chapter 3

"Why are you perplexed, aren't you a house boy anyway? Do as she said immediately" one of her friends howled at Greg as well.

These were little girls not much younger than Jose, Melissa was 14 years old spoilt daughter of Desmond. Desmond had her out of wedlock when he was younger but is now married to a beautiful lady from a prominent family. Aside from Ma Carolyn, Melissa does not respect any other person including her father.

"So you lied about being a family member, when you are just a houseboy" one of the guards that was watching what was happening said.

"I told you that I know these types of people, claiming to be one thing or the other just to get a pass at any party " one of the onlookers murmured but loud enough for Greg to hear.

"I know you to be slow but not stupid Greg, don't make me tell Ma Carolyn that you refused to serve me " Melissa said folding her hands to her chest. She was Desmond's first and only daughter and Ma Carolyn's oldest and favorite granddaughter. Getting on Melissa's nerves was akin to directly offending Ma Carolyn.

"I won't be filling your glass Melissa, I'm not a waiter here" Greg said as calmly as he could muster. Though he didn't intend to create a scene, but he was already boiling in anger and people were already gathering to hear what was happening.

"Then watch and see" Melissa said and stormed into the ballroom with her troop of friends following closely behind her.

"Why are these servants too proud these days, just get her the drink" someone from the crowd advised.

"That's exactly what one of my house boys did last week, and guess what? I fired him immediately" Greg listened to all their murmur, he was really suppressing the urge to speak to or fight any of them.

"All I need is the trust fund, what these people are saying don't matter, " he reminded himself. While waiting patiently outside.

Soon some men, obviously sent by Ma Carolyn, came to drag Greg inside.

"My daughter said that you refused to serve her, is that true?" Ma Carolyn asked as soon as the guards dropped Greg on the floor. And as if she wasn't even expecting an answer from Greg, she continued.

"Your job is to serve the Santiagos family, be it cleaning or running errands, and as long as you work for me, every member of this family has every right to send you on an errand. So get to it" Ma Carolyn instructed.

"I didn't come here to serve anyone, Ma Carolyn. I came to ask you for the $10,000 trust fund that my father left in my name, Ma Luci is dying at the hospital and needs an urgent surgical operation" Greg said, cleaning up the mess on his clothes.

"Well if you really care about your mother, then do your Job first" Ma Carolyn threatened, to the cheering of Melissa and her friends.

Greg knew better than to be stubborn to Ma Carolyn, so he reluctantly took the glass from one of the waiters and went to refill it for Melissa and her friends who laughed and taunted him, after that Ma Carolyn flung a $10 bill for him on the floor.

"Trust funds are meant for bonafide children of the family. Not servants, Greg. You are way too ambitious" Carissa chipped in with a frustrated look on her face. She really wished that Greg would disappear so that the party could continue smoothly again.

She was already feeling embarrassed that Augustus had to witness such a show of shame from her family. "Will he still think of marrying me after witnessing all these?" She thought.

Greg's phone rang in his pocket. It was a call from the hospital, he didn't even bother to pick it up because he already knew what it was all about. This is exactly the two weeks time given for Ma Luci's surgery, and he was yet to drop a dime at the hospital.

Instead he fell to his knees and pleaded with Ma Carolyn.

"Please, whatever Ma Luci had done to you. I beg on her behalf please forgive her and help with her hospital bills please. My mother is going to die in few hours time" Greg begged, tears already wailing up in his eyes.

" Let me know when she dies, the Santiagos family will proudly sponsor her burial" Ma Carolyn responded with a scornful grin.

This was the last straw for Greg, Standing up from the floor he made up his mind never to ask for help from any of them ever again. He'll look for other means and pay Ma Luci's hospital bills.

The party was interrupted by the quarrelsome voice of a middle aged woman. Aunt Angela, Emirian's mother as she was struggling to pass by the guards.

"Let her in", Ma Carolyn instructed.

"My daughter will no longer marry this godforsaken bastard. I found a befitting suitor for my daughter" Aunt Angela fumed.

The people around the venue could not control their laughter. Aunt Angela has always been dramatic and everyone in the family knows.

"Mom, aren't you tired of trying to decide my fate? I'm an adult and if I don't want to marry Greg I'll be the person to protest and not you." Emirian spoke for the first time, unlike Carissa she was a girl of few words. She only spoke when necessary and was mostly quiet.

"Shut up your mouth, what do you know? You ungrateful soul, your mates are excelling in their different careers, what have you achieved? You are the reason Ma Carolyn wants to marry you to this beggar, if you did well like Carissa maybe you would have gotten yourself a befitting suitor" Aunt Angela barked at Emirian.

"You should be thankful that I'm trying to save your future, something you can't do for yourself," she continued.

But this marriage stuff was in the least of Greg's problems now, he really needed to get to the hospital to find out why they called earlier. As Greg stormed out of the party, Emirian followed him blocking his way at the entrance.

"You asked for $10,000, I'll give you $9,000 that's all I have. I hope it will help, " she said, still spreading her hands to prevent Greg from escaping.
