Chapter 1

“You are fully healed.” Maxwell smiled at the patient in front of him.

The patient, who was initially diagnosed with brain cancer couldn't contain his joy. His face brightened in ecstasy.

“I can't believe this.” The patient exclaimed. He had once doubted if he would live long as orthodox doctors told him he had just a few months to live.

“I told you that you will be fine.” Maxwell giggled.

Maxwell was a young man in his late twenties. He had lived in the orphanage home since the beginning of his life, with no clue as to who his parents or relatives were. He was exceptionally gifted in medicine and could cure virtually all diseases using ancient and traditional medicine.

He took out a piece of paper and scribbled some words on it.

“Follow these prescriptions, and you will have nothing to worry about.” He said to the man before walking out of the room.

He still had five more patients to attend to before the day ran out. He doesn't have a hospital of his own, rather, he cures the patients in their houses.

His phone rang in his pocket as he stepped out of the mansion. He took out his phone and was shocked at the caller ID.

“Crescent Hospital.” He muttered to himself, his face shrunk in worry. He contemplated for a while before picking up.

“Hi, is this Mr Maxwell?” A feminine voice said over the phone, which Maxwell guessed belonged to the receptionist.

“Yes, any problem.”

“Your wife is currently admitted to our hospital, and we need your presence.” The voice said, and Maxwell could feel his head spin all over.

His wife, Amelia, was the love of his life; she meant the whole world to him, and he wouldn't risk hurting her a bit.

“What's wrong with her?” He screamed out.

“I am afraid I can't say that over the phone. We need your presence here as soon as possible sir.” The receptionist finalized.

Maxwell sighed and hung up. He made up his mind, canceled his remaining appointments for the day, and hurried into his car.

He could feel the wind screaming across his ears as he sped through the highway. He wasn't even concerned about the police ticket, what mattered to him most was his wife's safety. He had to get to the hospital as fast as he could.

“Where's my wife?” He asked the receptionist, who threw him a disgusting look.

Maxwell didn't care about how she looked at him, he was already used to such awful gazes people threw at him.

“You are…”

“Maxwell.” He cut out the receptionist from her words.

“Room 15.” The receptionist said, and Maxwell dashed into the wards.

He met a doctor and some nurses taking care of Amelia. Even though he knew the doctor was an expert, he wasn't relieved. He preferred treating his wife with his hands.

“What's wrong with her?” He asked after some minutes of silence.

The doctor beckoned to the nurses, and they quietly walked out of the room, leaving only Maxwell, Amelia, and the doctor.

The doctor took a deep breath and sat on one of the chairs.

“You are making me cringe, what exactly is wrong with her?” Maxwell asked, almost about to lose his composure.

The doctor cleared his throat,

“I am afraid your wife is diagnosed with a weak uterus as a result of frequent abortions.” The doctor paused to register the shocking look on Maxwell's face.

“I am afraid she can't conceive again.” The doctor continued.

The pen Maxwell was holding slipped off his hand, his face opened wide in shock, and his eyeballs almost popped out of their sockets.

“Did you just say abortion?” A dazed Maxwell asked.

“Yes, I am very sure of it.” The doctor replied.

Maxwell flung his gaze at Amelia, who just lay on the bed as if nothing important was going on.

“Is what he said the truth?” He asked Amelia with a voice filled with sadness, who simply nodded to his question.

“But you told me you were a virgin, and that you are nervous and afraid of trying it since it's your first time. Besides…we didn't do anything together, how then you were pregnant?” He asked in a mixture of shock and disappointment.

Amelia sighed, gently got up from her bed, and faced Maxwell. Her face was cold and lacking all the emotions Maxwell sought for.

“Face the reality, guy; I lied to you. I was never a virgin, and I wasn't afraid of anything. I just hated having anything to do with you.” She paused with a sigh.

“You come back home every night reeking of sweat, my colleagues at work insult me for marrying a poor man like you. You can't give me the luxurious life that I want, are you even a man? I can't even attend parties with my friends and colleagues, as I am always the center of discussion. Also, I hate every bit of your profession.” Amelia spat out, not holding back any word that came to her mind, she didn't even mind the presence of the doctor.

Maxwell was infuriated; even though he was poor, the last thing he would take was somehow trampling on his dignity and pride or someone speaking ill of his profession.

“I failed as a man? Didn't I try my best to get you whatever you want over the years? And you said…you hated my profession? Isn't it what I use to pay your bills? I work very hard, struggling just to make you satisfied, yet, you took it all for nothing. I waited for a good three years, just for the day you will finally drop your guard and let me in, whereas it was all lies.” He muttered in annoyance. One could sense how heavy his heart was.

He was filled with anger and hatred. He suddenly hated Amelia for lying to him, for allowing another man into a spot that should exclusively belong to him, he hated her for trampling on his dignity and pride, he hated her for speaking ill of his profession. Nevertheless, she was still his wife after all, even though it seemed everything was about to fall apart.

He faced the doctor and asked for the bill, which he settled.

“These are her medications.” The doctor handed over a white plastic bag to him.

“Give it to her.” He replied, storming out of the hospital, his face reddened with anger and fury.

He hopped into his car, and drove off, leaving behind his unfaithful wife at the hospital.
