1. Flirting with a stranger

"Just who the hell do you think you are?" Mrs Smith snapped, whilst staring at the young man before her. The fury in her expression could not be described with words, and if stares could kill, then Oscar would have dropped dead less than a second ago.

"Ma'am, please understand me, I think we should carry out a proper investigation before concluding that I_

" You dare speak to me? " Mrs Smith interjected.

" You had one job, Mr Oscar, and if there was anyone I trusted with all my heart, then it was you. As the financial secretary, I do not expect nearly three million dollars to leave the company account, without you knowing about it, then what is your job?"

Oscar kept his gaze fixed on the desk, he couldn't dare look at Mrs Smith who was already convinced that he stole the company's money.

"I'm sorry ma'am," he said,

"But I believe that there is more to the story than the detective has told us." He added.

"I don't want to hear your explanations Mr, 0scar, I need a man that I can trust and not a twenty-six-year-old that robs me in broad daylight." Mrs Smith chipped in.

All evidence pointed to Oscar, so much so that even a child would easily be convinced that he was the thief. And having been fed with these false pieces of information, Mrs Smith was not going to take any chances.

"I need every single company paper in your possession returned to me within the next two hours. Round up whatever it is you have to do today and leave this premises. Do not, and I repeat myself, do not step foot into this establishment again, you are fired!"

Oscar could not believe his ears, how could a year's worth of trust crumble to dust within two days? How could his only source of income slip past his hand because of someone else's mistake?

The investigation only lasted two days, which was surprising. Oscar suspected that the detective was involved in the theft as well, especially since he was recommended to Mrs Smith by the same men whom he suspected to have stolen the money.

"Ma'am, please, just give me one week to carry out a proper investigation, I'm very sure that in no time, the real thief will be found and your money will be returned to you_

"Oscar," she cut him off.

"Get out of my office, don't force me to throw out. I'm very sure that the three million dollars you stole would be enough for you and your family to live on, just know that you'll return every bit of it." She added with a straight face.

"Can you just give me a second to explain ma'am?" Oscar uttered, his brows creasing in fury. He'd rather be thrown into a pit full of serpents than acknowledge these false accusations.

"Wow," Mrs Smith exclaimed in surprise,

"You are shouting at me now I see? Trust me, Oscar, by the time I'm done with you, you'll regret the very first day you met me, leave!" She ordered him and pointed to the door with a fierce gaze.

Without saying another word, Oscar headed for the door, he stopped for a second and stole a glance at the lady who had just fired him without a second thought.

"I must expose those who did this," he mumbled and walked out of the office, gently closing the door behind him.

"Tsk, tsk!"

Oscar had barely gone halfway through the hall when the voice of a young man mocked him from behind.

"Just the man I was looking for." Said, the voice, and Oscar turned around briskly to face the thirty years old figure behind him.

"And you are looking for me, why?" He asked, his gaze was intense and it was obvious to the man that he was not in a good mood for baseless discussions.

"I heard you are the thief, everyone is just as shocked as I am_

"Jacob, please," Oscar cut him off,

"I know what you and all your counterparts did, and I'm going to prove to Mrs Smith that I have no hand in this." He added as he stood before his biggest suspect, Jacob McCarthy, the same man willing to do anything to watch Oscar's downfall.

"And how do you suppose you'll do that now that you have been fired?" Oscar walked away before Jacob could finish his last words. He was convinced that Jacob had plotted everything to get him fired.

Besides, becoming the financial secretary was Jacob's dream before Oscar snatched it away with higher qualifications and better working experience. But if this case wasn't sorted out soon, then Oscar's name would forever be tainted.

Taking a deep breath and determined to get to the bottom of this, Oscar dashed into his office to retrieve the company's documents that Mrs Smith requested.

Three hours later

Oscar's car pulled up in front of a luxurious apartment, and the exterior design exhibited nothing but the lavishing wealth of its occupants.

As soon as he stepped out of the car, Oscar raised his brow at the red Benz that was parked next to his father-in-law's car.

"Did he buy a new car again?" He wondered because his father-in-law was fond of changing his cars like he changed his underwear.

He quickly parried those thoughts. They weren't as important as what had happened to him at the office. Getting fired and Mrs Smith making sure that his accounts were restricted until her money was returned, coupled with the threat to send him to jail if he failed to deliver in two months.

Oscar was devastated. It took a lot of self-control to not cry back home.

"Besides, what will my tears change?" He had asked himself.

As soon as he walked through the door, Oscar felt as though the clock stopped ticking, and the universe stopped spinning. His jaws dropped in astonishment as he stared from his mother-in-law to his wife, who was holding hands and flirting with a stranger.
