03. The Dreadful Kiss

It had been two weeks since he started working at Ek's choice, a supermarket owned by Erika Anderson's parents. He could remember how unimpressed Lauren had been when he told her about his new job. He knew the job was demeaning but he was expecting a better reaction. After all, she was the one who suggested he explored other options.

Ever since the day she locked him out, Lauren had been acting strange and she was almost never around but anytime he tried to bring it up, she would bombard him with her "I'm the only one working' speech.

Jason and Lauren had been married for two years and she had never for once complained about being stressed, sure it was absolutely normal for her to feel overwhelmed but her suddenly acting out seemed highly suspicious.

What was worse was that she hardly ever had her wedding ring on, a jewel that was meant to be a symbol of their love and commitment to each other.

The bus came to a stop and Jason realized he had been buried in his thoughts again. He got off and walked into the restaurant they had agreed to meet.

Erika was already waiting for him and seeing her out of uniform made her look quite different. Normally she was always on their orange T-shirt and black pants. And she always wore her hair up, either in a high ponytail or a bun.

It looked like she made extra efforts to look nice because she wore a mini flaired dress that stopped above her knees, showing just about enough amount of her thighs.

Unlike Lauren that had a slender model-like figure, Erika was quite chubby and more curvy, and she had a small waist.

She had a head full of strawberry blonde curls, a far cry from Lauren's short black hair. Erika was from mexico so sometimes, one could still hear the accent when she spoke.

She smiled as she noticed him, and even her smile was beautiful. She was beautiful.

Lauren was beautiful as well but Erika had like a more…innocent beauty. "What are you doing?" He cautioned himself. Why was he comparing his wife with another woman? No matter what they could be going through, he had promised to spend the rest of his life with Lauren, and he wasn't going back on his promise.

"What am I even doing here?" He glanced at Erika and saw that she was still smiling at him. "I'm already here so I might as well get through it."

"Hey, I didn't think you would show." She stated as he reached their table.

"Me neither." When his boss's daughter asked him to meet her for lunch, he told himself he wasn't going. But as he woke up that morning, he felt the strange urge to see her.

"I'm so glad you came." She still had that bright smile on her face and he smiled back. "I know you're probably wondering why I asked you to meet me here."

"Yeah."

"Well, I need your help."

"My help? With what?"

"Well, my boyfriend saw you with me the other day, remember?"

How could he forget? The two were at work that day and being the friendly person that Erika was, she was all over him. They weren't discussing anything funny in particular but it didn't stop her from touching and holding him while she laughed.

A guy that looked just within his age bracket walked in and when he noticed he and Erika, his face contorted into the most harsh frown that Jason had ever seen.

He marched angrily towards them and pulled Erika aggressively to himself. "Back off, she's mine!" He declared, shooting Jason a cold glare.

Normally, Jason would have proudly flaunted his ring at the guy's face but he didn't. Instead he stood up straight, his tall frame towering her boyfriend's. He looked him dead in the eyes, a slight smile on his face and said slowly, in the most intimidating voice he had. "And if I don't?"

He hadn't seen him since then but Jason was sure he had made himself an enemy.

"Do you remember him?" Erika asked again and he nodded.

"Yeah I remember."

"Awesome. I need your help."

"Yeah, you said that before."

"I think he's cheating on me, and I need your help in confirming it."

"No thank you." There was no way he was getting himself involved in someone else's relationship.

"Hear me out, you don't actually have to do anything much. I just need you to pretend like you're my boyfriend for a while, that's all."

"Pass."

"Oh come on JP, can't you help out a friend?"

They had only known each other for two weeks and so Jason wasn't sure he could call her a friend just yet. "Did this friend forget that I am a married man?"

"Your wife doesn't have to know. It'll only be for a few days, a week tops."

"Fine." He was surprised as to how easily he agreed to her outrageous request, but something inside him just didn't want to turn her down.

They wrapped up their date and after procuring some donuts for his wife, Jason was on his way.

"So, this is where you live?" It was obvious that he was unimpressed by the sound of his voice.

"Yes." Despite every of her senses telling her not to, Lauren took Phil to their apartment. "Have a seat, I'll get you something to drink."

"Isn't it a bit small?" His question stopped her movements. "How do you cope in such a place?"

"Well, you know…I live here alone so I thought I'd go with something simple."

"Why did you leave your parent's house? That place is a mansion."

"You know how my mother can be, I barely have any privacy."

"Ah, I know what you mean. So, about the ball, are you coming?"

"It depends, are you asking me to go with you?" She smiled, taking a step closer to him.

The ball in question was the Deluxe Dance. An extravagant party held for only the best of the best.

Business men from all over the US and even other states flew in to attend. Her mother was well connected in the city but even her connections couldn't get her an invite.

Lauren's hope was to go with Phil and meet as many successful men as she could.

"Of course darling." Using that moment as an opportunity, Phil took Lauren in his arms and placed a kiss on her lips.

Also in that very moment, the door opened and Jason let himself in, just in time to witness the whole thing happen.
