Chapter 83

Sitting in his spacious apartment, Lucas read a book as a means of evading the ordinary circumstances of his existence.

He lost himself in the pages, illuminated only by a dimmer light from a dangling bulb that threw shadows on the walls. He struggled to pick up the phone when the sound of its ringing broke the stillness.

His heart raced as he frantically typed Isabella's name onto the computer, "Isabella?" What's going on?"

“Lucas, I'm in trouble,” she said with a quiver in her voice over the phone. Please, lend me a hand.

"What happened?" Lucas said with a newfound sense of urgency. Are you not here?"

I can't explain over the phone," Isabella said hastily as she gave her address. Please, please come as soon as you can."

Without a second thought, Lucas put the book down, slid into his jacket, and grabbed his vehicle keys. Isabella's concern was obvious over the phone, pressing him to go quicker.
