Today was one of Gabriel’s least favorite days. It was the day he would serve Lily with the divorce papers, and he was nervous as hell because he was scared of what his future would be without her.

“You are learning to be a man, son. The road may be difficult, but you will make it,” Mr. Whitewood said, patting Gabriel on the back.

Brittany, who was standing close to Gabriel, looked at Mr. Whitewood, wondering what kind of monster he was. She wanted to tell Gabriel what she had heard a few days ago, but she could not because he might not believe her and she would lose her job.

“Thanks, dad, and I should get going,” Gabriel said, walking toward the line of cars waiting for him in front of the house.

Brittany tried to move, and his father grabbed her hand.

“I am watching you,” he whispered, and she swallowed hard, yanking her hand away, then dashed off to meet Gabriel, who was almost at the car.
