Dinner stretched into the evening, lasting until after seven. Afterward, Heidi lingered at the Cooper family estate, chatting with her grandmother and watching television.

By the time she finally left, it was close to ten. She got into the car, reaching her apartment complex just before eleven.

As she stepped out of the car and began walking home, she took out her phone and called Joseph.

The call connected quickly.

"Hello? Joseph, are you still awake?"

Heidi asked casually.

"No. How did things go?"

Joseph’s voice came through the phone.

"No issues. Grandma supports you. The time is set for two in the afternoon—you can come a little earlier."

"She also asked me to tell you she’s craving your chilled lotus seed soup. She wants to know if you can bring some for her."

Heidi relayed the message directly.

There was a brief pause before Joseph responded.

"Alright, I understand."

"Joseph, I’ll be there too. I can’t just let you go alone. Let’s set a time and head over together."

"I wouldn’t call them insights, just some theories I came across in medical literature that might be relevant to the case.""Old Mr. Cooper’s condition is essentially a state of systemic pseudo-death. His organs have entered a state of dormancy that is incredibly difficult to break.""A standard medical examination would show normal readings, yet in reality, his vital organs have completely shut down. No medical equipment can detect any abnormalities."Leonard Sanchez elaborated."You’re not wrong. That’s more or less the case."Joseph nodded."I’ve studied many medical records on similar cases, and one particular theory stood out to me. There are historical accounts of people being induced into a state of pseudo-death through special techniques.""This was done either to extend the patient’s lifespan or as a form of medical treatment."Leonard Sanchez continued."Perhaps Old Mr. Cooper’s condition is something similar."Joseph mused with a slight smile."Wilson, do you really believe

Tomorrow, I’ll be watching you closely."Leonard Sanchez reminded him. After bidding farewell, Joseph left the office. The distance between Leonard Sanchez’s office and Joseph’s own was short, and soon, he was back in his workspace.Inside, Felix Baker, Brady Rogers, and Mason Alvarez were all present.Joseph walked in, greeting Felix Baker and Brady Rogers with a smile. However, Mason Alvarez merely shot him a glare, leaving Joseph speechless.Settling into his seat, Joseph spent about ten minutes wrapping up some unfinished work."Professor Baker, Professor Rogers, I’m done for the day. Since I have no afternoon classes, I’ll be heading out now. Time to enjoy my weekend. See you next week."Joseph said casually."Professor Wilson’s schedule is enviable—getting an extra half-day of rest just like that."Felix Baker teased."Well, Professor Wilson is still in his adjustment phase. The principal and Professor Sanchez didn’t assign him too heavy a worklo

Joseph rolled his eyes. "Oh please, I still have your lipstick all over my mouth. How do you expect me to walk around like this?""Ugh, here, wipe it off," Mason Alvarez muttered, handing him a wet wipe. With the heat of the moment fading, she recalled how Joseph had shielded her from falling. At least for that, she decided to let the argument slide.Joseph took the wipe and started scrubbing his lips as he headed downstairs.Yet, the lipstick stain was stubborn, refusing to come off completely.Seeing him leave, Mason Alvarez hurried after him.Just as the two reached the ground floor, the elevator doors slid open, revealing Felix Baker and Brady Rogers stepping out."Professor Wilson, what a coincidence. The elevator was empty the whole time—you two sure have great timing," Felix Baker remarked casually. But inwardly, he found it odd. They had taken quite a while to come downstairs. He chose not to press the issue, though.Brady Rogers, however, had a knowing glint in his eyes. His

Mason Alvarez teased from the backseat."What are you talking about? I saw both of you, okay?" Alice blinked innocently, her expression utterly sincere."Joseph, let’s stop and buy some beer and snacks on the way back!" she suggested eagerly. "Mason-senpai said she’s covering everything today, so we can go all out! I’m thinking Australian lobster, hairy crab, A5 Wagyu beef… Oh! There’s so much! I need to write it all down so we don’t forget anything!""Wait, wait, you little troublemaker! When did I ever say you could go all out? I only said I’d treat you today!" Mason Alvarez quickly corrected her."Isn’t that the same thing?" Alice responded with an innocent look."Since you’re paying, I don’t have to hold back!"Joseph chuckled. "Well then, don’t worry. I’ll make sure both lunch and dinner a

Alvarez was not only the chauffeur of the Cooper family estate but also its steward. Having served the Cooper family for decades, he managed nearly all household affairs.Because of this, he commanded immense respect—not just among the servants, but even among the younger members of the Cooper family. The moment he gave the order, the estate guards showed no mercy. For one, they had the matriarch’s backing; whatever happened, the responsibility would ultimately fall on her.For another, these so-called young masters and mistresses, as well as the second and third masters, had never treated them with any dignity.A rare opportunity for revenge had presented itself, and they seized it without hesitation. Before long, agonized screams and wails filled the air. The wooden staffs landed mercilessly on the backs of the so-called elites, some of whom were already bleeding profusely. The once-arrogant crowd quickly scattered in terror. She scrambled to her feet, hands covering the now-gaping tear in her yoga pants, and bolted toward Alice’s room in a panic.Outside, Alice was leisurely sipping her drink when Mason came sprinting past, yelping in distress. She blinked."Joseph, what just happened?" she asked as Joseph emerged from the gym.Joseph cleared his throat, looking away awkwardly."Her pants… uh… tore," he muttered, his face flushing slightly."Pfft—!"Alice nearly choked on her water, spraying it in surprise."Seriously? But my yoga pants are high-quality! They shouldn’t tear that easily!" she exclaimed in disbelief.Joseph shrugged. "I have no idea. You should go check on her yourself."Without hesitation, Alice dashed into her room.Inside, she found Mason Alvarez sitting on her bed, her lower half wrapped tightly in a blanket."Mason-senpai, what happened?" So, sweetheart, what do you think of the guy? First impressions?" Her mother’s voice was warm and eager."He’s alright." Mason replied nonchalantly."What does 'alright' even mean? Is it a yes or a no?" Her mother clearly wasn’t satisfied."I mean he’s pretty good! I think he’s decent too. You’re overthinking it—didn’t we hold hands? That already shows there’s mutual interest, doesn’t it?"Mason explained again, trying to sound patient."Right, right—we’re just being silly old folks, haha..." Her mother laughed."Sweetheart, when are you bringing him home? Your dad and I really want to meet him. He’s a handsome young man—takes after me! Back in the day, I was the most dashing lad in town!"Her father took the opportunity to boast."Oh, please. My daughter takes after me—youthful and beautiful, soft skin, delicate features. I ha

Just then, Mason Alvarez pulled out her phone and snapped a quick photo of their intertwined hands."There we go. I’ll send this to my parents—they’ll finally believe me." She looked quite pleased with herself."What if they ask you to bring your boyfriend home?" Joseph asked, casually releasing her hand as he got into the car."We’re still just getting to know each other. Holding hands doesn’t mean we’re ready for a family dinner. That’s still years away—three to five at least, don’t you think?""Either way, I’m done chatting with all those weirdos my parents keep picking."Mason mumbled from the passenger seat, her voice full of exasperation."Fair enough," Joseph said as he started the car and pulled out onto the road.As they drove, Joseph couldn’t help but notice how different Mason Alvarez seemed. The change had started the moment she took his hand. Before, she’d always come across as bold and difficult. But when she held his hand, something shifted—she became gentle, almost

"Uh... it's not bad," Joseph replied, a little stiffly. After all, honesty counts, right? How could anyone possibly say such soft, smooth hands didn’t feel nice to hold?"Do you want to keep holding them?" Mason Alvarez bit her lip and glanced sideways at him."That might not be appropriate..." Joseph looked uncomfortable, as if he were the one taking advantage."I don’t mind. So what’s inappropriate?" Mason rolled her eyes at him. Was this Wilson teacher really that clueless? Most men would kill for the chance to get close to her, and here he was, looking like he was doing her a disservice. The world was full of guys trying to take advantage of her, and yet this one — the one she offered it to — looked like he’d rather run."Alice is my girlfriend now. It just feels... wrong," Joseph said plainly, his conscience clearly weighing on him."Hey, hey, what are you talking about? She approved this, okay? I wouldn’t do anything sneaky behind her back.""You make it sound like I’m the

  • Chapter 348

After leaving the night market, Joseph and Mason Alvarez strolled down a quiet street. It was still a bit of a walk back to where they had parked. They had wandered quite far without realizing it."Mr. Wilson, are you out of your mind? That guy was throwing questions at you left and right—didn't that strike you as suspicious? How could you just share your personal information with a total stranger?""Especially things like your phone number, ID number, and other personal details—you should never reveal those to anyone.""These days, society’s a mess. Who knows what someone might do with that kind of information?"Mason walked steadily along the road, speaking in a casual tone."I know," Joseph replied with a nod."Then why did you do it?"Mason shot him a disbelieving look."Because I didn’t think he was a bad person. He had this air about him—stern, principled. He said he was a soldier, fresh off the battlefield."Joseph smiled faintly as he spoke."You can sense someone’s aura? He

“Nothing really,” Clarence Bennett said, scratching his head with a sheepish smile. “Just saw a familiar face and wanted to say hi.”“But you seemed like you were in a hurry, as if something important was going on,” Joseph replied with a faint smile.“Did I?” Clarence chuckled awkwardly. “You two were walking so fast, I could barely keep up.”Joseph raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.“To be honest, Mr. Wilson, you remind me of someone I used to know.”“You remember last time, I asked if you had any military experience?”“I remember,” Joseph said calmly. “And I already answered that question.”“Maybe I was just hoping too much,” Clarence admitted. “You’re just so much like him. But how could someone forget whether they served or not?”“I’ve forgotten a lot of things. Much of my past is just... blank.”Joseph’s tone was light, but distant.“You know, you’re really nosy,” Mason Alvarez suddenly cut in, her voice sharp. “Mr. Wilson clearly isn’t that close to you, yet you keep asking

Joseph’s dart shot through the air like a streak of silver light.Thud! With a sharp snap, it embedded itself deep into the spinning wheel. The moment it struck, the wheel froze in place. The dart had landed precisely in the red zone. The crowd around the stall gasped, stunned into silence.“Boss, does that mean I get to take the bunny home now?” Joseph asked with a grin.“This... this can’t be real…” the vendor stammered, momentarily speechless.“Was that really a bullseye? Am I seeing things?”“No, you’re not. He nailed it—one shot, dead center.”“My God… are there really men in this world who are that accurate?”The onlookers were in complete disbelief. To say he’d do it in one throw—and then actually do it? It was surreal.“Mr. Wilson, did you really hit it with just one dart?” Mason Alvarez rubbed her eyes, still unable to believe it.“What do you think?” Joseph replied, clearly amused by her expression.“If I’m not hallucinating, then yes… one dart. You nailed it.” Mason shook h

Before long, the table was covered with dishes. In truth, Mason Alvarez had already eaten quite a bit earlier, snacking on all sorts of things. Now, she only picked at a few bites before deciding she’d had enough. After about half an hour, she asked the waiter to pack up the remaining food for Joseph to take home.“Mr. Wilson, your car’s parked near the plaza, right? How about we walk back through the pedestrian street?”Mason suggested casually.“What else would we do, call a cab for five minutes of walking?” Joseph shot her a look.“Then let’s take it slow. It’s still early, and this area isn’t far from where your little sweetheart and I both live.”Mason skipped ahead with a cheerful grin.It was peak night market hours and the pedestrian street was bustling with people. Stalls lined both sides, offering every kind of street food imaginable.Mason wandered from one to the next, her eyes lighting up at every new snack.“Mr. Wilson, look! There’s a dart game over there. But honestly, Joseph knows so many things, it wouldn’t surprise me if he could do anything.”“And he’s always been so low-key. Unless absolutely necessary, he never shows off his talents.”“Ugh, this Butterfly Lovers performance was so beautiful... and he’s never played a single note for me!” Alice grumbled, clearly annoyed.“The concert’s almost over. You’ll be getting your man back soon,” Mason quickly replied.“You better be right.
