02: The Price Of Saving Someone

It is a significant amount of money to have $500,000. That was what his brother had said to him about the wager when he had finally made it out of that dark place.

If he had $500,000, he could have retired, but his daughter needed his help.

Barrett’s fingers nearly damaged the phone. Before speaking again, he took deep breaths to calm down.

“What do you mean my wife took it all?”

“She opened the safe and took the cash. She emptied accounts. She said she needed to make a deal, and everything would be okay, and you know everything!” Rose worriedly replied.

Barrett’s wrath made him tremble. He showed great restraint to resist lashing out. He tightened his teeth and focused. He shook his head to get rid of bad thoughts.

“Don’t worry. I’ll talk to Claudia to see what happened,” He said, breathing hard.

After the conversation, Barrett headed to the cafeteria. He expected to see Claudia and her daughter, but they weren’t there. Barrett called Claudia, but she didn’t answer.

He went out of the hospital, just as he did on the sidewalk, in front of a bar that was still closed, showing a hot dog stand.

Barrett’s wife and daughter ate as men talked to his wife. He couldn’t stand that she did it in front of her daughter.

Barrett’s gaze turned cold, and he quickly walked toward them.

When Melanie saw him, his daughter ran toward him and asked, “Daddy, do you want some?”

Seeing his daughter calmed him down. Nodding, Barrett smiled.

“Maybe later, honey. I have to talk to mom,” he said as he patted her head gently.

With that, he walked toward Claudia. She was smiling, and when she saw him, her smile disappeared.

“What do you want?” She questioned.

Barrett gritted his teeth when one of the men smoked in front of him.

“The money... Where is it?” He said, maintaining his composure.

She looked at him as if she didn’t know what he was talking about.

“The money you took from the company, where is it?” he repeated firmly.

She raised a brow and looked at him. Claudia let out a wry smile played on her lips.

Wipe that dirty smile off her filthy mouth! Suddenly, Barrett heard a soft voice in his head.

It was not the first time this had happened. But Barrett ignored the voice as usual and said, “Our daughter needs that money for medical care. Rose told me you removed money from the safe and in the corporate accounts. Where is it now?”

She took a deep drag on her cigarette, then dropped it and stepped on it.

“Sorry, I lost that money. I set up a company, and it fell,” Claudia casually replied.

Barrett was shocked. His thoughts screamed at him to lose control.

“Did you take the money from the company that was already working to open another company? Are you stupid?” Barrett forcefully asked.

After saying so, he repented. He then saw his daughter. He took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry, honey.”

“Did you call me stupid? Really? Who is the one who invested all his filthy money in a trucking business that is useless?” Claudia asked, far from forgiving him.

“The business was working... there was no reason for you to withdraw the money!” Barrett responded with restrained anger.

But she raised her hand and said, “That was my fucking money. I have always had money, but since I decided to go with you, I have never been able to have anything nice. I deserve it. I take care of the girls every day. I deserved to have something nice!”

Barrett didn’t want to continue listening to her nonsense. He stared at her and said, “It doesn’t matter. Whatever money is left of it, I need it. We need to pay for medical supplies!”

At that moment, she looked to the side. Claudia nervously said, “I don’t have it... I spent it all!”

Barrett’s wrath grew as he stared at Claudia. He screamed, “All of it?!”

Claudia retreated, and the men around her retreated. The only one who stayed close to Barrett was Melanie.

“Daddy, are you okay?” Melanie asked after she grabbed her father’s hand.

Seeing Melanie calmed him down. He bent down and caressed his daughter’s head.

“I’m sorry I yelled, sweetie. I will not do it anymore!” He said.

She nodded, and he saw her smile.

“Why are you apologizing to her? You yelled at me, bastard!” Claudia remarked while glaring at him.

Barrett got up and looked at Claudia with anger.

“Listen, our daughter needs very expensive treatment. That money was the only thing she could afford... but thanks to you, she got lost, don’t ask me to apologize and get the damn money!”

She smirked and replied, “That’s your job. You are the man after all!”

He eyed her furiously. Barrett panted. He prayed Claudia wouldn’t keep pressing his button since he wasn’t sure how long he could control himself.

Barrett shook his head. He didn’t have time to deal with Claudia’s stupidity, or else he might do something he would regret in front of his child.

He firmly helped his daughter’s hand and said, “C’mon, darling! Let’s see your sister….”

They started walking back to the hospital when Claudia suddenly said, “Release my daughter! Now!”

He turned and saw Claudia calling the girl with her hand. Melanie looked at her, and Barrett, taking a deep breath, said, “Now you want to be a mother? Maybe you shouldn’t have taken the money!”

“Come, Melanie, get away from that violent man!” Claudia replied, full of anger.

Barrett looked at her and angrily said, “Don’t play with me, Claudia... this is not the time!”

However, the men who were behind Claudia got in the way.

“You shouldn’t take other people’s girls...” One of the men said while looking at Barrett.

Barrett looked back at him coldly. Just his look would have been enough for that man to withdraw, but Barrett had the small hand of his daughter holding him.

With anger, Barrett replied, “She’s my daughter!”

However, one of the men snatched Melanie from his hands and handed her over to Claudia.

Immediately, the girl began to cry. Barrett, eyes widened. He heard the voice inside him that screamed to destroy them.

Just then, he felt the hand of one of the men on his shoulder, and without waiting for another second, the Barbaric woke up.

He turned, and with an accurate blow to the elbow, he broke that man’s arm.

Two more got closer to Barrett to attack him, but he raised his leg and broke the nose of one while approaching the other.

He then quickly wrapped his arm around the other man, and with his fist, he hit him in instantly ten times, rendering him unconscious.

The last of his enemies looked at him and, terrified, began to back away, but with an accurate kick to his legs, he knocked him to the ground, and then, stepping on his jaw with force, he fractured it.

In ancient times he would have gone on to shatter every bone in his body.

But something else caught his attention.

He saw Claudia and his crying daughter. Claudia stepped back as Barrett approached. Her terror showed. And that was the same with Melanie.

Barrett regretted his action. He scared Melanie.

“I won’t give her to you!” Claudia said, squeezing the girl tightly.

Barrett looked at Melanie with mixed emotions. He felt lost. But he still could take care of this later.

“Take care of Emily and Melanie. I’m going to get some money for the treatment, Claudia. I’m warning you… take care of my daughters!” Barrett firmly said.

With those words, he left Claudia where she was.

Seeing the men on the floor, he remembered his old personality and the angry cry of the crowd that chanted a name that he no longer possessed.

Upon seeing everyone on the floor earlier, a deep satisfaction began to flood his ego.

Barrett shook his head and controlled his urges as fast as he could, and he just continued on his way.

The memories of a simpler life haunted him, but since the birth of his daughters, he had promised that he would not use anything of that old life.

However, things were complicated, and his old character was freed from the chains that he had imposed.

A civilized man shows his true face in the face of adversity. However, the Barbaric was just too dangerous for anyone.

He had to find a way to save his daughter, and for her life, he would do it, no matter what he had to do.

Barrett was going to get her two daughters over that terrible obstacle in life.
