humiliated him . The prosecutor grilled the witness, trying to make it seem like Nicolas was the only possible suspect. The defense lawyer did his best to cast doubt on the witness's testimony, but it didn't seem to be working.

Nicolas felt like the whole world was against him. How could he possibly convince anyone of his innocence when the evidence was stacked against him? He felt like giving up, but he knew he had to keep fighting.

The first few weeks in prison were the hardest for Nicolas . He was alone in a cell, with only the sounds of other prisoners and the guards to keep him company. The food was bland and unappetizing, and the other inmates were hostile and aggressive. He felt like he was in a nightmare from which he couldn't wake up.

The only thing that kept him going was the hope that he would eventually be able to prove his innocence and go home. But as the days dragged on, that hope began to fade. He started to feel like he would be trapped in this place forever.

The bed in the cell was nothing more than a thin mattress on a hard metal frame, and the springs were so worn that they poked through the fabric. The cell was cold and damp, and the only light came from a single, flickering fluorescent bulb. The toilet was filthy, and the water that came out of the faucet was brown and smelled of rust.

The other inmates were just as bad as the conditions of the prison. They were loud and aggressive, and they seemed to take pleasure in tormenting the new arrivals. They made fun of Nicolas’ clothes and his lack of prison experience.

The other inmates were like a pack of wolves, and Nicolas was the lone deer that they had singled out for their hunt. They began to harass him constantly, making fun of his looks and his mannerisms. They would bump into him in the halls, knocking him to the floor, and they would steal his meager possessions, leaving him with nothing.

Nicolas began to feel like a shell of a person, stripped of his dignity and self-respect. He tried to ignore the bullying, but it became harder and harder to bear.

From the moment he met Marvin, Nicolas felt a connection. Marvin had also been framed for a murder he didn't commit, and the two men bonded over their shared experience. They spent hours talking, comparing their cases and trying to find any discrepancies that could help them get out of prison.

Over time, they became close friends, supporting each other through the dark days in prison. They knew they had to stick together, because no one else would look out for them. Together, they would find a way to prove their innocence and get their lives back.

Of course being the Nicolas friend came with a lot of consequences. Marvin has also attracted attention towards himself by being friends with Nicolas.

Once it became clear that Marvin and Nicolas were friends, the other inmates turned on Marvin. They called him names and pushed him around in the yard. They even started to steal his food at mealtime, leaving him with barely enough to eat. Marvin began to feel scared and alone, just like Nicolas had been before they met.

But Nicolas wasn't about to let his friend suffer the same fate he had. He stood up for Marvin, confronting the bullies and telling them to back off. The other inmates were surprised by Nicolas' boldness, and they began to think twice about targeting him or his friend.

The bullying of Marvin got worse and worse. One day, the leader of the bullies confronted him in the hallway, demanding that he cut ties with Nicolas . "He's a loser, just like you," he said, "and you're both going to end up dead if you don't stay away from each other.”

The bully's words hit Marvin like a gut punch. He knew that his wife and unborn child were in danger, and he felt powerless to protect them. He tried to focus on his work in the prison laundry, but his mind kept returning to the threats that had been made against his family.

Then, an idea came to him. He had heard that the warden was looking for new workers in the library, and he knew that he would be able to do that work without fear of attack from the other inmates. All he had to do was convince the warden to give the job to Nicolas and himself . That way they can both be safe for the meantime.

Marvin felt his blood boiling, but he didn't want to make things worse for himself by getting into a fight. He kept his cool and walked away, but the threat hung in the air. He knew he had to find a way to protect himself and his friend.

That night, as Nicolas and Marvin were getting ready for bed, Marvin turned to his friend. "I have an idea," he said. "I'm going to ask the warden if I can work in the library. It's a job where we wouldn't have to worry about the other inmates."

Marcus looked at him in surprise. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" he asked. "The library is considered a prestigious job, and the warden will be very selective about who he chooses."

Marvin nodded. "I know, but I think it's worth a shot.

After much thought Nicolas reluctantly agreed to Marvin's proposal . He hopes that this will be the solution to all the bullying they are facing from their fellow inmates . Not knowing that this will be one of the most intense decisions they have made throughout their stay here .
