“Alice, can you hear me?” He called again, this time a bit louder. Finally, Alice’s eyes fluttered open, hazy with sleep.

“Joseph…” she murmured, her voice barely audible.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.

“Just sleepy… I want to go to bed,” she mumbled.

“Alright, I’ll carry you to your room,” Joseph said. If it weren’t for Mason Alvarez’s influence, Alice wouldn’t have drunk at all. This entire situation was Mason’s fault, he thought irritably.

He gently scooped Alice into his arms. She was light, her slender figure perfectly proportioned, with curves in all the right places. As Joseph carried her, Alice instinctively burrowed her head into his chest, her movements soft and endearing. Even in her half-conscious state, she seemed to find comfort and security in his embrace.

Joseph pushed open the door to Alice’s room and laid her gently on the bed. As he was about to leave, Alice’s soft voice stopped him.

“Joseph… I want water,” she murmured.

“Wait here,” Joseph replied. He stepped out

As he stepped outside and prepared to drive off, his phone buzzed. Glancing at the caller ID, he saw it was Heidi. Without hesitation, he answered.“Hello? Joseph, are you awake yet?” Heidi’s voice came through, lazy and tinged with a yawn, as if she had just woken up.“I’m heading to work now,” Joseph replied.“Mmm, same here. I’m on my way—I have an early class,” Heidi said, yawning again. “Hey, do you have some time around ten? Let’s meet at our usual spot. I have something I want to talk to you about.”“Sure. I’ll be free after my morning class,” Joseph answered.“Great, see you then,” Heidi said before hanging up.It wasn’t until after the call ended that Joseph realized he hadn’t asked what she wanted to talk about. But since it was too late to ask, he figured he’d find out when they met. With that thought, he drove off.Meanwhile, Mason Alvarez was still sound asleep. The previous night’s drinking had taken its toll, and at some point during the night, she had woken up feeling

"What are you even talking about? Joseph and I… we’re not like that," Alice protested, her face turning a charming shade of red as she lowered her head shyly."Not like that, huh? If you’re not sure, why don’t you just let Joseph be with me instead?" Mason teased, a sly smile curling at the corners of her lips."Don't even think about it! Stop with your nonsense!" Alice snapped, her reaction unusually intense."See? You’re already getting defensive. Still think you’re ‘not like that’?" Mason continued to tease."Fine. I’ll share him with you—half and half!" Alice muttered hesitantly after a brief pause."Pfft!" Mason nearly spat out her drink. "What kind of logic is that? Since when can you split a person in half?"Mason couldn’t help but marvel at Alice’s bizarre train of thought."Don’t overthink it. I’m just pitying you. Look at you—you’re not getting any younger and still single. It’s kind of tragic," Alice said, her tone laced with mock sympathy."Excuse me? You little brat, who

"I’m heading to Grandma’s this afternoon," Heidi replied, her brow furrowing faintly. "I feel like once Grandpa wakes up, a lot of things will start to change. I don’t know what kind of changes those will be, and that uncertainty makes me uneasy. And when I feel unsettled, I just really want to see you. That’s all."Joseph chuckled softly. "How are you so sure I’ll even be able to wake your grandfather up?""There was a time when I didn’t know you well," Heidi said, her voice steady, her eyes unwavering. "But things are different now. I’ve realized that almost everything you say seems to come true. I believe in you. I believe that this Saturday, Grandpa will wake up. He’s been in this strange sleep for three years now."Joseph smiled faintly. "If you believe in me, that’s enough. But even if your grandfather waking up does bring changes, I can promise you one thing: none of those changes will harm you.""You’re right," he continued, his tone firm. "Your sister might be the primary hei

"Is it me? Am I just not attractive enough? Is that why he wasn’t interested, even when I was practically throwing myself at him?"The thought left her strangely annoyed. She grabbed her phone and sent Joseph another message."You know what? Forget lunch. I’ll feed it to the dogs instead."Joseph stared at the message, his face a mix of exasperation and amusement. He sent back a string of question marks, his way of expressing his bewilderment at Mason’s antics."What’s with all the question marks? Are you reflecting on your behavior?" Mason fired back almost instantly.Joseph shook his head, chuckling to himself. This woman really had a knack for saying the most outrageous things."I’ll wait for you in the office," Joseph replied simply to Mason Alvarez’s message."Wait for what? I already told you, your lunch has been thrown away," Mason shot back."You didn’t throw it away," Joseph replied confidently."Then starve for all I care!" Mason retorted.Joseph didn’t bother responding fur

"How did you even come to that conclusion?" Joseph asked, his tone laced with disbelief."It’s not impossible," Mason quipped. "Your little girlfriend already said she’d share you with me. She’s willing to give me half of you.""Are you out of your mind? I’m a person, not an object. How can you take half of me?" Joseph said, completely exasperated."Hey, it wasn’t my idea. It was your little girlfriend’s suggestion," Mason said with an innocent shrug."She might’ve said it, but I didn’t agree," Joseph replied, giving her a pointed look."Wow, talk about double standards. Sure, she’s your little girlfriend, but do you have to be so blatantly biased? It’s unfair," Mason said, feigning jealousy."What little girlfriend? Don’t say things like that," Joseph said, shaking his head in exasperation."Whatever. I already talked to her, and she agreed. If I need you, I can borrow you. Once I’m done, I’ll return you to her," Mason said with a devil-may-care attitude."Borrow me? For what exactly

"Greed is human nature," her grandmother replied meaningfully. As they chatted, one dish after another was brought to the table, filling it to the brim. Tonight’s dinner was indeed a feast."Grandma, could we have the servants leave while we eat? I’d like to have a simple family dinner with just you," Heidi said after a moment’s thought."Of course," the old woman agreed after a brief pause, sensing that Heidi had something on her mind. She turned to the servants and said, "You’re all dismissed. Miss Heidi will keep me company tonight."The servants quickly complied, leaving the hall one by one. Her grandmother even walked to the door herself to close it, her movements deliberate. Watching her, Heidi felt a slight tug at her heart. It seemed her grandmother had already guessed that she had something important to say."Come, sit down. Let’s eat first. I made all your favorites," her grandmother said warmly, placing a few pieces of food on Heidi’s plate. "The food at home must not be ve

Afterward, Heidi lingered at the Cooper family estate, chatting with her grandmother and watching television.By the time she finally left, it was close to ten. She got into the car, reaching her apartment complex just before eleven. As she stepped out of the car and began walking home, she took out her phone and called Joseph. The call connected quickly."Hello? Joseph, are you still awake?"Heidi asked casually."No. How did things go?"Joseph’s voice came through the phone."No issues. Grandma supports you. The time is set for two in the afternoon—you can come a little earlier.""She also asked me to tell you she’s craving your chilled lotus seed soup. She wants to know if you can bring some for her."Heidi relayed the message directly. There was a brief pause before Joseph responded."Alright, I understand.""Joseph, I’ll be there too. I can’t just let you go alone. Let’s set a time and head over together."Heidi sugges

“Huh? What did you say? Joseph can play the piano? How come I didn’t know that?”Alice’s voice was filled with genuine surprise.“You didn’t know either?”Mason Alvarez was equally taken aback. Joseph might have forgotten things, but Alice—his childhood friend—surely wouldn’t be unaware. After all, the two of them had grown up together.“Nope, I had no idea! But honestly, Joseph knows so many things, it wouldn’t surprise me if he could do anything.”“And he’s always been so low-key. Unless absolutely necessary, he never shows off his talents.”“Ugh, this Butterfly Lovers performance was so beautiful... and he’s never played a single note for me!” Alice grumbled, clearly annoyed.“The concert’s almost over. You’ll be getting your man back soon,” Mason quickly replied.“You better be right. "Thank you for the offer, Mr. Zasit," Joseph said with a faint, bitter smile, "but I’m afraid I must decline.""I have a deep love for music, but the piano is only a hobby for me. I’ve never intended to pursue it as a lifelong career."The host translated Joseph’s response in real time, and Zasit’s face registered visible shock."Oh! What a pity," Zasit exclaimed, stunned. "You possess extraordinary talent. You should be shining on the world's grandest stages."He was clearly taken aback. It was hard for him to imagine anyone turning down his invitation."Is he insane? Do you know how many musicians would kill for such an opportunity?""If Zasit ever recognized me, I'd probably laugh myself awake from the dream.""Still, I suppose Mr. Wilson has earned the right to choose. If Zasit himself calls him gifted beyond compare, how many people in this world could match that praise?"The crowd buzzed with astonishment and admiration.“My performance is over, and I’ve done what I came here to

  • Chapter 342

“Mr. Zasit met the love of his life when they were just sixteen. At the time, he was penniless but hopelessly devoted to music.”“She supported his dream unconditionally. To make ends meet, she worked tirelessly, taking on odd jobs just to feed him.”“But when he finally achieved fame and success, tragedy struck—she fell gravely ill and passed away in his arms. He watched helplessly as the light faded from her eyes.”“Mr. Wilson’s music stirred memories long buried deep within him, transporting him back to those difficult yet beautiful days. For a fleeting moment, he saw her radiant smile again.”“That’s why he lost control of his emotions. He asked me to express his sincerest apologies to everyone here.”With those words, the host concluded Zasit’s story and bowed respectfully to the audience. The hall erupted once more in thunderous applause.Off to the side, Lewis Craig stood frozen, his face contorted in embarrassment. He gritted his teeth. What the hell just happened? How is this

Joseph didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he took a moment to consider.“Since Mr. Craig has chosen a foreign love song, I will also choose a love-themed classic from Elysia.”“I’ll play the piano piece Butterfly Lovers.”He spoke calmly, but with conviction.“Butterfly Lovers? What an outdated, cliché piece. How utterly provincial,” Lewis Craig sneered, scoffing with disdain under his breath.“Oh, Butterfly Lovers? I know it. I’ve heard it... it’s beautiful!”Zasit, after a moment’s struggle to catch the key words in Joseph’s sentence, suddenly lit up. In his excitement, he blurted out one of the few phrases he knew in Elysian.“Sir, I know this piece. It’s famous—a tragic love story. If you can perform it, whether it’s perfect or flawed, my journey today will be complete.”He spoke in French, his Elysian heavily accented and broken, clearly limited in vocabulary.“Mr. Zasit said he knows the piece Butterfly Lovers and is familiar with its sorrowful tale of love,” the host translat

The host, clearly at a loss under Joseph’s instruction, turned instinctively to Lewis Craig for guidance.“Translate it, obviously! Why are you looking at me like that? I didn’t understand a word they said either!” Lewis Craig frowned, irritation flashing across his face. He was beginning to suspect the host was not the brightest.“You want me to translate word for word?” The host muted his mic and asked.“Isn’t that obvious? If you don’t translate it properly, how the hell am I supposed to know what they said?” Lewis Craig was nearly seething. He was tempted to kick the man off stage. Where did the organizers find this genius? Completely clueless.Following the instruction, the host began translating the exchange between Joseph and Zasit for the audience. As the audience listened, surprise and admiration rippled through the hall. Suddenly, Joseph’s earlier evasiveness about his memory made perfect sense.“Before I begin,” Joseph said, addressing the room in fluent French, “I nee

To be fair, Lewis Craig did possess a certain level of skill. The audience listened to his performance with slight nods of approval. Even Zasit and the other musicians seated at the side of the stage leaned toward one another, whispering softly, occasionally nodding in affirmation.Clearly, even Zasit acknowledged Lewis Craig’s competence. As he played, a smug smile crept onto Lewis's face. To him, the audience’s approval was a given. But what truly delighted him was the idea of humiliating Joseph. I’ll openly express my admiration for his companion right before his eyes and treat him like air. Let’s see how he handles that. With this petty triumph burning in his chest, he felt as if divine inspiration was guiding his fingers.Time flew by, and the relatively long piece Ballade pour Adeline came to an end. As the final notes faded, the hall erupted into applause. Many of the musicians, led by Zasit, rose to their feet to clap for Lewis Craig.Lewis stood, offering a modest nod to the

"Mr. Wilson, this Zasit guy... he does sound pretty good. Is he really famous?" Mason asked curiously.Joseph glanced at Mason Alvarez but said nothing."Mr. Wilson, I’m talking to you. Is he famous? Do you know him?" Mason pressed again."I forgot," Joseph replied, as indifferent as before."Again with the forgetting. Your memory’s really something." Mason huffed, then gave up and turned her attention back to the music. To be fair, Zasit’s performance was exceptional. Even to someone like Mason, who had little musical training, the melodies were captivating. Each time he finished a piece, the hall erupted in thunderous applause and cheers—a testament to his extraordinary talent. After performing three or four consecutive pieces, Zasit paused to address the audience."Is he speaking French? My French is terrible. It all sounds like ‘zee zee waa waa’ to me. So confusing!" Mason said with a helpless frown."He said he’s delighted to be with everyone tonight. His name is Zasit, and

A friend of yours?" Joseph asked casually."Not really. Just a passerby. He said he's the vice president of the Nova City Piano Association." Mason replied with a shake of her head, her tone honest and plain.Upon hearing that, Lewis Craig's face darkened further. Not really? A passerby...?"Charming lady, didn't you say you were waiting for a girlfriend?" Lewis asked, a hint of irritation in his voice."That's right. He's my girlfriend. My bestie. Don’t be fooled by the outer appearance—he might look like a man, but deep down, he’s a woman at heart. We’ve always seen each other as sisters."
